According to the Cadex Corp ...

"The Eneloop NiMH by Panasonic and Sanyo has reduced the self-discharge by a factor of six. This means you can store the charged battery six times longer than a regular NiMH before a recharge becomes necessary. The drawback of the Eneloop to regular NiMH is a slightly lower specific energy."

The manufacturers of Eneloop also state their cells can be charged up to "2,000+" times - which is a little 
contrary to existing literature on the NiMH chemistry. The Eneloop "Pro" only "500" charges.

The stock NiMH pack for the Yaesu FT-60R is the 1400mAH FNB-83. About US$36 at Yaesu dealers everywhere.
Properly charged, you should achieve about 1,000 discharge-charge cycles from quality NiMH packs. 

Personally, I still use the empty Yaesu FBA-25 AA "shell" and populate it with 2700mAH Maha NiMH AA
cells. That instantly nearly "doubles" my run time (from stock 1400 to 2700mAH).

I further increase my run time by improving my antenna, and turning DOWN the TX power to 2W. I mean, 
if you are not making it line-of-sight with a decent antenna at 2W on 2M and 440 - then you're probably not 
going to make it at full TX 4-5W power. (Example: I worked the ISS FM voice when it was a few hundred
miles downrange at 2W and a handheld tape measure beam.)

I FURTHER increase my battery run time by using a headset or speaker-mic. What eats up batteries? Keying 
the mic and transmitting, and turning up the VOLume of the received audio. What is the first thing you do when 
you have a shoulder-mounted speaker-mic or are wearing a headset? You turn the VOLume DOWN.

SO ... Just using the stock 1400mAH battery packs - there's how to more than DOUBLE time between charges: 
improve your antenna, turn TX power down, and use an audio accessory!

There are Li-Ion packs for the FT-60R. The advantages pf Li-Ion are that they will maintain their charge longer 
than NiMH, and they perform better in freezing temperatures. And they weigh a little less than their NiMH 
counterparts.

Personally, I do not charge up a radio and put it away for months - to be used later. And I do not live in 
a frigid region. And the minimal weight difference? Nothing to get excited about.

BUT - quality Li-Ion packs will only provide about ONE-HALF the total number of discharge-charge cycles 
as NiMH provides.

And so it goes ... Happy 2019!

'85 has a damaged/defective receive antenna. And, most recently, it is suffering 
from low onboard power problems: We are not to use it for the time being.

SO-50? Just a little off-frequency ... as well as our longest-lasting FM voice bird. 
Just take a little more finesse than '91 ans '92 - STILL very workable with 4-5W 
and gain antenna!

I do have the 5W HT, but can you bring me up to speed as to why the SO-50 and the AO-85 are a little more difficult to get into? I have not tried those.

AO-85 Update

As you probably know, AO-85 has had issues recently with the batteries
dropping precariously low during eclipse. We think it's likely the batteries suffered degradation due to heat during previous periods of no eclipses.

This has made it difficult to keep the satellite available for use without
endangering the batteries. Today the nominally 3.6v pack was down to 2.8v at the end of the eclipse. That is dangerously low.

In an effort to extend the useable life of the satellite, this evening we
turned both the IHU and the transmitter off. This ceases all transmissions, including the beacons every two minutes in both sunlit and eclipsed parts of the orbit. We will periodically turn the satellite back on for an orbit or two, in order to gather telemetry. If all goes as planned, we will turn the repeater back on during the next period of no eclipses beginning around January 24th. In the meantime, it is important to leave AO-85 tracked in your FoxTelem setups, in order for us to gather telemetry and keep tabs on the situation. If you do happen to hear a Veronica beacon, or either the normal repeater or the COR/no telemetry repeater, please let the list know, or send me an email or message directly.

The following information is valid as of 2018 December 19 at 12:34 PST:

This evening's planned launch of a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Vandenberg AFB appears to be on schedule. Liftoff is slated for 5:44 p.m. PST from south Vandenberg. The most recent weather forecast called for an 80% probability of acceptable weather at launch time.

If the sky is clear, the launch could be visible over a wide area. Computer simulations by Rick Balrdridge show if the rocket is launched on time, it will climb into sunlight at high altitude during the powered portion of the launch at T+ 4 minutes 20 seconds. In other words, the rocket's exhaust plume should be illuminated by the sun with a dark sky as a background.

AO-92 about the same ease of use, but you have to know when it goes in to 1.2gHZ uplink mode (usually once a week on the weekends for 24 hours - watch AMSAT's Twitter feed for exact times).

Trying to get back on the birds after being off for over three years. (This is becoming like a broken record for me.) 
 
Carlos was kind enough to send me a current Doppler.SQF file for SatPC32, and I have that installed. While I have done some digital contacts on satellites, most of my operations will be confined to SSB/CW and FM birds. There are literally dozens of amateur satellites active now—can someone tell me which ones are the most active over the US and have good signals? 
 
Using small Arrow beams mounted on a rotor in the attic with pre-amps.

That's great. If you ever want the light to stay on, just press the F key again then the lamp button. Lamp on to long with use up battery time for your info.

Decoding ITASAT and MOVE-2

 

I'm trying to decode the telemetry data packets from the ITASAT and MOVE-2 Satellites using UZ7HO Soundmodem without success. Playing back an SDR capture of the pass, I can pull out and decode the JY1-Sat and Fox-1Cliff satellites, but both of those satellites have dedicated apps for telemetry decode. Decoding the AX.25 packets used by ITASAT and MOVE-2 is proving more difficult. I have SDRSharp playing back the recording and using USB mode with the satellite signal centered in the voice band. The audio is being played through Virtual Audio Cable that loops it back to a virtual microphone that another app can record from. This is the same setup I used for JY1-Sat except that, instead of the JY1-Sat Dashboard, it;s UZ7HO Sound modem listening on the other end. According to AMSAT UK, the ITASAT should be 1200 baud BPSK AX.25. However, I never seem to get any packets decoded on it.

A similar setup using the 9600 baud BPSK variant of UZ7HO's Sound modem was attempted for MOVE-2, but similar results. I can hear both satellites in the audio. ITASAT sounds plenty strong, though MOVE-2 might be a little weak to decode.

Any tips on decoding these satellites would be appreciated!
