There’s still no obituary on-line, but I’ve been told there will be a memorial service for Jean at 1pm on Thursday (1/8) at St Thomas in Orange.

Thanks, Ross.  Many details I’d forgotten, some I never knew.  It seems she left good memories with many folks.  Orange had a way of attracting good folks.

She had an interesting background. Much of it is fuzzy in my memory, so what I write below may not be 100% accurate. She did teach at Grymes and Orange County High School. I'm sure she taught art and she may have taught English. She came to Orange from Philadelphia where she had been a draftsperson for AT&T. I don't recall why she came here. Her impact on the community is still being felt. She was one of the founders of The Four County Players. She's not mentioned on the FCP site, but Bill Thomas, Joe & Lillian Morse and Jean, got it started in 1973. The web site says 10 gathered to start FCP. I don't recall Jean mentioning any of the others.

She was also the designer of the Orange County Seal. Probably hundreds of people see it every day. It's on everything related to the county. She created the seal in for the Orange County Bicentennial Commission. At some point the Board of Supervisors appropriated the art work for county use. It was made the official seal in 1975. Jean had not copyrighted her art and after a legal battle, got a little compensation and acknowledgement that it was her creation.

Jean was originally from Cape Giradeau, Missouri, birthplace of Rush Limbaugh. I remember Jean telling me about some dating history between her mother and Limbaugh's father.

Jean had a cousin who worked for Jim Henson of The Muppets fame. His name was Kermit Love.

When our daughter Katharine was about 3, Jean started coming to our house on Christmas eve to have dinner and stay with Katharine while we went to Christmas Eve service. When Katharine and her sister Caroline were older Jean just came for dinner. As night driving became a chore for Jean, dinner became an afternoon tea in recent years. The tradition continued for over 30 years. This past Christmas was the first time Jean was not able to come.

We just got word that Jean Love had died. At this time it’s not clear if she died during the night Friday or Saturday. Apparently it was related to complications that developed after her broken hip. When I have more information. I’ll pass it along.

Good day- for those of us who worked early morning radio and did not have to worry whether we were in our pj's or sweatclothes, the folks in this slide show do have to be concerned about such things. This NY Times feature shows the hosts of the three major TV morning shows prepping for their day's gig.

It occurred to me this morning that it would be nice to send Jean a card. At first I thought I'd get a card, sign it, send it to another person on this list, who would sign and pass it on. But that'll take weeks to finally get to Jean. I'd be happy to start the ball rolling on that plan if that's the vote. I'd include a list of those wanting to take part along with addresses, if that's the best thing to do.

Alternatively, for more timely cards and letters, you can individually send them to:

I'm sorry to hear about Jean's mishap but I'm pleased to report that she is in very good hands at Dogwood.

For those who perhaps don't know or maybe moved away years ago, the Orange County Nursing Home became Dogwood Village several years ago. In addition to the nursing facility that has been there since roughly 1970, there is now an outstanding rehabilitative center and an assisted living facility that was built five years ago adjacent to the original building.

The entire facility is one of the best in the state. Their food service is so well ran that they actually cater for community groups who use one of the dining areas as a meeting room.

Jean Love called a few days ago to say she would not be able to attend our annual Christmas Eve get together. We've been meeting for dinner or afternoon tea for probably 30 years. This year Jean is at Dogwood Village (aka Orange County Nursing Home) for recovery and rehab from a broken hip. She fell a couple of weeks ago.

Jean Love
Dogwood Village
120 Dogwood Ln
Orange VA 22960

The front desk says they'll get to Jean.

By the by, I’m uploading the rest of the book today.  It’s quite long, mind you, but it is all there just as CD wrote it.  Also, here and there you’ll hear a small chain jingling. That’s not Tiny Jacob Marley (nor Tiny Tim), that was Tiny Schatzie, Daddy’s faithful pooch who would occasionally get up and voice his enthusiasm by shaking his collar, before settling back down at his feet and falling fast asleep.
