We do have a written agreement with the Champaign Park District. Let me know if you would like a copy. You may not want to follow it directly, but it might give you some ideas.

Basically our agreement sets out the responsibilities of the Park District and the club as an affiliate. The Park District agrees to allow us to reserve and make use of the park for flying rockets. They also will publicize our activities and contact info in their brochures. It also specifies how much we will be charged for having the restrooms open a the park during GARLO. This amount is less than what they would normally charge a group holding an event at the park. I'm not sure if they are specifically giving us a break on the cost (they have a park district employee there all day) or if this is just a remnant from an earlier version of the agreement that hasn't gotten updated.

On our part we are required to have insurance for the site, which we get from the NAR. We are required to hold a workshop each year and do some sort of program for their summer camps. These are things we would be willing to do anyway, so that works out OK. We are to coordinate our use of the park with the person who oversees it and obey the rules and not damage anything.

There is a fair amount of legalese as you might expect, the current agreement is 5 pages long, but I think that gives you some idea of what the agreement consists of.

Do you guys have an agreement, verbal or in writing, with Parkland or the local park district or anything like that? I would love to be able to formalize a policy and be a community that welcomes our little hobby.
Maybe even invite you all to do a build-n-fly.

Re: Lockdown !!!!

We don't know what is going to happen as far as rocket launches go over the summer or in the fall. Whether or not we'll be able to hold launches will depend on a lot of factors which are totally unknown at this time.

When our region moves to Phase 3 or Phase 4 of the reopening plan we may be able to arrange for some launches. That may well happen over the next month or so. However, this summer's activity will depend on other factors beyond the mere change in the current Phase. A lot will be up to the Park District and whether they will allow organized groups to use their fields.

As William says farm fields won't be available until October, or later. What the situation will be like at that time we have no idea. Also, just because the circumstances might legally allow us to hold a launch, doesn't necessarily mean it is a good idea to do so. We will have to evaluate the situation at that time and make a decision.

virtual rocketry workshop for 4-H kids

Jonathan Sivier

A week ago today we were originally scheduled to hold a rocketry workshop for some 4-H kids in Bloomington. Obviously, it was cancelled, though we hope we will be able to hold it next year or at some other future time. Our plan had been to make it a hands-on workshop with the kids broken into small groups and team building some rockets under the guidance of an adult mentor. The intention was to expose them to good rocket building practices. We were also going to talk about several of the aspects important to building and finishing rockets that would be entered in the McLean County Fair 4-H competition.

It seems unlikely that there will be a competition for them to enter this summer. However, the 4-H organizers and trying to put together some virtual workshops for the kids over the summer. They are wondering if we would like to try to do something like that. They would like it to be a hands-on activity if that is possible. We have never tried anything like this before and I don't really know what might be possible. I thought I would put the question out to the whole group and see if anyone has any ideas on what we might do for a virtual model rocketry workshop.

Let us know if you have any ideas or suggestions.

Jonathan
