I've also had positive results posting to the global activation calendar at http://wwff.co. 3pm might be pretty good for some EU contacts, and a lot of folks in the EU especially seem to look for parks that have never been activated before. -detrick K4IZ

Using APRS for spotting
Detrick Merz
I learned today that the SOTA folks have a system that leverages APRS for spotting: Does anything similar exist for WWFF? I, for one, would be interested in such a system. I often find myself with a drained phone battery and a noticeable hit to my data usage when trying to activate a park. Or in a park where there's little or no cell service. I have some spare tablets that have wifi, but no data plan. I've been thinking about setting up a Raspberry Pi + Direwolf + WiFi + radio, and having APRSDriod on the tablet using Direwolf (across wifi) as a TNC. But I know of no way, currently, to send a message through the APRS network and have it converted to a WWFF spot. Of course the reverse direction would be equally useful: receiving spot data from other activators via APRS message, for those P2P contacts. 73, 44, -detrick K4IZ

Re: Parks Diverge
Dave,
I post on DX Summit and it gets picked up by SmartWWFF. Once you have been identified once on SmartWWFF, it will report RBN spots for you which is a very nice feature.

Today I spotted kc4jnw on the WWFF spotter and it hasn’t posted onto dxsummit spotter, that seems to be my experience of late. Maybe I’m formatting the spot wrong or the forwarding system is broke.

That does appear to be the case now. I do recall in the past people checking
this and saying that it does not, so things may have changed. Thanks Tom. I'm still feeding SpotCollector from 3 Telnet nodes. I don't use it on a regular basis as I prefer to use DXSummit, but WWFF spotting does drop information into the DX cluster network. Best regards, Tom, W1TEF

Re: Camping
Detrick Merz
I've tent camped and activated once. It's was a nice way to do a little radio while also hanging out with friends. Wake up early in the morning and work the radio for 2-3 hours while everyone else is asleep, it's quite serene. And then get a few more hours in in the evening after dusk while everyone is sitting around the fire. Really works up your ability to work CW in one ear and socialize with the other. Not that I'm great at that, but it is good practice. I've also brought a radio along while RV camping in parks that aren't part of the program. Still a great opportunity to do some hunting, and in my cases from locations that have nice low noise floors. Dogs make great camping and activation buddies, for sure. -detrick K4IZ

Strange how simple things can get so complex in the wink of an eye. Like Brian, I plan to activate parks and upload to both programs. I hope the relationship between the two programs remains civil so we can freely participate in both. But as time passes ham organizations tend to get a little "clickish", so I worry about the future and how it will unfold. We shall see, but I can see some future issues. Right off the bat, I plan to ID with the KFF number, so we shall see how the K hunters read that...

Here in Florida I don’t camp June, July and August and not until late September. Between the afternoon storms and the gazzillion percent humidity it is not enjoyable.

That’s exactly what Donna and I do. As we wander around, we always try to stay in State Parks. Their facilities are always a bargain. Same goes for national forest campgrounds. Nice places to be and it’s always fun To Make Nature

If you do, do you tent camp, have an RV, a pop-up? Tell us about your experience. My best experience was camping at Hillsborough River State Park and I was up at sun up, had my headphones on working on CW. I look up and no more that 20 feet from me is a deer. I didn't move and stared at her eating for at least 5 minutes.... Sam was oblivious to it. 73/44, Roger

Re: What kind of antenna?
Mark Grow
I also have used and LNR EFT-10-20-40 with the 12m Spiderbeam pole (great antenna). I have also purchased the LNR-MTR which is another great antenna but requires more real estate. My pack-in antennas are the SOTAbeams Band Hopper and the SOTAbeams Bandspringer with the Elecraft T1 tuner. The only antenna I purchased and was disappointed in was the Ventenna HFp vertical. Has just never been a good performer.

This dosen't have to be a big deal folks, activate how when and what you want. The numbers are different now but 4000+are the same minus the KFF or K. No different than doing Summits on the air or light house or islands, whatever. Upload your logs how you see fit. Changing numbers in your logs is not a big deal.
