Ross and all-

I (finally) took a look and listen at some of the files in the Alumni
Department. I dare say, that First Virginia Bank spot ain't too shabby!
The photos are fun, especially of the old control room. What's that space
now?

I loved the memo to Russ from Arch about the lead-in music to Night Music
being somewhat inappropriate!

Picture one is taken from door to the transmitter room. The plywood
on the wall is the old window to studio A. The window to the office
is on the right.

Picture two is taken from old teletype hallway looking to the back of
the control room. You can see a bit of light from the small window on
the back wall.

Picture three is of the door to the AM transmitter. I forgot to
check, but it looks like a note from Arch is still on the transmitter
door window. The Variac is on the wall to the right of the door. The
meter still has the arrow pointing to 3.52 for the correct setting.
You did do your transmitter reading every half hour didn't you?

I don't know what the plans are for the old control room. Perhaps Joe
Boucher or John Schick can shed some light.

slogans

Ross Hunter <xhunter@...>

I don't know why, but I was thinking about the various slogans used on the air at WJMA. I know I don't remember them all, but here's a start.

The first one I remember was "Your Information Stations". Later "Radio Orange" was adopted as the official ID, but various identifiers or positioning statements were tacked on the front end. There was "Central Virginia Daily News", "America's Most Popular Music", "At the Foot of the Blue Ridge", for sports: "All The Good Sports", "Z96.7" and "Central Virginia's Hit Music FM" in the post Digby era. I think there was "Jamin' 96.7" when Carl Hurlebaus was the owner. Were you around then Cameron?

There was a slogan we adopted one summer while Arch was on vacation. It didn't last a day after his return. Remember "The Only Radio Station You'll Ever Need"? We thought it pretty well described our full service approach. Arch was firmly against it saying it was just not true. You might want to or need to listen to another station sometimes. Where did that on come from? I think "All the Good Sports" was borrowed from WBZ, Boston.

Under the current owner ship there has been "Country Mix 96". "Your Place in the Country" is the current slogan.

Let's kick this one around a while and arrive at a comprehensive list.

Would you consider having this get-together on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend?
In other news....thanks for the kind words regarding Monday at One and

Re: two new audio files

R Roberts <russroberts@...>

Ross,

Both files were good choices; wonderful radio. They were sound
paintings. Both of Audibert's pieces "showed" the stories. He didn't
just mouth words at us. Both stories illustrate what we know is true;
the business of radio should never supercede the art. The money part of
the operation will work out when you know a Picasso is more valuable
than a Polaroid. Knowing that is part of being a good radio manager.

I finally got an chance to digitize some tape Phil Audibert loaned
me. I have uploaded two files to the NEWS folder in the FILES section
of the Yahoo site. Use the link below to get there.

The first file is called "Audibert balloon". It's a good pices that
would be at home on NPR today. I recall that it won "Best Feature" in
the non-metro category in the annual Associated Press, or was it
Virginia Association of Broadcasters, competition? I really should
have posted the entire piece, but the file would be too large to make
for practical downloading on dial-up connections. The posted file is
almost 2 minutes long. The missing part is between the two songs.

The second file ("Monday At One WWII") is the opening of a "Monday At
One" program featuring local World War II vets. I think I recognize
the voices talking about their war time experiences: Joe Samuels,
Bill Thomas, Billy Trimmer, and Tommy Brown. Trimmer has one of the
great lines from Monday At One history: "Now if you've got any
straighten up with the Lawd, that's the time to start doin' it."

At the end of the piece is the "Monday At One" theme. I don't recall
the song title, but I think the group is the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Anyone else remember for sure?

Anyone recall when "Monday At One" ended it's run? How many Douglas
Southall Freeman awards did it win? Five?

I'm in. I'll make a point of being in town on that weekend.

Potluck is a good idea. As far as the games you mentioned earlier, I
will be talking and won't have time to play any games. The pleasure of
everyone's company and some good chow will make my day.

Dates, spouses, el.al. may enjoy something other that radio talk
however. There is nothing worse than watching a spouse curdle from
exposure to shop talk.

I'll bring as many portable chairs as I can muster; that way the "Out of
Towners" will have something to sit upon.

Cameron, I still pass by that big white house in Gordonsville on
occassion.
Now this reads like code to me. I wonder what significance that
house holds?

BTW, I met the JMA general manager at a recent event in
Louisa....he also is the Louisa County GOP chair.
John Schick? I didn't know he left Orange County.

Re: Thanks. Dave Blount

David Blount

Ross had it right--Dave Blount is alive and well in Charlottesville,
working as an education and local government lobbyist and consultant.

weekend get together sounds like a winner to me.

Cameron,

Dave is on the list. He gets the daily digest, so might not read you
message until tomorrow. Let me know if you'd like his email.

I forget exactly what Dave does now. It involves lobbying the General
Assembly in Richmond. He lives in or near Charlottesville.

Dave: please correct any errors.

Thanks for the kind words about my promotion here at WJFK.
Honestly, my days at WJMA/WVJZ are really the only reason I am here
now. It afforded me such a great experience and I knew from there
on that radio was my career future. Special thanks to Ralph Graves,
who was the first person ever to teach me anything at a radio
station.

Anyone know where Dave Blount, former newsguy is now?

Thanks,

Cameron
