Date

Picnic & Radios + Mini Fox Hunt

Larry Krainson - W1AST

If you plan on attending the picnic and radios on Mt. Sugarloaf on Sunday (10:30 - 2:30, free, bring a potluck food item to share, might be a $5 get on mountain admission by the state), HF rigs to try and make a contact from or learn about and a mini Fox Hunt at the top.

Bring your foxhunt gear to Sunday's Picnic & Radios. I plan on hiding a foxbox on the mountain somewhere.

Foxbox 2 will be on 147.550 with a PL of 151.3. Pressing #1 on your keypad for a moment will activate the foxbox.

Take a picture of the foxbox or one with you in it and find me (W1AST) and show me.

See you Sunday.

Fox Box 2 has returned to the den

FoxBox 2 has returned to the den for recharging.

It was located in Laurel Park in Longmeadow. Walk up and nearly drive up.

The blue dot where Faye is, is where the FB2 was located.

FB2 is waiting until the first of October to hide again.

Thank you all for hunting it!

Re: Fox Box 2 Has Escaped! It's up to you to find it!

Congrats Ryan,
Sometimes you don't need all the fancy equipment, but it does make it easier!
I wish your pic came out but it doesn't at least for me.
Hope to see you hunting in the future, FB1 will be back out after the WBZ-100 special event this weekend, 9/17 to 9/19

We must have just missed you; my son and I were successful without a proper DF antenna. Used my old Baofeng and the 1/4 wave whip to get somewhat close, followed by some 'clever' use of the antenna disconnected but (initially) held close to the socket, gradually honing in on the fox by completely distancing any antenna (save for TX of course). Regardless, it worked despite my initial doubts, though I will definitely build a DF antenna prior to doing this again...too much suspicious looking circling for my taste and was probably starting to weigh on my YL's nerves a bit hi hi; fun in the end though!

That's great that it could hear you activate it from so far away. It shows that yaesu has a much better receiver than the baofeng!

I'm wondering how far away you could trigger it? This has a Yaesu HT and different controller from FB1.

Let's see who else can find it.

FoxBox-1 has returned to the den for some much needed recharging!

FB1 is back at the den getting a full charge before its next adventure!
Congrats to Noah, N1NIS, and Derek, KC1EUM two hunters from Connecticut that were able to find this challenging fox! Tricky hunt to say the least. Wish I had a pic to share but here is a Google Maps shot showing its QTH at Community Field in Holyoke, MA. at approximately 42.20414, -72.63726 and 342 feet above sea level.
Watch for the next hunt right after the WBZ-100 year Special Event Sept. 17th - 19th. Look up WB1Z on QRZ for details.

Thanks to everyone who participated

Congrats on finding Fox Box-1 and yes being on the right side of the river does help! Larry has FB-2 out there somewhere now too.

We went up and down memorial Ave 3 or 4 times and did not hear anything, so we had to expand our search area.

It's about time we get both HCRA Fox Box's back into hiding so hunters from the HCRA (and elsewhere) are out trying to locate that diabolical fox!

HINT, I was able to wake it from its slumber with 50 watts in my mobile from a few areas along Memorial Drive (Rte.33) in Chicopee, MA.

FB1 is running one watt into an 18-inch antenna. To activate FB1 go to the 2-meter simplex frequency of 147.550 MHz (PL 100.0Hz), key your transmitter, identify yourself with your call sign then press the DTMF "1". If the Fox can hear you (and you can hear it) you will hear its very distinctive sound. It will transmit for 30 seconds, ID, and then repeat 2 more times before going back to sleep. You can make it transmit as often as necessary to locate it.

This is a good opportunity for base stations to get in on the fun. If you can hear the fox please give its signal strength and direction if possible. Please do not reveal its location, just a location where you can hear it from, this then becomes a starting point for the other fox hunters to use. It's just as important for the hunters to know where it CANNOT be heard as well as where it CAN be heard!

If you do locate the Fox Box you do not have to touch it to claim finding it. Eyeball contact is sufficient with a photo for good measure. Post a photo (not revealing its location) as there might be other hunters still out there trying to find it. It is located less than 500 feet from a safe parking location. Announce it and post the photo here on this group and the HCRA Facebook Group that you found it along with any comments other than its location. We want to know who has found it and who hasn't.

I can tell you it's in a publicly accessible location with nearby safe parking. Getting to FB-1 may require a short walk on mostly flat ground.

Please do not post the frequency or PL on social media, websites, or email lists.
Note: Larry, W1AST will be hiding FB-2 first thing on Sunday morning, so watch for his announcement.

ALL Fox Hunters are welcomed to participate regardless of affiliation!

Happy Hunting!
