Re: AO-51 Question-o-matic

K6LCS <clintbrad4d@...>

We haven't used a PL on AO-51 for about three years now. So, whatever site you saw "Use a PL for AO-51" on is not providing current info to you.

Stick with us ... (grin)

I notice a different uplink for FM QRP (no PL), should I be using this
with my FT-60 since it tops out at 5 Watts?
If you go to my site at ...

http://www.work-sat.com

... you can scroll to the bottom, and find a link to the AO-51 CONTROL OPERATOR page. THAT is the BEST-AVAILABLE information!

Here's what the CONTROL TEAM has for us ...

February 1 - February 7
--------------------
FM Repeater, V/U
Uplink: 145.920 Mhz FM
Downlink: 435.300 Mhz FM

FM Repeater, L/U (Subject to interuption for telemetry collection)
Uplink: 1268.700 Mhz FM
Downlink: 435.150 Mhz FM

February 8 - February 14
---------------------
FM Repeater, V/U
Uplink: 145.920 Mhz FM
Downlink: 435.300 Mhz FM

9k6 BBS and Telemetry
Uplink: 1268.700 Mhz FM

AO-51 Question-o-matic

CatzMeow

Good Space-Oriented-Folks,
Had a clean pass of AO-51 as I was leaving work today, so I thought I'd give it a go (my timing has been not-so-good lately and I've been stuck with 6 am passes so I haven't made much of an effort in a while).

Had some trouble lining up the signal, and never quite came in clear, but I did hear some voices and could make out calls so I tossed mine out there....nothing.  Waited for someone to inhale and put it out there again, faster this time (I'll show you fast-talkers)...nothing again.

So I figured either the other kids on the box had gills and could talk and breathe in at the same time, or my PL was off.

Got home and dumped the FT60 into Commander and pulled up the details on Amsat.  Sure enough, my PL was old so I switched it all to 67.  Here are my questions:

I notice a different uplink for FM QRP (no PL), should I be using this with my FT-60 since it tops out at 5 Watts?

It has the same downlink?  Won't we just be stepping in with all of the high-powered kids and their cooler mega-watty toys?

The AMSat summary page  for AO-51 has a different d/l for QRP (435.15) but the Echo Project Page  showed QRP and regular on the same d/l.

That's it for now, I'm sure I'll have more as I start working through my other memories.

Thanks,
Ed

... This is FUN ...
I still get a thrill working three countries on some West Coast passes (Mexico, the U.S., and Canada).

Did you see the reply to your Doppler inquiry? I added that URL to the "Links" area here - thanks for bringing that up!

HO-68 setup

k7cwq <lorenrasmussen@...>

Setup is a handheld Arrow, with a tray similar to the one in the Files section. And a Yaesu FT-60R with a handheld mic and digital recorder
(rubber banded to my wrist). Nothing fancy. Sharing the bird with the digital ops makes it very noisy. From Central Oregon I worked Michigan, Texas, Florida, South Carolina and Mexico. It was a great morning. I started working the FM birds in November. I have 28 states and 82 grids confirmed. Closing in on VUCC. This is FUN.

Great work! What was your station setup?

... is a challenge with the digital transmissions going on ...
Please describe for us what this was like!

HO-68

Had a great pass on HO-68 this am.
2-5-10 1649z.
Made 5 contacts. 2 new grids.
It is a challenge with the digital transmissions
going on simultaneously. It is still being
commissioned so you have to check the "ON" times
for FM. Well worth the effort though.

Re: doppler question

K6LCS <clintbrad4d@...>

That is an EXCELLENT question - and it comes up all the time during my presentations.

The "easy" answer: There's less of a Doppler shift on the VHF side than there is on the UHF side - so working the FM LEOs doesn't require a Doppler correction for the VHF side of things.

The "engineer's" answer: The formula for the frequency shift is df = - f * dr/dt / c where f is the transmitted frequency, and c is the speed of light, and dr/dt is the rate of change of distance vs time. The only thing to remember from this formula is that things are simply proportional. Proportional to f, and proportional to dr/dt.

A "layman's" explanation: Go to this page, and you'll be an expert in describing the Doppler phenomenon to all ...

doppler question

k7cwq <lorenrasmussen@...>

I have been using an HT with an Arrow for several months now and
using the suggested tx/rx frequencies seems to work correctly.
You have to tune through the memories to change the rx freq to allow for the doppler effect. I understand that. My question is why don't I have to adjust the tx freq? I am a believer in "if it aint broke don't try to fix it", however, curious minds want to know.

