ISO: Local movers for move on 6/28 or 7/1 - suggestions?

lisajvollmer@...

Hi neighbors—

I’m in a bit of a panic as I’ve just sold my one-bedroom condo on Connecticut Ave but the buyers have requested a quick settlement. I’m having a tough time finding movers that can accommodate this short turnaround request given that it’s also high season (summer) and the end/beginning of the month.

If anyone has any leads of a small operation that might be able to take on this quick job, please let me know.

Thanks!

Re: ISO someone to sand and stain oak floors

Dorita Sewell

It's an uphill push to say anything unflattering about Universal Floors, but I don't think much of them.  The floors looked OK--they usually do, no matter who refinishes them. I like my floors sanded to the unstained oak and finished with a matte polyurethane so they look like oiled wood--not shiny--and so they are the color of the wood. I've done this for almost every move, so I've tried various floor people.  I'd say the only distinction among companies has been ethics.

Universal splashed polyurethane here and there on my new paint. It took an eon. They confirmed what had happened, but they never fixed it. They offered me a take-it-or-leave it can of paint.

On their new album BAYTI FI RASI , they translate the journey of the great grandmother from Yemen to Israel, during the Post-WWII “Operation Magic Carpet,” into 14 undeniable anthems sung in a Yemeni Arabic dialect and backed by indigenous instrumentation, electronic orchestration and hip-hop beats.

Re: What is your experience with RCN, please?

Beth Beuchner

I agree with the 2 prior comments. I have had excellent service via personal contact and telephone contact. I have been a customer since they were District Cablevision. It is my understanding that they moved all their help line personnel back to USA, which makes life much easier for individuals like me who only speak 2 languages, American English and Southern English.

Best,
Beth

Excellent. We have phone, internet and cable TV as a package. All are excellent. The interface with Tivo is outstanding. Doesn't get PAC-12 network but many other cables don't either. We hate connecting with one of the monopolists.

Re: ISO someone to sand and stain oak floors

Alec Dann

Nelson Rivas is good: 301-466-3063

One challenge with floors is to get the stain right. After the sanding is done, test different stains and when you’ve picked the one you like, have the tests sanded off but the whole floor is stained with your choice. Nelson will bring you a swatch book to pick from but until you see a stain on your wood, you won’t really know how it will look.

Also, the high gloss finishes wear longer but will make your floor look like a gym.  Consider semi-gloss or another less glossy option.

Repaving of Macomb St.

Nancy MacWood

DDOT plans to repair sidewalks and curbs as the first stage of a repaving project on Macomb St. The work could begin soon, but no parking signs will be posted on Macomb St. between 34th St. and Ross Place with the start date.  If you travel on Macomb St. once you see the no parking signs, you will know that work is scheduled to begin in 72 hours.  The street  will be open during the first phase of work, but there will  equipment on the street and regular travel lanes may be impeded.  If you don't have to use Macomb St. during this project, it would be much appreciated.

The second phase of work will involve milling the roadbed and repaving.  Again, there will be no parking on the street between 34th and Ross Place.  At the end of this phase when the road is actually repaved, the street will be closed.  This should not last for more than one day and the street should be  reopened at the end of the construction day.

I've asked DDOT to reassess the scope of work up to Connecticut Avenue.  In my view, many of the curbs are almost non-functional and sections of the sidewalk, which is very narrow in some places, need repairs.  The street trees limit what DDOT can do, but I hope DDOT will agree that there is a need for safety improvements.

Please respect the no parking areas on Macomb St. and avoid the street once work begins, if you can.

Hello neighbors -
Is your primary care doctor awesome and accepting both BCBS and new patients? My go-to doc has gone boutique, charging a hefty yearly membership fee to be his patient, so I am seeking recommendations for a new primary care doctor in NW DC. Your time and recommendations are appreciated!

Missing cat family - 3500 block of Woodley Rd - have you seen them?

sabrina

Some neighbors have been feeding a stray cat and 4-5 kittens she recently gave birth to, underneath a backyard shed in the 3500 block of Woodley Rd and were hoping to get them to a foster home this week. However they seem to have deserted their nest, no one has seen them in 36-48 hours and their food has gone uneaten. We're hoping that a nice neighbor has offered them better accommodations.

Could you please let me know if you have seen them?

Thank you,
Sabrina

Free love seat

Robert Keatley

Does anyone have an interest in a Victorian-style loveseat--available to anyone who will take it away. It's old--belonged to my wife's mother--but not old enough to be a valuable antique. It's been sitting in the garage under plastic sheeting for some time and appears to be basically sound. But it would need care, probably re-upholstering, to make it truly respectable.

Anyway, if someone wants it, let me know.

Re: ISO someone to sand and stain oak floors

We’ve had Universal do work on our floors. They have multiple crews and were generally pretty good, but some were better than others. Luis Criollo was referred to me by my realtor for floors, and I’d say his work was a notch above Universal’s. He installed new flooring and did a beautiful job repairing and refurbishing old flooring that was in such bad shape I thought we’d need to replace the entire first floor. He’s now a general contractor but for many years did only flooring. I thought his prices were quite reasonable, likely less than Universal. He’s also a man of integrity and a delight to work with. I know because his estimate for the flooring morphed into working with me getting the whole house ready for sale. We didn’t even get to the flooring until over a year later! Luis can be reached at (240) 601-4629. By all means tell him I recommended him.

Need to Plane Down Door

I have a pocket door that had paneling added so the large flat 32” wide x ~ 72” side needs to be planed down by 3/8” or 1/4” so it will slide easily. Can anyone recommend someone who can do this for me and where I can have it done?

Thank you!
