Hello Chibug,

Microsoft Teams is an interesting choice for a BSD group. Not arguing
(anything is better than a Zoom), just noticing the irony.
Another note - virtual meetup defeats the purpose of a *local* BSD group,
I think. Even in my case, where the physical location didn't work. Sorry.

The choice is not between a virtual meetup and a local one right now, it's between a virtual one and no meetup at all. Once the situation improves that allows us to safely meetup in person again, we will do that instead.

Hi ChiBUG,

We have found a new virtual meeting venue that better meets the needs of BSD
users. Not that using MS Teams is ironic, but because some of us had issues
with getting camera's to work with Teams in Chromium on BSD.

Thank you to JCS and other BSD users / groups for helping with testing and
suggestions.

The new venue works in Firefox and Chrome and smart devices with app stores.
And most importantly does not kick people out at 1 hour for free accounts.

So please disregard the link for the MS Teams meeting and head on over to

https://meet.jit.si

to test your webcam and microphone when you have time, by creating your own
room.

The meeting room name will be emailed to the mailing list and posted on
https://chibug.org 30 minutes prior to our start time (October 13th 18:00 CDT).

Outgoing destionation ports need for jitsi to work are:
udp/10000 and tcp/4443(failback if udp is blocked)

If you have trouble getting your camera or microphone working in BSD, please
check to make sure you do not have them disabled in BIOS and feel free to email
the list. I will try my best to help you get them working.

Thanks,
Jim

On OpenBSD you'll need to:

# chown `whoami` /dev/video0

to allow your logged-in user access to your webcam.

To record audio, you'll need to:

# sysctl kern.audio.record=1

My contrived example won't work as root, so:

$ sudo chown `whoami` /dev/video0

sudo4lyfe!

I may be delayed joining the meeting, or may not be there at all.
Personal business is working to thwart my attendance, fyi.

The quality of Jitsi is pretty low, especially audio latency.

We're trying the MS Teams version now since it seems to work much better, although only in Chrome. If you use the dedicated iOS app it lets you view everyone at once, but in the browser it only shows one camera at a time (whoever is talking).
