There are several ways to reduce noise. You can start with the NT1A, you
can switch from the H6 to the F8N which has a lot more noise free gain or
you can stick with a mic of your choice and the H6 and buy a cloud lifter.

Andy you can hear the pre-amp hiss on your bird recording. There are 2

Oh I see. I might listen out to understand what is achieved by such arrangements. I listened to a couple of reviews of the Rode NT-FS1 and I just don’t get it. I listened hard to hear an interesting stereo image but didn’t hear one. Yes a lovely recording and quality. But I would expect that from an £900 mic. You have expensive taste. The most expensive mic I have in my collection is a lewitt LTC-550 which I purchased second hand.

Hello,

Yes there are lots. But as you would have seen we have been discussing polar patterns and where to employ them. So what type of mic? Some like the Shure MV88. Others use the Blue Yetti with the camera connection kit. At least with the yeti you can choose between cardioid, figure of 8 and omnidirectional. But like with the Zoom it depends on how you want to employ it and how deep is your pocket.

I ask for sighted assistance when alighting from the train from Scotrail staff to walk me out to Gavins St.

I turn left , then left again and walk down to the Highlanders Umbrela on Argyle Street.

I walk along to the crossing at Jamaca St, cross the crossing to the other side and walk down to Richard Sounds and to Kenny's Mucic next door.

I can usually get bits and bobs in these shops.

Then I'd go back up Jamaca street and cross Argyle St agian and walk right up Buchanan street to the Apple store and onto Northface for something for walking the hills, like a new fleese.

Here is the interesting bit, continue to Walk up Buchanan St and glide over to the right side and look for Greggs.

Buy 2 of their lovely Vegan sausage rolls and cut through the path to Dows Bar, just at Queen St station and have a couple of ice Cold Beers .

Normally I'd cross the road into Queen St Stn and get a train to Helensburgh.

Go into the Station Bar for another beer, then get the bus to Kilcreggan and a 2 mile walk up the hill to my home.

Now John , that is indeed a really grand day out and there is nothing Truer than the statement that Glasgow really is the Friendly City, for as you know, the people in the city are just fantastic and you don't even kneed to ask for assistance, it's just there all the time in 3D friendlyness.

Only one thing John, I'd rather have a lovely day rather than pissing rain, which is often the case unfortunately.

I love binaural recordings. Although, as a wee flight of fancy, for that authentic effect you'd want a plastic head to clip them to, or maybe, a head brace to clip them to your own head to be fully immersive as you walk down the street. Lol.

The better way and professional way is to mic up each member of the band with a mic that has the dynamic range of that sound source. So a mic for a guitarist is different to that for a vocalist. If the band wanted you to make a CD for them this is what you need to do. These mics would be cardioid polar pattern.

Right at the other end you have a covert recording where you would have a smart phone or other recording device in your pocket and wear a tie pin omnidirectional microphone. Such a recording will not include the close up details as the above professional recording.

Somewhere in the middle of those two extremes is where in the real every day world that we live in. The disadvantage of the omnidirectional is that it picks up everything, so in the pub situation someone puts a glass down on the table and it is now a part of the music. I think every pub has a squeaky door, so when someone goes to the toilet, those sounds become a part of the music. It is not until we start recording we realise how much our mind filters out. If we want to hear the band we unconsciously filter out the noise made by the others in the audience. But the recorder does not filter this out, if the mic hears it then it is heard on the recording. Which actually can sound better than a studio recording because it has character.

In answer to your question. I don’t know. It is for you to try different mics in different situations so that you learn what you like. But you have said that you want a big sound stage which means you want a omnidirectional. When you have experienced the limitations of those mics you might want to narrow the stage to get less of the unwanted noise and better subject matter. It is only you who knows what you want to gain and how much you want to learn against how much you just want to get the job done. We are not computers so can’t be programmed to understand we need some experience to work from. You have done a recording of a dawn chorus and it is up to you. If you were able to watch a television would you want to stand back and get the whole picture with reasonable detail. Then you want a omnidirectional microphone that you can protect from the weather. As some condenser mics are easily destroyed by moisture. So on that logic you are looking at a dynamic omnidirectional. The quality is dependent upon the size of your wallet.

