At 9:15am, after staking out since 8, this morning, I finally spotted the Yellow-billed Loon
at a considerable distance to the west on the S. Mokelumne River. I scoped from levee
beneath the Hwy. 12 bridge near Tower Park Marina. Despite its distance, morning conditions
were nearly ideal with the sun at my back, no wind, and almost zero shimmer. I initially
found the bird with binoculars, and then switched to my scope to make the positive I.D.
