Interesting! But Gary asks, by what receiver? Did people have some sort of receiver? Thanks, Jane

We should take note on this Christmas Eve about this piece of history:

On Christmas Eve in 1906, the first radio program was broadcast. Canadian-born Professor Reginald Aubrey Fessenden sent his signals from the 420-foot radio tower of the National Electric Signaling Company, at Brant Rock on the Massachusetts seacoast. Fessenden opened the program by playing "O Holy Night" on the violin. Later he recited verses from the Gospel of St. Luke, then broadcast a gramophone version of Handel's "Largo." His signal was received up to five miles away.

 I loved producing Monday at One with a series on Women in Business back in the 1977-78 time period.
Got such a kick out of Arch saying how many women owned their own businesses in Orange, "go interview a few".
Susie Bresee, Susie Miller, Pam Kirkland, etc. and before I knew it, I owned my own business, Barbara Potter and Associates Realtors...from my interviews back in the 70's.  Another thank you to Arch Harrison riding those comets through space with Meon.

I've heard from a few people who want a copy of the Alfred Burt
Monday at One program. I'll probably burn the CDs at work on Monday
or Tuesday. So, if you'd like to be included, let me know and I'll
add you to the list.

I forgot to include with my original post, that when I bought a CD
copy of the Burt songs from the Alfred Burt web site
<http://www.alfredburtcarols.com/>, I emailed a link to the Monday at
One opening on the WJMA site. When the CD came there was a nice note
from Alfred Burt's daughter. I'll send her a copy of the program, too.

Re: a final Postscript

Les Myers

 I saw the same astronomical beauty up here in Maine. Arch's final postscript is beautiful- a "keeper." His reading reminds me of the great quality of his inflection, timing and, well, writing. We don't hear a lot of that quality in the hurryupandgetallthenewsjammedinto90seconds style of newscasters, who use odd inflections all over the country, these days.

Thanks to Reid for working on this audio gem and to Ross for maintaining the Yahoo group so we can all get access to the piece.

==============================================================================

Archibald Chapman Harrison Jr.
A familiar voice of the community has gone quiet. Arch Harrison
gently passed away in Charlottesville, on Friday, November 29, 2013.

Arch was born in Richmond, in 1926. He attended Christchurch School
and later graduated from the George Washington University. During
World War II, Arch served as a radarman aboard the USS Idaho in the
Pacific Theater, and vividly recalled being part of the immense
presence of the United States Navy in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese
surrender was signed. Arch was an award-winning broadcaster and a
born teacher. After beginning his career in radio and television,
Arch moved to Orange, in 1961, as the new owner and general manager
of WJMA Radio. He stayed at the station for 23 happy and productive
years, mentoring countless members of the WJMA family.

In Orange, Arch was a faithful member of the choir and Vestry of St.
Thomas's Episcopal Church. As a Rotarian, he annually led the
community Christmas Eve Carol Sing. After moving to Charlottesville,
in 1986, Arch became a mainstay of the choir at Church of Our
Saviour. For many years he volunteered as a reader and trainer at
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. He was also an avid supporter
of Greenberry's coffee.

Music, language, and humor were among his greatest joys. Arch had an
encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and had a song for every
occasion. His humor was understated, eclectic, and waggish. His
delivery was impeccable in his distinctive, resonant baritone.

Arch is survived and missed by his four children, Chap, Mimi, Reid,
and Ann. He also leaves five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews. He has surely been welcomed in Heaven by
his parents; his sister; many old choristers and barbershop singers;
and by his dear wife, Meon (Marion Bower Harrison).

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 14,
2013, at Church of Our Saviour on Rio Road in Charlottesville. The
family will welcome friends on Friday, December 13, 2013, from 5
until 7 p.m. at St. Thomas's Episcopal Church in Orange.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of
the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300,
Charlottesville, VA 22911
