re taking the blank bit out of my audio file

stewartross

hi all,
i have an audio file,
the first 4 mins of it is blank,
i want to take this out, using some kind of software thats jaws friendly,
without loosing any quality,
if someone can help me, and tell me how to do it that would be most grateful.
regards
stewart

Good morning Steward:
Yes, there's a simple way to do just that. Are you familiar with the audio
editor Audacity? I often refer to it as a word document in audio format,
because of the way you edit files with it. Just like Word, you have to
select text prior to deleting or changing it in any way. Audacity is free
and easy to use, and is very friendly with Jaws. You say the first 4 minutes
of your file is blank? No problem. With audacity, all you have to do, is
find the spot in the file where the audio starts, press the left bracket to
put a placemarker there, press shift J to select everything from the
placemarker back to the left, then press control K to delete the silence.

I would use goldwave, its very Jaws friendly and once you know the
keyboard shortcuts, you will be able to do much more if you like.

Oh Hi! Yeah now that I think of it, I've seen you over there too. I often
use Audacity for my production work with Sonic Radio. You can get a copy of
the software from ninite.com. Here's the link:
http://www.ninite.com
Just use the F key to scroll down by control, and eventually you'll get to
the Audacity program. You see, on Ninite, they've got a bunch of checkboxes
for the different files and all you have to do is check the box for the
software file you want, then scroll down to the bottom where you'll find the
Get your ninite button. I've used these guys to obtain software lots of
times and they're very user-friendly with jaws. Another nice thing about
them is that you can easily download stuff whithout having to worry about
those annoying toolbars and other junk that tries to sneak its way into our
computers.

Another nice thing about
them is that you can easily download stuff whithout having to worry about
those annoying toolbars and other junk that tries to sneak its way into our
computers.

Goldwave is from goldwave.com. Its about the same as audacity, find
the place in the file where the blank starts and hit the [ key -- when
you open the file the [ key is at the beginning of the file. Find the
end of the blank area and hit the ] key and then if you are sure, hit
the delete (not backspace) key and then save the file -- this program
works with .wav files, otherwise it will convert mp3 to wav and back.

I would use goldwave, its very Jaws friendly and once you know the
keyboard shortcuts, you will be able to do much more if you like.

John's right. GoldWave is good too, although I believe you have to purchase
that one as aposed to Audacity which is free. GoldWave from what I can tell
from listening to other tutorials that people have made with it, it seems
user friendly with jaws too. Here's the link for that one too:
