There are several ways to reduce noise. You can start with the NT1A, you can switch from the H6 to the F8N which has a lot more noise free gain or you can stick with a mic of your choice and the H6 and buy a cloud lifter.

Firstly, I would record in wav. Then use reaper to apply a
noise gate. This removes hiss and other quiet unwanted noises.
I would not use a capsule on the recorder unless it was the
only mic available for that application. Using such a mic I would
secure the recorder and start the recording early so that I could
discard the first second as it will contain handling noise.
I would not wear noisy clothing or jewellery and try to get
away from the active recording space. It is surprising how clothing,
shoes and bangles rustle and jangle when you are trying to be quiet.
Then it is about choosing the mic for the sound stage I am
trying to capture. Remembering that the wider stage means that I have
to be that much quieter. It could pick me up breathing and moving my
feet. Then there are practical considerations such as power for
the Zoom and protection from wind and rain.
Of the top of my head these are the considerations I would

Frank what have you found? Do you have an NT1-A? Is the H6 noisy with it? As I explained to Gena Neal does the NT1-A tests in his computer room so you have his batteries eating into the floor noise. Is it too noisy? To me even with that unfair setting it seems the H6 is not much noisier than the Olympus LS-100. Which wasn't all that much noisier than Neal's 4 thousand $ Sound Devices 744-T recorder. Which again in this unfair computer room setting seems to be pretty much mixing desk quiet. Which is 1 of the things I find epic about the F recorders. Also their quality is pretty pro. Again from what I have herrd. I've yet not heard an Rode NT1-A even into an F4.

All electronic devices make a noise but most of them are out of our
hearing range. An amplifier does make a noise especially when it is cranked up to it's maximum. The Zoom 6 pre-amps are known for being noisy. So can you quote Neil saying that the Zoom 6 preamps are not noisy?
Andy you can hear the pre-amp hiss on your bird recording. There are 2
ways you could eliminate or at least reduce that hiss if you wanted. That I know of.

Firstly, I would record in wav. Then use reaper to apply a
noise gate.
This removes hiss and other quiet unwanted noises.
I would not use a capsule on the recorder unless it was the
only mic
available for that application. Using such a mic I would
secure the
recorder and start the recording early so that I could
discard the first
second as it will contain handling noise.
I would not wear noisy clothing or jewellery and try to get
away from the
active recording space. It is surprising how clothing,
shoes and bangles
rustle and jangle when you are trying to be quiet.
Then it is about choosing the mic for the sound stage I am
trying to
capture. Remembering that the wider stage means that I have
to be that
much quieter. It could pick me up breathing and moving my
feet.
Then there are practical considerations such as power for
the Zoom and
protection from wind and rain.
Of the top of my head these are the considerations I would

Hello John, I take him seriously. He is a professional voice actor. Furthermore what bothers me about this thread is that it is rather subjective. We al may be born with the same hearing but as we age and experience different noise levels during our lives, such judgements can only be based on subjective opinion. We subconsciously block out background noises. We tolerate some tones more readily than others. A noise floor isn’t bad, it is about understanding it and using it or masking it. Look at Tamla Motown, their equipment was shockingly bad. However, the skills of the people knew how to use it and made many hit records. I have a fethead and it really does make a difference when using dynamic mics. In that the pre-amps don’t have to be cranked up. Being inline makes it easy to install too.

A small box with XLR in and out connectors and no other switches or connectors. It's a mic preamp designed to lift the signal of low output mics out of the noise floor. Without looking it up I am not sure how much gain you get but 24 dB seems close. Given this additional gain you can operate your recorder preamps in a more comfortable mid range setting.

Good point. The lifter uses phantom power but it does not get through to the mic. So its mostly for ribbons and dynamics.

I have the H6, do not yet have an NT1A but by all accounts it is one of the quietest mics on the market.
I do not recall the exact specs but the head room on the H6 preamps is much less than that on the F8N and the sound devices. That is the primary reason why I would get an F8. It has great preamps. I use my cloud lifter primary with my ribbon mic and sennheizer 441s which are notorious for their low output levels. Electrovoice RE20 also doesn't give you much of a signal. But the lifter is basically a poor man's way to turn the H6 into a F8.
I am Eager to learn more about the F6.

On 5/15/2020 2:38 PM, frank cuta wrote: There are several ways to reduce noise. Firstly, I would record in wav. Then use reaper to apply a
noise gate.
This removes hiss and other quiet unwanted noises.
I would not use a capsule on the recorder unless it was the
only mic
available for that application. Using such a mic I would
secure the

discard the first
second as it will contain handling noise.
I would not wear noisy clothing or jewellery and try to get
away from the
active recording space. It is surprising how clothing,
shoes and bangles
rustle and jangle when you are trying to be quiet.
Then it is about choosing the mic for the sound stage I am
trying to
capture. Remembering that the wider stage means that I have
to be that
much quieter. It could pick me up breathing and moving my
feet.
Then there are practical considerations such as power for
the Zoom and
protection from wind and rain.
Of the top of my head these are the considerations I would
employ before
a recording. So what about your experiences and approach?

If using something like h6 I cannot really imagine that you
would need
to apply noise filters. Unless you very picky.

Hello Tim,
Interesting, if using a non destructive DAW like reaper, if
it
is
incorrectly applied simply undo it. I am not familiar with
using expanders.
But the noise comes from whatever equipment. Very few mics
have a
undetectable noise floor and even the best pre-amps have
some
noise. So a
light touch of post processing is likely to be required.
But
as you rightly
point out it is down to the environment and what purpose
the
recording is to
serve.
Thanks,

I agree about most of theadvice here. However i would be
careful about
using a noise gate. If set incorrectly, a noise gate can
make
things sound
worse than better. A downward expander would be better,
but
if you are
using a quality mic and have recording levels set
properly,
even a
downward expander probably isn't necessary, depending on
what
you are
recording.

Hello All,
Rather than making the current discussion on Zoom
Microphones. very long
I thought I would ask the community of their experiences
and how they
undertake a recording? As I was not sure if Andy wanted
tips
on recording
techniques I thought such a thread would help him and
those
of us who
have a Zoom.
Firstly, I would record in wav. Then use reaper to apply
a
noise gate.
This removes hiss and other quiet unwanted noises.
I would not use a capsule on the recorder unless it was
the
only mic
available for that application. Using such a mic I would
secure the
recorder and start the recording early so that I could
discard the first
second as it will contain handling noise.
I would not wear noisy clothing or jewellery and try to
get
away from the
active recording space. It is surprising how clothing,
shoes and bangles
rustle and jangle when you are trying to be quiet.
Then it is about choosing the mic for the sound stage I
am
trying to
capture. Remembering that the wider stage means that I
have
to be that
much quieter. It could pick me up breathing and moving my
feet.
Then there are practical considerations such as power for
the Zoom and
protection from wind and rain.
Of the top of my head these are the considerations I
would
employ before
a recording. So what about your experiences and approach?
