sound system
Dean Masters
I am in a barbershop quartet and we need some kind of sound system that a blind person can use. We just need one microphone that will pick up all four voices. We don't have a lot of money since we haven't had any paid gigs yet. Are there any suggestions for maybe one speaker with one mike? I have seen a lot of karaoke type machines on Amazon but don't think their mikes would pick up more than one voice too well.
Thanks for any help,
Dean

Well we'd need to know how much you can spend. Because the only way to do this with 1 mic would be an omni which no these things won't come with an omni. Then there's the figure 8 mic. But again you have to get a multi paturn phantom powered condencer. No karaoke machine is gonna come with this. Nor do they have XLRs for phantom it's usually XLR to quarter intch jac. You've seen the quarter intch if you've plugged in an electric guitar.

Hi Dean,
I know this is not the cheapest solution out there, but on the other hand
you'll be bullet proof in almost all situations.
As the speaker system I'd suggest this new cool thing from electrovoice.
I'm sure this one will do great for your performance.
For a microphone you could use a simple Shure sm58 or another omni
directional mic.
To having 4 people share just one mic is close to impossible regardless of
how you try to do it.
Then 4 cheap mics would be a much better solution.
The most critical thing for yourself and your audience is the speaker
system.

The Shure sm58 is super cardioid directional not omni.
If you want to start out cheap get yourself a EV RE635A omni on ebay. One
mic will do the job well you do not need 4 of them. With 4 mics you also
would need to purchase a mixer. Find a powered speaker of decent quality
that has a mic level xlr input. A condenser multi pattern mic would be
nice but you can upgrade to it when you can afford it.

Oh, and if you buy the amp locally you can make sure that your mic works the
way you want it to before you buy.
