All it takes is one typo these days. I did that during an install for XP
when it was fairly fresh. A quick scan from another computer showed the
virus. I restarted the install formatting the disk in the process. Of course,
I had no AV running interference at the time. With an AV your probability

I'm pretty sure it's involved with Zadig. They have a forum for discussing
it. I think you can find it via their SourceForge entry. There might even
be an answer already - heck - I'm sure there is. I don't have time to go
find it, though.

I had downloaded the ADS-B software rtl1090.exe (my original inspiration for buying the dongles in the first place). It did not work either. I tested it after getting SDRSharp working. It was broken. I ran it as an administrator and no issues; I can see data from aircraft transponders.

I lock down my "user" logins to my computers for my normal day to day access. (I am an IT professional, specializing in security, and know the hazards of running as an administrator. I do not run as root on even my Linux boxes.)

When installing programs I am aware of the Right Click > Run as Administrator and use that when needed (as with Zadig.exe). I am kicking myself for not trying to run the base program as Administrator sooner. My guess is most of the people that run these programs (rtl1090, SDRSharp, etc.) are geeky like me but prefer to run as an administrator. I am far less reckless and avoid doing that. Or maybe I'm paranoid? :) I wish you luck and hope this helps you.

Hopefully someone is monitoring this thread that develops the software and can help troubleshoot where the problem lies. Based on previous experience with commercial software developers have coded as an administrator and don't see the permission problems.

Well, it's good you're getting somewhere at last. Win 7 is remarkably
fussy and if you're a security wonk you may have your system locked down
too tightly. I do some device driver work so I had to open my system
up a slight bit. So many other people got this all running with Win 7
64 bits that I forgot about it.

Same thing with rtl_test.exe. If I run command prompt as a user "No Supported

I have been doing everything correctly. There is a piece of information MISSING (or at least for my computer) in the instructions. I shall explain.

I have been using the Right Click > Run as Administrator for years. I used this for the install.bat and for Zadig.exe. Everything appeared to have installed correctly and as far as I know it DID every time. When I found a working version of rtl_test.exe it told me I didn't have any supported devices installed. Running SDRSharp.exe gave an error message and no choice showed up for RTL-SDR / USB.

As a hunch I ran SDRSharp.exe with the Right Click > Run as Administrator. No error message! In the pull down there was a RTL-SDR / USB choice! I selected this and hit play. STATIC. But the spectrum analyzer had all sort of peaks. Punching in a known good frequency brought in a local FM station. I exit and run SDRSharp.exe without Administrator and I'm back to the error message and no RTL-SDR / USB.

Thanks! Seems to recognize the SDR dongle which prior installs didn't. Now I can only get a very high pitched single signal across all frequencies.

Someone also suggested that there could be a conflict with a TV Tuner card that I have installed in the computer. Thoughts?

Your problem is not in SDRSharp, it would appear.

At the risk of repeating myself endlessly, run the rtl_test.exe test. If
it fails you're dead in the water if all you try to change is SDRSharp.

Re: [SDRSharp] Re: No rtl-sdr/usb in dropdown menu

jdow <jdow@...>

Run some tests with rtl_test.exe to see if you have the dongle in a
configuration that rtlsdr.dll can find it. If rtl_test.exe cannot
find the dongle then SDRSharp will not either and the problem is
likely involved with file permissions, Windows security, or the Zadig
installation.

No amount of trying with SDRSharp alone, editing config files or anything
else, will make it work.

When I start SDR# I get the following window first:

Error loading 'SDRSharp.RTLSDR.RtlSdrIO,SDRSharp.RTLSDR' - Exception has
been thrown by the target of invocation.

Google searches says this is caused by the config file not being in the
right directory. My config file IS in the SDRSharp directory which is

I'm beginning to think there is an obscure bug haunting some of us.

Re: [SDRSharp] Re: Weather satellite reception need some help

Dick <Noortvd@...>

Hi Lew,

Sure I can.

There are good instructions to be found on the internet, which I followed to
1. get my RPi up and running
2. install the dump1090 software, which uses an RTL dongle connected to the RPi and feeds decoded data to Planeplotter.
3. install rtl_tcp software, which uses a second RTL dongle connected to the RPi and feeds the I/Q data to SDR# that runs on my
laptop.
Both do work simultaneously.

