Olympus DM-720 Question

Tom Kaufman

Hello list: Have sort of a "low-tech" question: I need to change the
battery/batteries in my Olympus DM-720 recorder; I know this is probably a
stupid question, but where is the place on the back of this recorder to open
the battery compartment? Also, once I have found it (and I think maybe I
have found it) how do I cause the little door to open? I've pressed on this
button that seems to be pressing in.but no soap; the door still does not
open! What is the magic mov I need to make in order to make the door open
for me? I'm not real good at these sort of things; something I don't fully
understand why! Do I have to "push and slide at the same time? Just what
is it I need to do here? Forgive my stupitidy here, but your help will be
tgreatly appreciated!

Press down and slide it, and it should work.

Byron: Which way to I slide? So far...no luck; I know this is the way some
cordless phones work (never really have had luck with those either) will
keep trying!

Maybe the 720 is like the 520, huh?  If it is, just press the little round button and then slide the battery cover tward theUSB port end of the device.

I finally got it done; somehow I just always have problems with tasks like this; same with the cordless phones: you're supposed to press and slide! But never have been that good at making it happen! But I did get the door open and got the new battery in! However, I got a surprise: it asked me to "match the battery type" this threw me, for I'm not sure of what "type" battery it is (am assuming it is alkaline"...hopefully this is correct! Am recording tonight, so guess will see how it does!

The battery that comes with the unit is a rechargeable nickel Metal hydride.

Yes, the battery is two AAA cells.  I couldn't get mine set up to charge so I've been using normal alcoline cells.  And it's been so long now, I can't remember where I put the rechargeable cells.

Its only really an issue for charging the battery using the USB connector.
However, you should be able to set it in the device menu, by pressing the middle button below the screen to enter the menus and arrowing up to device. I can't recall exactly where the setting is right now.

The easiest way to do this follows:

1. Remove the battery. You might wait a minute or so and put the battery back in.
2. Power on the unit. When prompted to select type of battery, choose nickel metal hydride.

you only knew how I fight to get things like this to open up (should be

Tom,

I understand what you are saying. Good luck going through the menu. In case it helps, steps for changing battery type via menu follow.
1. There are three buttons under the display. Tap the middle button. You will hear ” file menu”.
2. Down arrow repeatedly until you hear “ Device settings”.
3. Tap the play button. Also known as the OK button.
4.Tap down arrow repeatedly until you hear something about battery.
5. Down arrow and till you hear nickel metal hydride.
6. Tap the play button.
7. Tap the stop button, or tap left arrow several times until you hear a series of beeps indicating you are out of the menus.

As for opening the battery door, I really do understand how difficult it can be. However, in case it would be helpful, consider the following.
1. Position the recorder so that the microphone is at the top and you are looking at the back.
2. I believe you found the button that has to be pushed in, use one hand to push in on this button.
3. Use the other hand to touch the battery door left of the button. The door is quite long. So you can use multiple fingers, and you don’t have to touch immediately left of the button. Push in on the battery door a little bit. Slide the door to your left as you are pushing in on the door. You can release the button at this point.
Good luck,
Katrina

Tom, I recall that there is some kind of setting in the Olympus to tell it not to try and recharge the battery that's in it when it's plugged into a USB port. So, if you can't find this setting, try not to leave it plugged into a USB port for a long time, or you might explode the alkaline battery.

Failing that, rechargeable AAA's are easy to find, and not terribly expensive.

Well, the answer to that can depend on a couple of things. If you exited the menus as I instructed, and if you were already in a folder before you went into the menus, you will turn the recorder on and be in the same folder you were in before. Turning off the recorder automatically takes you out of the menu settings. However, depending upon whether you were in a folder before you went into the settings, will depend upon what happens when you turn the recorder on. When you turn the recorder on, tap the play button. If a recording does not play, or if the boys doesn’t say “file not found”, tap the play button again. Keep tapping the play button until you hear a recording you have made or you here “file not found”. That should put you inside of a folder, possibly in folder “a” if this doesn’t help, tell me what you hear or what happens and I will try again.

Katrina.

Press down and slide it, and it should work.

Subject: [all-audio] Olympus DM-720 Question

Hello list: Have sort of a "low-tech" question: I need to change the
battery/batteries in my Olympus DM-720 recorder; I know this is
probably a
stupid question, but where is the place on the back of this recorder to
open
the battery compartment? Also, once I have found it (and I think maybe
I
have found it) how do I cause the little door to open? I've pressed on
this
button that seems to be pressing in.but no soap; the door still does
not
open! What is the magic mov I need to make in order to make the door
open
for me? I'm not real good at these sort of things; something I don't
fully
understand why! Do I have to "push and slide at the same time? Just
what
is it I need to do here? Forgive my stupitidy here, but your help will
be
tgreatly appreciated!
