I use a cheap Wal-Mart tripod. Took all the photographic assembly off it, until I was left with a round piece which fit quite well in a 1.5 inch pvc pipe. I then used a t junction, added a short arm, put a hole in it and the Arrow antenna goes in it from the middle, where it breaks down. Elevation is controlled by friction. You can get fancy and use a threaded fitting. Elevation is easier to control that way and the thing won't fall apart on you ever so often. The other side of the t junction is used to hang my rig for balance. Everything is secured to the structure, so if I drop something, it does not fall to the ground. Weight wise, it is still portable,  not for backpacking, but park bench or field day definitely.

I am looking to buy a tripod for mounting my ARROW II antenna. I had one but it was old and broke down. I would rather not spend top dollar but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

With a counterweight ... the balance problem can be solved (some use their
rig as weight hi hi)

Go in a photo store ... there sure you can find a tripod that does not cost
an arm and a leg

Too expensive?!?

Then search for the same thing on evil bay :-)

Hi

Go to youtube Randy K7AGE has a video on building a radio holder for the Arrow that also works as a counter balance.

Being a retired Land Surveyor, I have a bunch of survey tripods that I can use. They have the advantage of being very robust and quite stable. Transportable by car. I put together an articulated mount from hardware store items, for the Elk for under $20 and use it on the tripod. Being in a HOA, I also use two to string a dipole up to 20 meters.

Although not a common item they are often found at garage sales or on Craig’s list. $50 would be about right. I would prefer the wooden type as opposed to the aluminum due to stability and conductivity issues.

Photo of my design available upon request. Since my wife is my designated antenna pointer I have not adapted it for one person use but it could be easily done.

I have discussed this with the folks who make the Arrow satellite antennas, and it is not an issue as far as their antennas' performance is concerned.

Now, then, if you're working the birds during an electrical storm, that is a different matter ... (grin)

Nothing heard on the 20:30 UTC pass 9/8/12. Slight quieting for a moment. No telemetry. Does anyone know the nature of the problem.

On the positive side, SO-50 at the 05:00 pass last night only had 2 others besides myself. Was able to have an actual conversation (with the appropriate breaks for calls), I’ll be there again tonight if anyone needs grid DM26.
