If the mother was married at the time of registration, there is a presumption that the husband is the father of the child & he doesn't have to be present at the registration. So widowed or husband

won't find him there

What if the baby's mother had been Widowed? The Father could not be present at Registration. What date (Year) was the Baby born? Was there a War or 'Flu Epidemic' at that time.

You can use whatever name you want in England and Wales, as long as there's no fraudulent intent. For legal purposes you can also change your name by statutory declaration.

Verbal family history can be notoriously inaccurate. Most family stories
have grain of truth, though. Aunts and others were very close-mouthed, and
children would only know what they picked

After sending my earlier message I had another look on Ancestry for the BUDDEN family. I found Nelson in prison in 1914 at Mountjoy Prison in Ireland. He is shown as having stolen Chocolate and