I do control the RPi from remote using PUTTY.EXE
Here are a few internet sources I used to get it up and running:
http://zr6aic.blogspot.nl/2013/02/setting-up-my-raspberry-pi-as-sdr-server.html
http://www.satsignal.eu/ntp/Raspberry-Pi-NTP.html#headless
http://sdr.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/rtl-sdr
http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=45142

As to being able to run it over the internet instead of just your local network, I guess it all depends on the bandwidth you have
available on the internet.
Ofcourse you also have to make sure you can reach the RPi from the internet by
a. enabling some ports in the routers you are using and
b. configuring your firewall (or both).

There are scripts that will 'autostart' all you need on the RPi.

PM me if you need more details/help.

Cheers,
Dick

THe main thing is would it work over the internet, I know it can work on a local network but going over the internet is a
different matter

I have a RasberryPi I "could" use if necessary but I'd rather it worked in Windows because I can control the windows computer from
the UK to reset it or make changes if needed, where the Pi I wouldn't be able to.

I want to put an rtl dongle in a relatives house in Ireland to pick up the
weather satellites which use the 137-138Mhz to send the signals to earth

I can't have the reciever here because there is a 137.975Mhz just up the
road from me and it totally degrades the satellite signal on overhead
passes.

In Ireland they don't use 138Mhz for pagers. hence why I want to put the
reciever remotely over there.

Is it possible to remote mount the rtl dongle and send the signal over the
internet to use SDRSharp here in england to select the exact frequency and
then use the decoder program?

Any idea how I can do it, or if it will work?

I wont be wanting to tune any other frequencies only 137-138Mhz and only 3
or 4 spot frequencies in that band

I only had to install EXTIO when I installed HDSDR.

I have been experimenting some more, still no luck. I do not get the RTL-SDR/USB option when running SDR#. Windows says the driver is installed. Zadig says the driver is installed.
I deleted any SDRSharp installs I had and started fresh. I started with the NIGHTLY download. Specifically I went here:
http://sdrsharp.com/index.php/downloads
I downloaded this:
http://sdrsharp.com/downloads/sdr-nightly.zip
I expanded the ZIP file to:
C:\SDRSharpNIGHTLY
I ran the SDRSharp.exe and did not get the popup message I normally get. Still no RTL-SDR/USB in the pull down. I opened the SDRSharp.exe.config in NotePad and the line for USB was commented out. It was NOT this way in the stable release install.
<!-- <add key="RTL-SDR / USB" value="SDRSharp.RTLSDR.RtlSdrIO,SDRSharp.RTLSDR" /> -->
I removed the comments. I launched SDRSharp.exe. I get the error message:
Error loading 'SDRSharp.RTLSDR.RtlSdrIO,SDRSharp.RTLSDR' - Could not load the file or assembly 'SDRSharp.RTLSDR' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
A slightly different error than what is generated by the stable release. This gave me something to go on.
I assume this is referring to the SDRSharp.RTLSDR.dll as are the other parameters of a similar nature. Searching the directory there is not a file with this name. Should there be? If so, where do I get it?

You MUST have NET 3.5. Not NET 4.0 SDR# requires NET 3.5 specifically.

Drivers are in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and are:

winsusb.sys, WdfCoInstaller01011.dll, WindusbCoInstaller2.dll

When I start SDR# I get the following window first:

Error loading 'SDRSharp.RTLSDR.RtlSdrIO,SDRSharp.RTLSDR' - Exception has
been thrown by the target of invocation.

Google searches says this is caused by the config file not being in the
right directory. My config file IS in the SDRSharp directory which is
in the ROOT of the C:\ drive.

I'm beginning to think there is an obscure bug haunting some of us.

If ZADIG warned you that the driver was already installed, you did not remove the drivers as I suggested. You have to remove the drivers for the device.

On one PC I have, it insisted on installing its own drivers. I had to let it, change that to NOT USE DEVICE in the device manager, then ZADIG would install the correct drivers and everything was fine.

Perhaps your PC is installing the drivers while you are trying to run everything else. (in which case follow the above instructions).

It certainly sounds like your OS is hijacking the device.

In my first several attempts (before deleting everything) I DID download sdr-install.zip. It contains three files: httpget.exe, install.bat, unzip.exe. I ran the batch file. It created a directory sdrsharp. (Looking at my dirlist for this directory I did have the needed DLL using this.) I have tried this install MULTIPLE ways.

So I deleted everything again including the ZIP files.
I downloaded the file sdr-install.zip specified in your posting. It contains a folder sdr-install and I extracted it and the three files within.

I ran the batch file and it created a folder called sdrsharp. It contains a zadig.exe and the SDRSharp.RTLSDR.dll that was not part of the NIGHTLY release I just attempted to use.
