As best as I can, this is the contents of the dialog: Winamp Error Reporter
Dialog: Error unable to send crash report The choices I am given are Open report folder, then close button (hope I've got this correct! Tom Kaufman |

Yeah, not surprised the report doesn't work. But when you hit the close

button, the dialogue should go away. You're using the same version of Winamp that I am, I believe. Have you tried the 5.9 version? You might also try reinstalling 5.666. It sounds like winamp might be conflicting with some other programme. Other stuff you could try is removing stuff from memory to see if the conflict no longer happens. Since it's a music player we're talking about, I would consider other software that might use audio first. But before any of that, try re-installing. Since 5.666 is being weird for you at the moment, you may as well go for that new version. -----Original Message-----

whenever I get those winamp reporter error reports, it brings up my default mailer and wants to send a message. T-bird, which I use will send them after I make sure that all the misspellings and it goes on it's merry way, whether or not it causes merriment on their end or whomever's end it is, I wish they'd sit on it rather than bug us with it.

Even the "newest" winamp generates the errors, and there should be a way to turn them off within winamp settings. Curtis Delzer H.S. K6VFO Rialto, CA curtis@... On 12/27/2022 11:11 AM, Tom Kaufman wrote:

Well it seems like whenever I bring up Winamp, I get the notice that an update is available; whether I accept or decline, I then get the error message; I also am taken to the Winamp website and...well you folks have seen pretty much what I get; all I want is to be able to bring up Winamp, do what I want to do whether playing a file...whatever; I don't want whoever they are to keep bugging me! If I want to update to whatever this latest version of Winamp is, I will! But you've just verified my concern: even if I update, I'm still going to be bothered by this problem!

Oh, I don't know. I'm using v5.666 myself on this computer and I must say I've never seen a message about updates. I must have turned something off at some point. Maybe time to look around in settings, check out the categories, maybe compare your settings to someone else who isnt' having the problem, and see what doesn't match up.

In general preferences, tab to check for updates and uncheck it. I have it unchecked and never get that reminder.

Actually, maybe II wouldn't mind getting the update reminder; what I _do_ mind is that doggone error message; then it says something as to something has crashed (is it Crash reporter? Right now, I just don't know!

Yeah, that's not normal; you seem to be having a conflict of some kind on your system. What I would do is try disabling stuff like programmes that run at startup and stay in background and see if the problem goes away. A fresh install fo winamp could also help. Maybe the problem could be caused by a broken winamp plugin as well. Disable unneeded plugins and see if the problem goes away. You will probably want all the output plugins as they are, but definitely some of the others are probably unnecessary to you.

I understand part of what you're saying, but not why you need to use the old computer to get winamp. If you're missing the executable install, it's easy to find on the internet. Just download and install. As for the update thing, go to general preferences as someone mentioend a bit ago in the thread, and disable the check for updates box. That should get rid of that thing at least. As for the error, I suspect it's caused by some kind of conflict on your system; you might just have to start disabling things until you find the problem. Disable unneeded winamp plugins. Try disabling as many startup items as you can so that when your computer boots up it's as "clean" as possible. If the error goes away, you know it's one of those items, and you can start gradually re-enabling them until the error comes back -- then you'll know exactly what it is that's causign the ssue. But reinstall first. -----Original Message-----

I have no idea now who sent the message, and I deletedt he message. However, if you just go into Winamp preferences, you will find exactly what was pointed out int hat message, which is what I meant by referrign to the earlier message. Uncheck the box, and also the one about reporting anonymous usage statistics. Then go to plugins and check the box that says run winamp in safe mode. This will disable all but the necessary plugins I think, and then you'll see if you get the error message or not. You might want to uncheck the safe mode box again after you're done testing. -----Original Message-----

Okay...I've opened preferences, but am finding everything but what I want to find, which is General Preferences! The problem I have with Winamp's Preferences are those doggone treeviews (I just get lost) so again...exactly what are the steps to getting to General Preferences in Winamp?

If you haven't been in preferences recently, general will be the one that's already selected. it's at or near the top fo the tree view. It will say "general" or something like that. Then tab on. -----Original Message-----

General Preferences includes everything prior to skins such as File Types, Playlist, Titles, Playback, etc. and is probably already open.
