Unfortunately the closest Krispy Kreme store appears to be in Bloomington. Anybody want to make a field trip to pick up a couple dozen?

We have no absolute temperature limit. We’ve been out on some pretty brutally cold days in the past. The 0°F wind chill rule is somewhat arbitrary based mainly on what is safe for humans standing around outside for a few hours. At our “special” January 1 launch each year, we’ve been known to ignore even that limit. My own thinking tends to be mostly about whether I would have more fun that day outdoors on a cold and windy field, or enjoying a hot chocolate inside my own warm house.  :-)

Two practical things to keep in mind are that black powder motors tend to be more prone to failure when they’re extremely cold, and plastic parachutes become stiff and less likely to open reliably. Both of these issues can be overcome if you plan your flights with the weather in mind.

Greg,

What is the club's general policy for cold weather besides windchill below 0 degree?  Is there a general lower temperature limit?

Thanks,

We have a rocket launch scheduled tomorrow, Saturday, February 13, at Dodds Park in Champaign. This will be our first launch since October due to the recent loosening of state COVID-19 restrictions on large outdoor groups.

Setup will begin at 12:00 noon, probably in the north half of the soccer field parking lots. Our waiver allows flying motors through "H" class up to 4,000' MSL (about 3,250' from ground level). The waiver expires at sunset at 5:27 PM.

Unfortunately, the cold and windy weather continues. Here's the forecast from the NWS:

-----

Saturday - A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 14. Wind chill values between -8 and zero. North northwest wind 11 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

-----

I think it is very unlikely we'll be able to fly. Our policy is not to go out if wind chills are below 0°F. As always, I'll try to stay optimistic and won't post the final decision about the launch here until shortly after 11:00 AM tomorrow. You can also call me after that time at 217-840-1678 for an update.

We will try again on Saturday, February 27 at Dodds Park. The good news is that the forecast for that week is much warmer, although it's way too early to guess what might happen on any particular day.

We will be enforcing our physical distancing and masking requirements at tomorrow's launch.

#Launch CANCELED #Launch

Greg Smith

At 11:00 AM, it was 13°F in Champaign, with broken clouds at 1300 feet, a north wind at 15 mph, and a wind chill of -3°F. Some snow is expected this afternoon, but probably won't amount to much.

Due to the high winds, sub-zero wind chill, clouds and the threat of precipitation, today's launch is canceled.

We will try again in two weeks, on February 27. Hopefully it will be a little warmer by then.

Zoom meeting on Tuesday #Meeting #VirtualEvent

Jonathan Sivier

Our February club meeting will be held on Zoom again this coming Tuesday, February 2 at 7 p.m. We will be sending out the details on how to join in the meeting in another message in the next day or so.

Everyone is invited to join in the meeting. We don't have any particular topic for the meeting, but if you have something you would like to see discussed, or questions about any rocketry related topic, please let us know.

We don't know when we'll be able to hold in-person meetings again, so in the meantime we hope you will join us virtually.

Jonathan

As I recall, they used to alternate between any item, and a specific item. I think they are going to lower prices, kind of what they did with the Estes stuff.

I seem to recall a time when they had different coupons each week. Some percentage of them were the 40% off on any item, but the rest were coupons for some specific item or type of items. Perhaps they will start doing that again. I'll have to make an effort to get there sometime during the next month.

In the article, they said this would allow them to lower prices across the board on everything in the store. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that.

Re: spam from cia

Randy Milliken

My suggestion is to still get away from using Comcast as your email provider. They are one of the larger problems I have to deal with at work. They just kind of do whatever they like without worrying about the rest of the world.

Re: spam from cia

Jonathan Sivier

You can also complain to your ISP and/or Comcast that their service is causing problems and if you are very lucky they may be able to fix it or tell you how to work around it.

Jonathan

On 1/23/2021 12:53 PM, Jonathan Sivier wrote:
It appears that other people with Comcast addresses are having a similar problem (not on our list as far as I know, but on other Groups.io lists). It looks like this problem has just started, so it may be something got changed by Comcast in their email program that is now causing a problem. One suggestion someone made was to check the information at the Xfinity help page

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/spam-filters-and-email-blocking-new-experience <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/spam-filters-and-email-blocking-new-experience__;!!DZ3fjg!qvEWKF8tsHKSTNxg3BCZNWAmNKgCi8WR2nxSOLhpfd-g3zSDMT5iojiqmmr1NPvAFQ$>

About halfway down the page it mentions the "Email Safe List". I'm guessing this is a place you can list addresses and/or domains and tell Comcast that they are OK and that messages from them aren't spam.

Jonathan

Many ISP's (Internet Service Providers) have a way you can specify that a given address is OK and messages from that source aren't spam. This is sometimes called a "whitelist" and sometimes has other names. However, the idea is that you can tell your ISP not to mark any messages from that source as spam.

One thing to be sure is that you don't allow the messages that get marked as spam to be deleted from your mail until you have marked them as not being spam (or more likely unmarked them as spam). Many ISP's have a policy that if mail from a given address is marked as being spam they send a complaint to the source of the mail and the way Groups.io is handling those complaints is to remove the person complaining from the list. The thinking is that if you consider mail from a list to be spam, then you don't want to be on the list.
