Jfw, scripts, Goldwave6, and loud noise in audio

Hello,
I'm using Goldwave6 with Jfw 2020 and it's scripts for same. I've got a piece of audio that has a rather loud noise in it. I've captured a sample of this noise not sure I got just the noise as it's very audio-overwhelming and i'd like to filter it out. Right now I'm trying to open the audio, then I'm going to save it as a flac file so I don't damaage the mp3 file by repeatedly working on it, I get a lossless file in the flac. I'm going to try to listen to just the left channel and just the right channel, see if one is clear and/or if one has the audio completely. This audio is just speech so any suggestions as to how I can filter appreciated. Note, I am not opposed to using other tools, I've got the latest audacity on this machine as well as have got the free-for-time thanks to kovid19, reaper. I've also got NVDA as a second screen reader. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Dave. |

It is kind of a personal nature. What I can do is provide a sample of the noise that resides in the file. I've tried everything I can to filter it out, drop the volume, tried some band pass/stop, low and high pass, but i'm either not doing it right, not the right settings, but I have reduced it, but in doing so the underlying audio the stuff I'm trying to hear gets really tinny sounding. Part of it is I did not make this and I think the person who did it did not do well with it, they encoded at 22050KHZ I think but it's slow, so that the full file is over 27 hours long, changing the rate to 44100 makes it intelligible and drops the file length to just over 13 hours. Here's the link to the interference pattern I'm trying to eliminate. Did you try the denoise function in goldwave? I am not sure this will

To my ears, this sounds like a monaural sound so it likely is the same on both channels, so using one channel or the other probably won't make much difference. Second, this noise seems to me to be pretty broad band, or at least it likely is strongest in the same frequency range that contains the information that makes speech intelligible. I don't think filtering by frequency is going to be very effective. Is this noise always there, does it repeat often, or is it a one-time sound? Replacing the noise with silence might be the best bet, although deleting the noise might also work unless it affects the rhythm of the rest of what is being recorded. If the sound is tinny, as you described it, it would seem you are not limiting the effects you are trying to the duration of the noise itself. This noise is so loud that I don't think you will be able to apply anything to the entire recording to get rid of it. Still, if you can describe whether this sound is constant, repeats often, or just happens a few times, that might influence what one might do. Best regards, Steve -----Original Message-----