However, if you want more detailed image then you would get closer to the television and just focus upon a smaller area but at greater death and detail. The Shotguns would record birds in a small group of trees not one bird in a particular tree as others have suggested. The cardioid pattern is like imagining the mic has a funnel on the end of it. So the further from the mic the wider the spread. But never to its sides or back. Thus if you had a noisy road or farm machinery you could place the mic so those sources are behind the mic.

It is fun to try different microphones and see what harvests your fields. If you do use a quiet dynamic microphone you might want to consider using a fethead so that you don’t have to crank up those pre-amps. They are really terrible on the H6.

It's about £600 and is a USB microphone, which I think would make it a good podcasting microphone, for a home studio computer.

So I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment and need to give it a lote more consideration.

They don’t cut out sharply it’s usually shown as a heart shape tapering down to the point. Obviously, Andy has done some research and his post caused me to do so as I use a shotgun in the booth. Andy did not want ambient sound. He wanted to record bird song from his garden. Unless he lives in a huge estate it is not going to be that wide of a field. I found that bird watchers use a shotgun mic although this is with a camera. Even professional sound recordist uses a shotgun. See this:

It is down to you and how much you want to spend. I follow the Booth Junky who uses a shotgun microphone a lot. He uses the Sennheiser MKH-416. I haven’t been able to afford one of those but I do have the MKH-166 which I purchased used from eBay. I absolutely love it and is my mic of choice. I think that would really do the job.

I did get the extension with an extra 2 xlr's. I also bought a 3 mtr xlr cable, so I can sit at the side of a band and not in front of the band. Never had a chance to use this.

Georgina, a Pixi Mic??? Never bought that but sounds interesting if you do like it. I also purchased the Dead Cate,, which is wonderful, perhaps the best I've seen and not too expensive.

I ask for sighted assistance when alighting from the train from Scotrail staff to walk me out to Gavins St.

I turn left , then left again and walk down to the Highlanders Umbrela on Argyle Street.

I walk along to the crossing at Jamaca St, cross the crossing to the other side and walk down to Richard Sounds and to Kenny's Mucic next door.

I can usually get bits and bobs in these shops.

Then I'd go back up Jamaca street and cross Argyle St agian and walk right up Buchanan street to the Apple store and onto Northface for something for walking the hills, like a new fleese.

Here is the interesting bit, continue to Walk up Buchanan St and glide over to the right side and look for Greggs.

Buy 2 of their lovely Vegan sausage rolls and cut through the path to Dows Bar, just at Queen St station and have a couple of ice Cold Beers .

Normally I'd cross the road into Queen St Stn and get a train to Helensburgh.

Go into the Station Bar for another beer, then get the bus to Kilcreggan and a 2 mile walk up the hill to my home.

Now John , that is indeed a really grand day out and there is nothing Truer than the statement that Glasgow really is the Friendly City, for as you know, the people in the city are just fantastic and you don't even kneed to ask for assistance, it's just there all the time in 3D friendlyness.

Only one thing John, I'd rather have a lovely day rather than pissing rain, which is often the case unfortunately.

If we want to hear the band we unconsciously filter out the noise made by the others in the audience. But the recorder does not filter this out, if the mic hears it then it is heard on the recording. Which actually can sound better than a studio recording because it has character.

In answer to your question. I don’t know. It is for you to try different mics in different situations so that you learn what you like. But you have said that you want a big sound stage which means you want a omnidirectional. When you have experienced the limitations of those mics you might want to narrow the stage to get less of the unwanted noise and better subject matter. It is only you who knows what you want to gain and how much you want to learn against how much you just want to get the job done. We are not computers so can’t be programmed to understand we need some experience to work from. You have done a recording of a dawn chorus and it is up to you. Either to accept that is how it is or think how can I make the next one different.

