Re: How to get a real ID appointment at DMV

Catherine Schwartzstein

It took me about two months of trying to get an appointment. Keep trying just before 3:00 on Tuesday. The system is not easy to navigate.

Good luck!

It seems that the retail was developed by the Union Station Investco, but the building itself is owned by the Federal Government and I believe falls under the DOT

I’m sorry to correct, but Amtrak only owns the ticket counter to the train gates and tracks.
The main hall and all retail sections are owned by a private company.

Re: 7-Eleven closing?

Peter Cohn

I agree, I think 7-11 provides some things that aren't available elsewhere in the neighborhood. I actually use their ATM because it is part of my credit union's network so 7-11 is my bank in a sense. (Speaking of banks, I am really disappointed in all of the bank branches opening in empty spots, I don't think they add much to our shopping district.) The Cleveland Park 7-11 also wins the prize for some of the nicest folks working in retail. I remember long before this 7-11 opened, there was one for years in the spot occupied by GW Urgent Care. It was perhaps more convenient because they sold beer and wine 7 days a week from 8am to midnight. Hopefully the other vacant spaces will get occupants. I'm excited to have Femme Fatale open.

It’s hard to understand why a restaurant like Yanyu is a more “real” business than 7-Eleven, let alone why an empty storefront is more desirable. It’s not to my aesthetic taste either, but it serves significant numbers of people all day who couldn’t dine at a high-priced restaurant. [snip]

ISO: kids haircuts outdoors

Lauren Wright

Hi All,

After more than a year of home haircuts my kids (3 and 6) could use a professional haircut. If anyone has a recommendation for a person/shop that has an outdoor option, I would be grateful.

Sincerely,

Union Station is owned by Amtrak and United States Department of Transportation. The DOT owns the station building itself and the surrounding parking lots, while Amtrak owns the platforms and tracks through the Washington Terminal Company a nearly wholly owned subsidiary (99.9% controlling interest). I would follow up with the Feds, not the DC government. The Feds would be liable in the event of an unfortunate occurrence.
Amtrak is owned by the federal government which owns all of its preferred stock and outstanding shares.

I also completely endorse Manoukian. They do a great job—they come and pick it up and they bring it back and put it down correctly. A good family run business!

I recommend long-time rug dealers Manoukian Brothers Inc. They started in Adams Morgan, then moved to DC close to Silver Spring, now in northern Virginia. They picked up and cleaned all my rugs last fall. I have purchased rugs from them as well. Ask for Dona Manoukian, my friend, mborugs@...

Re: ISO Rug cleaner for pick up

Lindsley Williams

Judy's endorsement of Manoukian Brothers is justified and reflects sales and services that family business has earned over the decades it has existed, now operating our of a building in Arlington that serves as both a showroom, carpet repair shop, and at times even a place where some carpets might be cleaned instead of going elsewhere that Manoukian staff use or firms they use regularly for cleaning oriental and other carpets. At the helm of this business now you will find Paul Manoukian's wife Dona and their son Michael. Decades ago, when they were in their Adams Morgan store, the staff would have included Paul himself and one member of the family from a prior generation that every one called "Uncle Manouk". You can tell from this I have known this firm and its staff and used them for carpet services, not just carpet sales, for decades; I hold them in very high regard.

I would recommend them readily. I would also suggest that you ask Michael and representatives of other firms to stop by before you decide on who to engage to see what else they could handle if you wished, some of which might be furniture in the home. For me, this is a good time for in home cleaning of the seats of dining room chairs -- place where food sometimes drops before it reaches the mouth of the person sitting there. Such stains detract from overall appearance and quickly return to colors and texture you will remember from prior times and be glad to see again. This is a potential where getting a cost estimate ahead of time could be good for you as well and likely better than something arranged the day they come by to roll up and pick up a single carpet.

To the OP:

You may want to report this to the Office of Inspector General for both Amtrak and the US DOT.

Clarification on posting: ISO Person for house share $1200 - $2000 per person plus utilities

Helen Qubain

Hello,

I have had a couple of people reach out to me regarding my shared house ad yesterday. I'd like to clarify:
  • The rent listed for the space posted is $2000 for one person per month plus utilities
  • I have been asked if there is an option to pay a lower rent and the answer is "yes".  There are options to configure the house share differently where someone could pay $1200 - 1500. It really depends on who wants to rent and how much of the addition they want for private use.
So far only women have responded, so while we are open to renting to anyone, the preference will probably go to women unless there is a person or 2 people who want to rent 2BR / 2BA together.

So if you are interested, please contact me - hqubain@.... We have interested parties and I think we will be able to decide and have a lease signed this week. We have a showing of the addition Wednesday (tomorrow) from 7-7:30.  So optimally if you are interested, contact me today and if it makes sense come to see the place tomorrow.

Thank you to all who have reached out to me.

ISO Calibration of home BP monitor

fremenyc

Hello --

Where can I calibrate a home blood-pressure monitor, which I recently ordered online? Or maybe there's an at-home technique I can't currently find? The internist is not an option in this case.

Thanks,

Let’s hope the one in Cleveland Park is next to close. We need a real business there, e.g., a restaurant like Yanyu, not a dump like 7-Eleven.
