Custom E6B playtest

Philip Markgraf

Shack, Betsy, and Shaken have gotten together to test out a new “custom E6B”, plus the updated Flogger and Sea Harrier ADCs.

The custom E6B simplifies calculations in Step A (alt, Q, and Mach), hopefully speeding play. There will be later versions adding improvements to step E (engine output) and step B (turning). It adds an indexer on top of the spinner inner ring. The indexer is a clear plastic piece with a line down the center. This lets us do calculations with rings that don’t touch. It also makes the “find a value, then spin another value under it” operations easier (like the R over 36 and D over 34 operations), as you can hold the indexer over the found value (D or R) and spin the desired constant under it.

We set up a 1 v 2 setup with post-Falklands Sea Harrier FRS.1 (with AIM-9L) vs Syrian MiG-23MS (with R-13M). Notionally the Floggers blew an attempted pincer and spit the SHar through.

Cool! How did it go ?  And excellent on custom E6B.   I have a couple of USMC AV-8 scenarios, would love to see the Harr update

The game is in progress, as you can see from the other updates.

Both sets of ADC improvements are working as desired. The Harrier acceleration is much more sensible for a plane with high T:W ratio.

The desire to keep the Flogger wings forward is much diminished. You still might do so if you got overly slow, but that is probably okay. Betsy considered this for a bit, but soon recognized that the Flogger is better off accelerating out of a low speed problem, rather than trying to play angles fighter.

IIRC the acceleration was about 50% higher at around 500kts / 40 alt (8000') compared to the previous ADC values.

Yes, especially as the MiG-23 could sustain ~5G turns at 40 alt (8000') and the safe load wings forward was only 4.5G
I particularly like the way the new ratings with respect to max G bring about that choice naturally rather than by imposing speed limits directly. You find it tactically disadvantageous to fly wings forward and for the reasons reported in the literature. (Although I still don't find the high speed departure effect all that scary).

I did almost try wings forward as part of a "let's see what happens" playtest datapoint. But I resisted the temptation and flew the plane as intended.