Palm Springs RATS HamFest

K6LCS <clintbrad4d@...>

Had a great time yesterday at the Desert RATS annual HamFest. Quite a crowd ... free parking ... free admission ... and we worked the 1:01PM pass of AO-27, contacting Texas, New Orleans, and Patrick in Arizona.

Fullerton Radio Club

Had a great time with the Fullerton Radio Club Wednesday night. We worked the 5:12PM pass of AO-51 in the rain ... then dried out at the Fullerton Senior Center for my sat presentation. AND there was fresh coffee and cookies for all ...

Re: Voice recorder / headset question

Thanks for the advice guys. Somewhere in the house I have a Creative Zen Micro which has a built in microphone on it. I was hoping to have something with a line in so I could use a headset, but if I can find the Zen Micro I can give it a shot and see how things go.

Thanks again and 73's

Hello,

I use a creative ZEN Stone MP3 player to record with.

Mine is 2GB and can record for many hours and the MP3 files it creates need no conversion like some digital voice recorders do. Its tiny about 1x1.5 inches charges over usb, works like a thumb drive (just mounts up like a disk so you can store photos, log data and other files on it), has a FM radio and of course can play music. The 2nd generation ZEN Stones also have a speaker built in. I got mine at target on sale for less than $20. I think they are out of production (at least the earlier models) so look around for a good deal. Oh, yeah it has a stopwatch and a clock as well. Nice little toy.

WELCOME to the group. Looks like you, too, have the infamous "sat bug" disease ...

AO-51 and SO-50 programming charts for your FT-817 are on the support Web site of ...

http://www.work-sat.com

You've got all the equipment. Just settle on one (or more) sat tracking systems - whether free online info or a software program - and get on the birds!

New to group

walscobry

Hello all,

KJ4QZJ here. Name is Bryan. I am a new ham, licensed 12/1/09. I have a Yasesu FT-817ND.

One of the reasons I decided to get my ticket was a Youtube video by Randy K7AGE working the FM sats with a arrow yagi and HT in his backyard. I thought to myself, "I really want to do that!"

I found this group via a link on K6LCS home page and am glad I did. I hope to make a arrow type yagi and take it out the park as soon as I can. Time and Weather need to cooperate with me on this.

Now I just need to read up on all the info here and get started...

I left out an entire phrase in my suggested solution: Use a little recorder "and its included microphone" and see if it works out for you.

Sorry if that was obvious ... (g)

Re: Voice recorder / headset question

K6LCS <clintbrad4d@...>

I have a rather odd question ...
Not odd at all - this is a great question!

... voice recorder to record contacts ...
Great to keep a history of the contacts ... It's hard to hold an HT and a handheld Yagi and key the mic and write it all down with just two hands ... (grin)

... using a headset so that you can hear a bit better ...
Well, the FM birds are so easy to work (especially with your Arrow II!) that I really don't desire using my Heil headset while working them. But ...

... a way to do both? ... VX7R with a external handheld microphone ...
That's a perfect combination! A little shirt-pocket-sized recorder will do the trick. You pay more for them as the features get more extravagant, of course ...

- Just need taped conversations? Cheapest. Like a Sony M-470.

-Digital recording? A little more expensive. Olympus units are great. VN-6000 looks cool.

-Digital, with audio files that are easily transferred to your computer? Closer to $100, like an Olympus Olympus WS-500M. My Marantz PMD660 for interviews + Sennheiser mic was a little over $500.

-Wireless setup (I use one for my presentations and demos)? Can be second mortgage time. Audio Technica makes some great setups.

... I was thinking of adding something like the MFJ-288R, but was curious how I might be able to record contacts?

The MFJ-288R doesn't have an audio jack inline anywhere (as I remember - correct me if I am wrong). The Pryme SPM-4xx Series used to have an 3.5mm 2-conductor audio jack - so you would plug the tape recorder's input into it, and then use the tape recorder's earphone jack for hearing ...

Go inexpensive at first. You already have the speaker-mic and great gain with the Arrow antenna. Just borrow someone's cassette recorder (or find yours out in the garage) for testing. Look at how I have mounted my HT onto the book of my Arrow (go to PHOTOS at http://www.k6lcs.com ) - and you eliminate the need for so many hands.

And after transmitting, you can clip the mic to the setup. Hey - mount a little clipboard and pad, and you have your own portable Arrow Satellite Office!
