I was leading a walk today on the Hidden Spruce Trail at Collins Lake in Yuba County.

While scoping some Common Mergansers, I spotted a female Red-breasted Merganser! That was quite surprising, especially for this time of year. 

If someone is interested in seeing this bird, it was hanging out north of the peninsula here (39.3414463, -121.3253823), which is accessible from the hidden spruce trailhead which starts right after the gate to collins lake. Its about a 0.5 mile hike to get to the peninsula.

The bird was pretty close to shore. This spot can only be seen from the peninsula, but of course the bird could move around the lake so if it isn't there its good to check the boat launch and dam areas too. 

Lots of other migrants as well, including a rather late Rufous Hummingbird, Hammond's Flycatcher, and more.
