I used to repair the test equipment used to do maintenance on Minuteman II missiles in the 80's. Big rocket in a deep hole.

night launch next Saturday
#Launch
Jonathan Sivier
Our next scheduled launch at Dodds Park is on Saturday, September 12. This will be our annual night launch. We will meet at the usual time, around noon, to set up and fly during the afternoon. However, we will plan to stay a bit later than usual so that we can fly some rockets after dark. Obviously it is a good idea to have lights and flashers, etc. on the rockets so they can be seen in the air and then found after they land.
Hopefully this advance notice gives you a chance to put something together to fly on Saturday. Jonathan

another appeal for mask preferences
Jonathan Sivier
As mentioned in a message a couple of weeks ago we are planning on ordering some custom CIA masks. We will get them in a few different colors and the CIA logo will be printed on them in white. We will be selling them for $10. You can get an idea of what the masks we will be ordering look like, without the logo, at (https://www.sanmar.com/p/10782_HtRed). As you can see on the page these masks come in several colors.
In order to figure out how many to get, and what colors, we would like to hear from you. Let us know if you would purchase a CIA mask, how many you would like to get and what color(s) you like. Once we have some idea of the interest we'll order a batch in several of the most popular colors. You should be able to respond to me directly using the link at the bottom of this message. Jonathan

Tuesday's meeting
Jonathan Sivier
We still are unable to hold meetings at the Springer Center. So the meeting scheduled for tomorrow is cancelled. However, a few of us plan to meet for dinner in lieu of our regular meeting. If anyone wants to join us we'll be meeting at the Dos Reales on Prospect in Champaign at 7 p.m. We plan to sit outside under their tent. If it is too rainy and/or cold and windy tomorrow we will reschedule for the same time and place on Thursday.
Let us know if you plan to attend so we can ask for the right number of seats. Jonathan

Rocket Recovery-Drone

Anyone know of anyone that could recover a rocket in a tree near Dodds via drone? Tree company too expensive compared to rocket cost.
Thank you.

Outlook for Saturday
#Launch
Greg Smith
We have a rocket launch scheduled tomorrow, Saturday, August 22, at Dodds Park in Champaign.
Setup will begin at 12:00 noon, probably in the south half of the soccer field parking lots. Flying can continue until sunset at 7:39 PM. Our waiver allows flying motors through "H" class up to 4,000' MSL (about 3,250' from ground level). The forecast looks great: ----- Saturday - Sunny, with a high near 86. Calm wind becoming south southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. ----- I'm very confident we'll be able to fly. As always, I'll post the final decision about the launch here shortly after 11:00 AM tomorrow. You can call me after that time at 217-840-1678 for an update. Our next launch will be Saturday, September 12 at Dodds Park. That will also be our annual night launch, so be prepared to stay out late and bring your rockets equipped with lights, strobes, beepers, etc. (Flashlights and insect repellant also highly recommended!) We will be enforcing our physical distancing and masking requirements at tomorrow's launch. See Jonathan's message from Tuesday, 7/21 for the details. ----- Greg Smith N9LHI NAR 15881 * TRA 1974 Director of Operations, Central Illinois Aerospace greg@... 217-840-1678

GARLO 2020 and other fall events
Jonathan Sivier
Due to COVID-19 we were unable to hold GARLO 2020 at the time it was scheduled in late June. Due to the restrictions we have had to impose in order to fly safely we don't feel we can hold GARLO in its normal form this year. However, we do want to hold a special launch for GARLO this year despite everything. So we have decided to designate our launch at Dodds Park on September, 26 as being "Unofficial GARLO 2020". Details still need to be worked out, but basically it probably will be the same as our regular launches at the park. However, we want to encourage those who have put together rockets for GARLO, or can put something together over the next month, to fly them that day. Remember the theme this year was "2020 Vision". That can mean whatever you like it to. We probably won't have all the usual contests, but we may award some impromptu prizes for noteworthy flights, good looking rockets and rockets that fulfill the theme in some manner.
Our next launch, after tomorrow, will be on Saturday, September 12. That is planned to be our annual night launch. So we will meet at noon to set up and start flying around 1:00 as usual. However, we will stay at the park a bit later so we can fly some rockets after it gets dark. Typically people put flashers or other sorts of lights on their rockets so they can be seen and then found in the dark. We are then planning to hold our October and November launches at farm fields so that we can fly some larger high power rockets. Smaller rockets are still welcome of course. This will depend on the progress of the harvest, but hopefully we'll be able to get in a few high power launches this fall. Jonathan

Re: CIA masks

We are currently planning on printing the CIA logo in white on the masks. The plan is to have the logo over to one side, rather than right in front over the mouth.
