Thanks Andy. As you probably know, you can also create the files in MP3
format at various bit rates if you prefer.

By default, I think the files are placed in the CDEX folder in Program

I know nothing about audio cable, I am discussing a function in total
Recorder. This can be used to time shift a recording or immediate capture.
I believe GoldWave has a similar feature

My winamp (5.666) will play most .m4a files. I have downloaded a lot of plugins for it over the years to give it the ability to play different formats though and I can't recall if that was one. Maybe

Sounds like you got it solved. Just a bit of clarification of my own though; an m3u file is nothing more than a text file that contains a playlist.
