Re: John Brooks

Len Cowherd

He was a neighbor on our street. He taught at Mary Ann's school at the end
of his career and I worked with him in scouts.

Subject: [WJMA] John Brooks

I saw an obituary in this week's Orange Review for John Brooks. He
was a weekend announcer at WJMA in 1961 and 1962. He had contacted me
at the time of the last reunion saying he would like to attend, but
would be out of the country.

The obituary follows.

John Edward Brooks, 75, of Culpeper, passed away Thursday, February
09, 2012 at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born May 9, 1936 in
Pennington Gap, VA to the late Florence and Curtis Brooks.
He was a graduate of the University of Richmond, Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary and University of Virginia where he received his
M.Ed. He served as both teacher and principal in Orange County,
beginning his career at Unionville Elementary. He managed the Holiday
Inn in Culpeper before returning to the Culpeper Education system to
spend 25 years as Elementary Supervisor and a teacher.

When his boys began scouting, this became one of his primary
interests, both in cub scouts and boy scouts, and pursued it as long
as he was able. He served on the staff of 13 Wood Badge courses and
the staff of 7 National Scout Jamborees. He received the Vigil award
of the Order of the Arrow, BSA.

Up until his death he was an active member of Culpeper Baptist
Church, teaching Sunday school and serving on The Leadership Council.
He has also served as deacon and as a member of numerous other
committees. Other activities include State Vice-President Virginia
Jaycees, Secretary of Culpeper Retired Teachers and President and
Literary Council of Culpeper.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Bessie Burrus Brooks and one
son, J. Edward Brooks, Jr. and his wife, Julia of Marlton, NJ. He is
also survived by three grandsons, Stephen, Philip and Andrew, three
sisters, Jane Brooks Phipps "Mrs. LC" of Richmond, VA, Katherine
Brooks Walters of Monroe, MI and Virginia Brooks Musick of
Tallahassee, FL.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Moore Brooks, two
brothers, J.C. and Hubert Brooks and sister, Bonnie Soncrant.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 6
to 8 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike,
Culpeper, VA.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 2 pm
at Culpeper Baptist Church with Rev. John Farrar officiating.
Reception will follow at the church for those in attendance.

Interment will be private for the family in North Pamunkey Baptist
Church Cemetery in Orange, VA at a later time.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made
to the Building Fund of Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West St.,
Culpeper, VA 22701 or to the Culpeper Hospital Foundation, 501 Sunset
Lane, Culpeper, VA 22701.

Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper is handling the arrangements.