I used AIRA to set fantom power. I don’t recall instructions precise enough to do it blindly. They may be there but I was listening to it for another reason. Having sighted support from the phone 24 / 7 is a lot easier than hoping that all the clicks registered. I personally find that it is quite a dodgy navigation method.

As for turning the Phantom Power on or off, well Neal covers this in his Review of the H6 I posted earlier

I can tell you it's in the input outpoot menu. But as I just have Abby read me the screen I can't tell you exactly if it's tthird or forth down in that menu. Than you have to scrole threw the tracks to light up the 1 you want. I keep reminding Zoom to please oh please make the thing talk even if they have someone sit in a studio like Olympus did. Because and Abby herself pointed this out that the choice changes if you have the tracks linked or not. I too would like the ritten menus if someone got them when Neal had them. That's when I first started experiencing his none responding. This way I don't keep having to ask abby. Also I don't have to wait for her to show up. This was 1 of the things that had me on the fence at first. I then went with the H6 because Dain Trethowen himself once said on a thread about accessibility of recorders well what do you want. A thing that is blind people specific or quality? So I said ya know what? I choose quality. What's more Olympus had just discontinued the LS-100. Which would have had 2 advantages over any of the Zooms. Well the charging of the battery I don't know if no Zooms don't so resurve judgment on that. But the 100 talked so you could set the menus. Now the actual third thing related to phantum is actually an advantage for sighted and or blind people. The LS-100 had switches like the Marantz recorders do. So you don't as Curtis Jud says have to dive threw menus. But meh I went with the H6 in the end for 2 reasons. It's brighter sounding then the Olympus was, and as you can get 6 chanals if you get the EX H6 2 extra XLRs snap off 1 could make 5.1 recordings with it. But yes if someone has that tree Neal said he'd make please pass it on.

All electronic devices make a noise but most of them are out of our hearing range. An amplifier does make a noise especially when it is cranked up to it’s maximum. The Zoom 6 pre-amps are known for being noisy. So can you quote Neil saying that the Zoom 6 preamps are not noisy?

Andy you can hear the pre-amp hiss on your bird recording. There are 2 ways you could eliminate or at least reduce that hiss if you wanted. That I know of.

Ah fair enough Gena. I always thought he just told SoundForge or Studio Recorder save as 192 KBPS MP3 and that's that. But perhaps he did do stuff to the files. Yes you're right his voice is real bassie. Also I've found on some podcasts he either records at a real low level or he lowers them in SoundForge. The last thing is that for instance when he does the NT1-A demos he does them in his PC room. So you have his battery backups humming. I understand that he perhaps uses them to get the levels right but once that is done I'd recommend going into that room that he goes into that has lots of echo to it and do the demo there. This way we hear the true silence or lack there of.

Yes, but he has a nice deep voice and he doesn’t state what post production processing he does to make it small enough for people to download. Either he has knocked off the highs or they just have got lost in .mp3 compression.

Andy you can hear the pre-amp hiss on your bird recording. There are 2 ways you could eliminate or at least reduce that hiss if you wanted. That I know of.

Hello Andy,

I didn’t hear him say that. He said it was amazingly quiet. In context he was comparing different recorders. Further more he did not use a dynamic mic such as the Shure SM7B. In fact he used a mic that claims to be the quietest mic on the planet.. In addition, he did not state how much post production processing he did. Even converting into .mp3 would reduce the noise because this is how compression works by throwing out the bits of audio we don’t need.

Perhaps, I missed that quote.

Hi. Ah yes the axesories pack. No but I want to. If nothing but for that remote and the wind screen. I also would love to buy the EX H6 snap off. That's the snap off with the 2 extra XLRs. Note that if you wana use condencers into those you will need an external power source as this peace doesn't get phantum.

Andy did you know you could get a long extension cable for your mics. I also like the sound of the pixy mount.
