Microphones for Zoom

Andy

Hi all.

I've got both the Zoom H6 and the F8n, but the only microphones I have are the 2 clip on ones that I origionally got with the H6.

I'm wanting to record the Dawn Chorus in my garden but don't have a clue as to which microphone , or best type, to buy and where to buy it.

I think I need a directional Shot-gun microphone with a large Dead-Cat windscreen, and also about 3 meters of cable with the appropriate XLR plugs.

Can anyone please give me some advice.

Also, My Zoom H6 is playing up. I think I've changed an inportant option within the menues. I tried recording bird calls and the recording was extremely poor. Is there perhaps a function within the H6 that Re-sets the device back to factory settings.

I hope you are all okay and enjoying this period of noise pelution silence to get very nice recordings. If so I'd love to here some samples.

Very best wishes and please take care of yourselves.

Andy Logue from Scotland.

Hello Andy,

It is down to you and how much you want to spend. I follow the Booth Junky who uses a shotgun microphone a lot. He uses the Sennheiser MKH-416. I haven’t been able to afford one of those but I do have the MKH-166 which I purchased used from eBay. I absolutely love it and is my mic of choice. I think that would really do the job.

Regards,

Hi Andy. Another thing to consider is do you want stereo? Cause you could for $400 get a pair of factory matched for Stereo SE Electronics SE-8 mics. Or maybe 2 shot guns again so you get stereo. You don't think the Snap off XY H6 mics will do?

Your clip on microphones are actually very good mid range quality units.
As far as quality goes, any professional studio that you visit on either
coast will offer you a U87 or a 416 but you are not in a studio you are
outdoors. Your best choice for outside ambiance is the NT1a because of its
extremely low noise. You can get either a new or used one on ebay for a
fraction of the cost of a 416.

Ah my favorite of the mics Neal Ewers has. Andy 1 thing to be aware with the NT1-A though it is a large diaphragm. Thus it's big and heavy. Gena you still here? What did you tell me like a pound or something? But yeah not discuraging. I want the factory stereo matched pair of NT1-A mics. It's been my fave ever since hearing it on Neal's Sound-devices 744-T recorder. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like on an F6. Or even the F8 if you get 1 Andy.

From what I've read a shot-gun mike is so directional that even being off-target a little will result in poor quality sound. I doubt it would be the best for ambient recordings.

Yeah unless yoou are recording a particular thing. It's used in film because since it's long it can be far a bit and off camera. But for the reason you just said too. It'll only capture what you want it to. I think a stereo pair of mics would be better. Unless he's gona be far away. Wander why he thought of a shot gun in the first place.

Hi all who have responded thus far.

I've loads of questions regarding the NT1 microphone.

hamit you said that you'd like a set of these, factory set!

Are you saying that the NT1 is a Mono microphone? And for Sterio, you'd need 2 of these mics?

I've been listening, on the Accessible Youtube all morning and this microphone is considered to be one of the best Home Studio microphones. As I like to record small bands at my local pub as well as recording my local quire, I thought that this microphone may work out well.

I was concerned however as to how to record Vocals and strings in the pub with up to 5 artists, with a single microphone.

Below is a very short recording that I found on Youtube this morning.

I think this is of interest as the hole recording was done using the FT1 alone.

Have a listen at the link below.

https://www.sendspace.com/file/zej5e6

I' sure you will agree with me that it covered quite a broad front of this wee band.

Tell me what you think folks . Is this the mic I am looking for, though as I also like to record bird calls, I'd still need a second mic for out of doors with a shotgun and very high quality Dead Cat!

Up until now I was considering buying both the Sure 57 for strings and the Sure 58 for vokals. Good for recording a single singer like Cat Stevens or david Gray, but how about a band of 5 artists with 5 instraments?

Very best wishes.

I had a look at the link. Most bird watchers want to focus-record an individual bird song sometimes out of many background songs. A dawn Chorus is all the birds in the area - not just a single bird. As Hamit suggests a stereo mike might be more likely to do this successfully.

PS: last time I heard Andy was living in rural Scotland, so maybe not a big garden, but a lot of habitat. I know birds are territorial, but they tend to sing from adjoining gardens to, and I'm sure Andy isn't so possessive he only wants the birds singing in just his garden alone. You'll find a dawn chorus is just as big weather heard from a small garden or an estate for that very reason. 😉

Yeah man. Now if it were me and I were in Andy's place I'd get a whole bunch of mics 8 to be exact as he says he has the Zoom F8 to do 7.1 surround sound. Which is what I'd truely love to do. Hence why the H6 over the H5 which is what people grab when they buy the AT-8022 stereo mic I have. It's based on the AT-4021 by the way.

Hello Andy,

It would be useful if you provided the youtube link rather than a send space link. As I don’t have a send space account it demands I sign up.

Just a note about the Shure mics be very careful with them. There are a lot of counterfeit versions. See this link:

https://www.liveabout.com/spotting-a-fake-shure-microphone-1817723

As for the best mic. There is no such thing as the best mic. Because you would need the best pub as well. Every room is different, you add or take a chair away from that room or another person enters and the acoustics change. It really is down to price point. There are dedicated mics for drums, guitars etc. It also depends upon how much post processing you want to do. You need very good pre-amps that done’t introduce noise. Dynamic mics tend to give a low output so you have to crank up the pre-amp and the more you do that the more hiss and other noises are introduced into the recording. However, using a noise gate most of this is removed.

Regards,

Gena

It's been my fave ever since hearing it on Neal's Sound-devices 744-T recorder. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like on an F6. Or even the F8 if you get 1 Andy.

Subject: [all-audio] Microphones for Zoom

Hi all.

I've got both the Zoom H6 and the F8n, but the only microphones I have are
the 2 clip on ones that I origionally got with the H6.

I'm wanting to record the Dawn Chorus in my garden but don't have a clue as
to which microphone , or best type, to buy and where to buy it.

I think I need a directional Shot-gun microphone with a large Dead-Cat
windscreen, and also about 3 meters of cable with the appropriate XLR plugs.

Can anyone please give me some advice.

Also, My Zoom H6 is playing up. I think I've changed an inportant option
within the menues. I tried recording bird calls and the recording was
extremely poor. Is there perhaps a function within the H6 that Re-sets the
device back to factory settings.

I hope you are all okay and enjoying this period of noise pelution silence
to get very nice recordings. If so I'd love to here some samples.

Very best wishes and please take care of yourselves.

Andy Logue from Scotland.

Yes the NT1-A is a mono mic. The advantage of using 2 seprate mics is you can go as far apart as you wish. So I'd do ORTF with the 2 of them. But instead of the defacto 110 degree angle aiming i'd go 180 degrees. But if you do want a stereo mic the AT-8022 I have is epic. It's nice and wide. Now just so you are aware as it's home interview and home video focused it just like most speach mics can only hear up to 15 KHZ. There's also the Rode NT-4 but this thing's expensive. Well 200 dolars more than the 8022 and it can hear the full range from 20 Hz bass to the full 20 KHZ highs. This 1 is fixed in 90 degrees XY. You know what this looks like from the XY snap off of the H6.

Andy.

Hello Hamit,

What the NT1 or the NT1A. Apparently there is a mod to fix some issue. It seemed to be an American thing. So I didn’t look into it further.
