It is ALL Experimental!

Amateur radio aboard the International Space Station is an experiment. And one in a rather unique environment.

Yes, amateur radio is involved in the ISS’ “master plan” as a communications system. And I believe it was used once for “official” comms between it and ground stations many years ago.

But please: Don’t get upset/angry that we aren’t receiving images this week. The astronauts aboard the ISS aren’t sitting around and not doing anything. If you go the Web sites of the space agencies involved, you can see the daily
schedules of activities. Couple that with the fact that they mainly work on UTC time ... and add to all that that today is Yuri Gagarin Day - Astronauts’ Day in Russia, when many ground-based personnel are busy with those special activities ...

SO ... please know I have never read a story indicating that any ham astronaut dislikes working us from the ISS. And they love the ARISS contacts with schools (well over 1,000 of those have been accomplished!).

There is a technical glitch with the current SSTV project. Use this to your advantage! Monitor for packet ... get your neighbors out and watch the ISS streak across the sky ... whip out that tape measure beam and discuss “line of sight” ...

Therenis plenty to enjoy and teach this weekend - whether SSTV gets back up or not!

We are having parallel experiences, Floyd!
My 18:30 UTC pass today was nothing, no RF at
All. Hopefully those nice Folks up there will
Be able to fix things!

OK, Mark, then I can check off my new RTL-SDR dongle that came in
yesterday as not being the problem (my FunCube Dongle went south on the
same day).  My last pass was nil; not even RF...
Hopefully they'll extend the dates or resked like last time we had this
problem

I’m just happy to have the opportunity to do this whole hobby at all and if things were always guaranteed to go as planned, it would just be boring. Figuring stuff out is a big part of the fun.

On a 17:17, 75 degree pass, I received very weak signals, but copied a poor scan. Has anyone tried a preamp to see if it improves the signal?

I have seen decent results when people record the pass, then use audio processing software to increase and decode ...

Glad I caught a couple early-in-the-project passes - whose signals and data were clean and strong!

Same here, Clint. The first day passes had great audio.

Ok gents, I need some help. I’ve been trying desperately to find out how to use my FTM400 connected directly to the computer to receive SSTV from the ISS.

So far I’ve been using the XYL’s Logitech usb headset hung over the 400’s Ext. Skpr which works well, but I’m hoping there is a way to use my computer’s builtin sound card directly from the radio.

Anyone played with the FTM400 for that other than WiresX ?

sstv from ISS low but got 2 pics
