Trying To Convert File To MP3

Hello list: Am attempting to convert an MP4 file to MP3; here's what is
happening: I am using the program Switch to convert this MP4 file to an MP3 file, so I then can running it through MP3 Direct Cut to trim some parts off! However, while I have managed to convert to MP3, then I find I have no file.at least, the file isn't playing in Winamp; nor will it play in MP3 Direct Cut! What is it I am missing? An doing this for a friend who needs this, so am hoping I can get a solution to this one! Thanks, Tom Kaufman |

You are working with 2 lossy formats. You should convert to wav or another lossless format make your cuts etc then convert to mp3. Because you might not know it but this is what switch would have been doing in the background. I am guessing that something wasn’t carried across to the mp3 file. This will cut down on the number of downward conversions. Which is important because each conversion further detail is lost, hence their name lossy formats. My understanding is tha tyou can't do any trimming or editing of an mp3 file. So you need to convert it to a .wav file then do your trimming then convert it to an mp3 file.

I need to make an MP3 file so I can then run it through MP3 Direct cut and take the unwanted stuff out! Can this not be done? I know that MP3 files definitely can be cut as I've done it often enough! Do you know how this mp3 cut works? John is right. Imagine a suitcase packed to the brim and you want to change the suitcase size. You have to unpack it and transfer its contents into the new case. Convert to a lossless format then you will be able to edit. If you insist upon using this mp3 cutting program you will be degrading the quality. It may not be visible to you. But you cannot edit a mp3 file without unpacking it. The program may just do it in memory but it does it. Obviously, there is something about the mp4 file that is preventing someone from braking copyright or something. Get a lossless format copy of the file. Hi Georgina: If I convert to Lossless, then I then convert to MP3? The only way I can cut this particular file that I know of is with MP3 direct cut ()MP3 Direct Cut only works with MP3 files) here's what I'm dealing with: it's a zoom meeting that my friend wants the first part (things that don't need to be there) so she's wanting the access stuff cut out! Apparently, if you record with Zoom, Zoom creates either M4a or MP4 files. I apparently mistakenly thought that I could just convert the file to MP3, using Switch; then run it through MP3 Direct Cut and trim off the part of the recording that is not needed! The only other option that I may have is to just record the part of the meeting she would want with Total Recorder; something that would take a longer time, whereas if I can just chop off the part of the recording that is not needed, seems like that'd be much simpler! But if I am to convert to Lossless, then this won't work with MP3 Direct Cut! Now since I do have Total Recorder (standard version) I suppose there's a possibility I could do that! But would need some instructions in how to do this as I normally don't use Total Recorder in that way! But I do appreciate your efforts to try and help as I'd love to be able to take care of this for her!

I have used Audio Converter Plus for M4a files. It will alsw convert M4B files if you rename them to M4A.

To Tony and Georgina: I forgot to mention that Zoom does create more than one file; one of the files is named Audio_Only; if I'm not mistaken, this particular file is the M4A and will play in Winamp! But if again, if I convert to MP3, then Winamp absolutely will not play it in its converted form!

I was only trying to bring your attention to what it is you are doing and attempting to do. I don’t know these utilities that are obviously been created to simplify the process. You appear to be looking for a quick no fuss utility. I cannot guess why your workflow didn’t work on this occasion. The only way you would establish why the file became corrupted. Or maybe it didn’t maybe there is something that has been done to the file that Winamp doesn’t like. Have you tried another player? Have you looked at the file-size to see how it differs from the original. There are so many things with what you are doing to the files that could cause Winamp to refuse to play it. What do Winamp error messages say. Have you considered getting a copy of something like audacity and learning that? It will be a lot easier with such a program than taking the easy way of using these little utilities that mangle your files. But if they work for you sometimes and you are happy with that then fine. But you will have to investigate why it didn’t work this time. I don’t think anyone here could guess what has happened. Unless they understand how these utilities work and have been using these utilities for some time to know their little quirks. Have you wrote to the program suppliers for support? I have not had that problem but it might have to do with the MP3 settings. The encoder used in the conversion may not be supported by WinAmp. The programs I mentioned as well as others are free. You might want to try a different program to see if that helps.

As for Error messages from Winamp, none; only thing is, Winamp isn't playing the converted version of the file. Admittedly, I am not as well-versed about these things as many who are on this list. However, to me, it seemed like converting the file in qu4estion to MP3; then using MP3 Direct Cut (a program that I have had good luck with for a long time now) seemed to be the way to go. But that's why I put this query here in hopes someone could point me in the right direction! I will check the bit rate of the convert file; for now, I have seen that the original file (non-converted) is 53KPBS. So next, I will look at the converted file and see what that says! Again...I'm not being critical of your assessments and apologize if I came off that way! Am sure that you (along with others on this list) have a much better understanding of these things than I do!

It will be a lot easier with such a program than taking the easy way of using these little utilities that mangle your files. But if they work for you sometimes and you are happy with that then fine. But you will have to investigate why it didn’t work this time. I don’t think anyone here could guess what has happened. Unless they understand how these utilities work and have been using these utilities for some time to know their little quirks. Have you wrote to the program suppliers for support? Barry: I did try converting the original M4A (which does play in Winamp) to WAV just now; no soap! It won't play! But tell me about this Winamp Disk Writer output and how I either "get to it" or install it or whatever I need to do? As I said in an earlier reply, I don't claim to know a whole lot about this kind of stuff; am trying to do a favor for a friend and am having no luck! If it's as simple as using this Winamp Disk Writer to convert it to WAV; then converting that Wav file to an MP3, then I should be able to do what I want to do, which is to take the part of the file that my friend doesn't need away. First, I need to know more about this Winamp Disk Writer Output plugin!

Or maybe it didn’t maybe there is something that has been done to the file that Winamp doesn’t like. Have you tried another player? Have you looked at the file-size to see how it differs from the original. There are so many things with what you are doing to the files that could cause Winamp to refuse to play it. What do Winamp error messages say. Have you considered getting a copy of something like audacity and learning that? To get to the Winamp disk writer plugin: 1. Launch Winamp and open the file you wish to convert. 2. Press v to stop it playing. 3. Press ctrl+p for Winamp preferences. 4. Up or down arrow to plugins. If it is closed, press right arrow to open it. 5. Down arrow to output. 6. Press tab twice. You will probably be on Nullsoft DirectSound Output. 7. Down arrow to Nullsoft Disk Writer and press enter. 8. Press x and the file will be converted to wav rather than playing. By default, the converted file will be in your music folder under users and your name with a number such as 01 at the start. This can be changed in the plugin configuration. 9. Follow the steps above again to set the output plugin back to Nullsoft DirectSound Output. Otherwise, files will continue to be copied rather than played.
