DSP audio processing

John Fell

Has anyone done much with add-on DSP for older generation prime movers RX such as the IC746 ?
That has an early DSP attempt but has no doubt been surpassed by most SDRs etc .
I am looking ideally for a module that would take standard LS level  from the rig , process the audio with setup options and output as a speaker level at around 2W .

I have found off the shelf boards , at a price , but was hoping for some reduction in my pension contribution ....
This is for USB audio use on the G4RFR 10GHz EME system , where it would help to more closely define and de-noise incoming SSB .

Only the BHI modules but they not cheep, but they worth the money in my opinion

Hi John,

I am disappointed with the BHI In-Line module I bought a little while ago, insofar as it does its job very well, but when coming off transmit it takes about a half second to ‘re-process’ the newly presented noise from the RX resulting in a huge crash of noise in the speaker/headphones – very uncomfortable. No amount of level tweaking will overcome this. I have not spoken to BHI yet.  I have a friend who has a XIEGU GNR-1 that does exactly the same thing.

Incidentally I still have my IC-746 from new (1998) and have always found the NR very good on 6m/2m.

I too would like a NR add-on for my IC-375 and IC-275e, been thinking about a ‘Teensy’ but thinking is all I’ve done.

Regards

Colin de G8LBS.

Thanks for your comments Colin .
Andy JNT was just on the blower and he said it was worth a play again with the 746 onboard DSP - mine had stood in the shack for several years before it was press ganged into EME use , mainly as it had CAT control for WSJT uses .
I guess an external speaker would help .......LOL.

I do have some BHI NCH headphones in my shack and they seem to work usefully .

I've got the older version of this,  https://bhi-ltd.com/products/noise-cancellation-products/pcb-modules-amplified-audio/79-nedsp1962-kbd.html, built into a speaker and not had any issues, as described by colin

I'm pretty sure my 817 has a DSP board in it that resembles one of those BHI units, I never did quite work out what it was or how to activate/deactivate it ...this might inspre me to look at it again!

Hi all,

Sota beams have various options which may be of interest to you...

I've been considering one for my 817

Hi.

There was nitPIC that uses a DSPIC dev kit...
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-happens-when-my-sleepless-nights-meets-dsp-guru-brief-malaspina

The code was open source too.  I have a copy on an old Win7 machine I keep for specific needs...

Thinking that might be viable to graft into an older Rig if needed (probably inside a tin box with RFI filtered I/O!)  I'll have to dig it out and have another play, when I'm back home.

PS:    There is also a "nitpic" Linux tool, that emulates a Microchip PIC device.
https://code.tools/man/1/nitpic/   *Very* limited capabilities at present it seems.

It turns out the one in my 817 is the Sotabeams automatic SSB/CW audio filter ... I can't say how well/unwell it works as it appears to be permanently in circuit.  It's not unpleasant by anymeans if that helps.

Thanks for link,

This https://www.sotabeams.co.uk/audio-filters-and-more/ looks good for noise reduction (especially in my IC-375/275) if I had a clue how to use it ! – getting thicker as I get older.

Thank you Gary,
I have ordered one of the units you recommended . The  noise from the audio section on the 817 is bad but didn’t really want to do the internal mod.
Will let you know what I think. It’s the digging out of weak beacons that is problematic sometimes.
