#HP1000 and 12992C Loader for Terminal Cartridge #HP1000
Hey guys,
as someone ever tried to boot a HP1000E/F using a 12992C loader, which is intended to load from the tape cartridge of a 264x terminal, but using a PC as source of the serial data, emulating the terminal? Achim

Achim,

I’m not sure about a PC, the terninal software would have emulate the semi-creative 2645A transfer protocols. I do know they had tapes for the HP85 which loaded through a BACI card and that loader ROM Regards,

Hi Achim Yes, this was used for diagnostic purpose on the MX series and HP264x Terminals. Later was a utility available, which emulate the CTD drives on the HP150.

Hi Stephen,
yes, I have a 12966 BACI card installed and its select code configured in the loader procedure. When I attach a PC via RS232 and realterm, it obviously tries to communicate. So far so good. Is that 2645 protocol documented somewhere? If not, I propably have to analyze the loader program, which is documented as assembler source in the 12992-90001 manual. It seems not to be so complex. From the loader doc, the transfered file should be in absolute binary format. On hpmuseum.net I found 21-MX diagnostics, RTE-IV and RTE6 as 2144 tape images. I'm not shure if this is usable. The reason why I'm doing this is, that I don't have any other means at the moment to boot a newly restored 1000E. There is neither a HPIB interface nor a matching loader ROM. I have also have a 7906 drive from the same source in still unknown state, but without controller. It's a shame, that this beautiful restored machine, which passes all diagnostics, can't be booted. The HP 2645 escape sequences are well documented. One original source is chapter 4 in the 2641A-2645A-2645S Reference Manual available from
http://www.hpmuseum.net/exhibit.php?hwdoc=240 MAME has a 2645A emulation (and should shortly have my 2641A) these days, though currently the tape devices are not emulated at the hardware level (the ROM images with the code are there though, so it *might* not be that much work to simulate the physical tape devices but I don't know if there's sufficient documentation on the behavior of the tape hardware) so that'ss not much help, though you can have a "real" 2645 to hook up to your 3000 through simulation if you like, it just won't let you read tape images through it right now.
