Re: HF+ vs NetSDR Comparison

Hello all-
At http://sdr-radio.com/AirspyHFPlus With regard to the NDB band comparision- when I click on the two 'thumbnails' to pull up more detailed screenshots, the HF+ screenshot is taken at 21:05:38 while the NetSDR screenshot is at 22:04:02. Signal and noise levels in the NDB band can vary quite a bit in that amount of time. Probably due to a file naming hiccup during webpage creation. 73, Joe F. KC8RKL

Airspy R2 + Spyverter R2 questions
Normand Fortin
Hi everyone, my 1st post, quick intro, i've been scanning for 30+ years,
SDR"ing" for the last 3 years, with several nooelec dongles including v3. I jumped in the Airspy / spyverter wagon couple weeks ago with the R2 versions. So far the Space WX has been rocking since then (East Canada often covered in auroral spwx lately) so i haven't had a chance to give it a good test although i received good bits from time to time. I'm using a long wire 30' connected to a Miracle whip antenna preselector that was working awesome in any previous setup, but the spys are so sensitive i might have to rethink it. But first, questions: 1 - The airspy unit gets warmer while in use and this is expected, the Spyverter remains room temp, i was expecting it to warm up as well, is that normal? (bias Tee is on and i do receive stuff, not much more than nooelec v3) 2- I started as suggested with linearity gain but does somebody has a "recipe" with free gains control i tried several with mitigated success til now ? 3- Is there a decimation sweetspot that yield better isolation of faint signals? 4- I will have a hamitup noise source handy soon, is there some reference signal specs i can use to test and make sure my Airspy / SV combo is up to what it should be? To further clean up rx, i will use a cavity / fm trap as i can see some overloading and also make a copper box for antenna connection. The spy's are a different beast, and although a read a lot on it, i'd like some inputs, including your current rx performance in the actual sun condition. I follow closely Simon HF+ testing as well (really promising), so if somebody has some figures for R2 versions, i could rule out the defective unit possibility (although least probable but this is the 1 check to be done before blaming it on SPWX / location) Thanks Norm Monitoring waves from Quebec, Canada

Re: Why can't i change samplerate?
EB4APL
Hi Ruben, A more easier (and safer) way to change the audio sample rate is: - In the Source Tab, select a radio that is Sound Card based,
i.e. "Softrock (Si570)" or "IQ from Sound Card". You don't need
to have installed the selected hardware. - Now the Sample Rate selections are enabled in the Audio Tab. Select what you want. - In the Source Tab, now select back your radio, i.e. AIRSPY. The sample rate box in the audio Tab is grayed out, but your previous selection is kept. - Exit the program. All your configuration is saved in the SDRSharp.exe CONFIG file for future use. A note of caution: errors when manually editing the configuration file translates into bad things, so be very careful when editing it manually. I do it from time to time, but I recommend to avoid it if possible, as in this case. 73 de Ignacio, EB4APL

In meantime.... Play with Spyserver!

The server is received in Modena with SdrSharp 1583 BTW the cw station received is IQ2MI/B, 275 Km far away, installed on Capanna Regina Margherita c/o Monte Rosa at 4560 Mt on sea level. 73 IW4ENS Roberto

I will try it.

You can force a different sample rate by editing the SDRSharp.exe CONFIG file. That file is an ASCII text file that you can modify with a text editor like Notepad and contains two vales related to sample rate. The first one is about 30 rows down from the top of the file and is something like: <add key="minOutputSampleRate" value="96000" /> The second one is about 35 rows up from the bottom of the file and is something like: <add key="sampleRate" value="192000 sample/sec" /> You can adjust the values to whatever works for your SDR dongle and system sound card. I hope this helps. Ken, WB0OCV

Re: HF+ vs NetSDR Comparison
You are most likely confusing the "dBm" scale with the actual noise floor (Check the MDS in the spec sheet). There are only two things to check in these screenshots:
* SNR => A slight advantage for the HF+ * Overloading => also a slight advantage for the HF+

Ahhh... I didn't see there were multiples. The first one (VLF).

The others are more of a trade-off. 10 dB lower noise floor and signal. Still, quite a respectable performance against a unit that costs around 10 times more. Joe M.

I'm guessing you refer to the VLF non-directional beacon plots. Remember, its not about absolute levels but (S+N)/N ratios. Dave - WØLEV

Yes,
I did when I first received it and added support. From memory the HF+ has better MDS & Dynamic Range, I could bring it into the radio room/office but it’s usually in use remotely by a colleague in the US.

If something is grayed, it means it's not applicable to your context.
You are not streaming from a sound card.
