This is a good solution, Peter, to let the two threads run without crossing our wires.
It should be possible, Niranjan, to use lactic acid in a Simple Cy formulation - with some change in the stoichiometry. I guess with a bidentate ligand like lactate it will be a tris-complex, whereas the citrate forms a bis-complex.
If you are keen on violet blue, try lead toning New Cy - and Simple Cy. See Cyanomicon §8.6.1, pp. 265-7 for recipes and Figs. 8.1 & 8.2 for results.
