GB3MHZ on 9cm?
Anthony Coldman
Finally a weekend with the right weather, I was able to remove 6cm and
replace it with 9cm. I know it is working locally, but I was hoping to see the MHZ beacon, can someone please confirm its actually operational, BeaconSpot not had any updates since last November. I can hear the 23cm and 13cm (when its working) so hoped I hear it on 9cm. I been monitoring all afternoon and occasionally think I can hear a weak tone/CW, but not sure. I guess I will have to wait till Tuesday UKAC and hopefully try some contacts then. Regards Anthony G7LRQ IO91tq |

Good - someone else to work on 9cms ! Yes, GB3MHZ is QRV on 9cms and seems to be about the usual strength here. It's about 1kHz high of .830. Given that you're closer to the Midlands than I am, you might expect to hear GB3ZME, currently about 2kHz low of .910, and GB3OHM, which is currently about 5kHz low of .900. Fingers crossed - conditions may be "up" a bit on Tuesday. John G4ZTR -----Original Message-----

It is on, about 1.33kHz HF of the nominal 3400.830MHz. I hope to get 13cm reinstalled soon, it has been running flawlessly in my workshop for 3 weeks now, so I'm not sure why it has previously had a couple of attacks of the vapours where it goes unstable. 73 John G3XDY On 22/01/2023 16:23, Anthony Coldman via groups.io wrote:

Hi Anthony, Have you looked for GB3LPC - I'm listening to it now on 3400.935, it's in Bampton IO91FR. It did have a problem with the antenna but this has been set vertical again recently and is certainly stronger at my QTH. 73, Neil G4BRK

After I was not able to hear any beacons or make any contact during the UKAC, I spent some time yesterday investigating.
I found an issue with a relay and an intermittent connection affecting the PA. So both are now corrected, but I am still unable to hear any of the beacons ☹ Using a HackRF I am able to Rx/TX locally so think the system is working.
I was wondering if anyone who has 9cm and would normally expect to work someone in IO91tq, might be in their shack this afternoon/evening and able to try a QSO please? I will log into KST when available.
Last question are people adding LNA or doing anything special when using the SGLabs 9cm Transverter mounted at the mast head?
Apologise to those that this general message doesn’t affect.

I can be on 9cms around 7pm, if you don’t get a better offer. Judging by the reports we exchange on 13cms a contact on 9 should work well.
My transverter is also from SG Labs and I decided to add a preamp – not because it is deaf but just to make the best of what I have. I’m also using a bandpass filter in front of the preamp.
If you are using a multiband feed, are you taking measures to avoid 13cms RF affecting the 9cms system, and vice versa ?

As John says, the multiband feeds have poor isolation band to band, so don’t transmit on one band while another still has its preamp connected! Also, if the preamp has a lot of gain, it might be worth putting some attenuation between it and the transverter or the whole system might become overloaded.
These are the beacons I can hear on 9cm –
GB3LPC 3400.935 Good signal, but not far from me GB3OHM 3400.900 Close to the noise floor GB3ZME 3400.910 Good signal GB3MHZ 3400.8300 occasionally as it comes above the noise, probably via an aircraft.
I’ll probably be in the shack this afternoon – writing the monthly club newsletter!

Well I had a unsuccessful attempt with Mike (thanks for trying) yesterday but then managed to have a contact with G4ODA who is further way than Mike, very strange, but noted ODA was running twice as much power as me and hearing me better than I could hear him at times, So my RX still needs some work, so a couple questions and possible help please?
Do others find they need to use a filter on 9cm? I have one currently fitted but the insertion loss is less that 1db so don’t think that could be causing the poor RX, but will try without it at the weekend to check. And do you use a LNA and if so which one? My system is mast mounted and has about 1.5m of cable from the dish feed to the box.
I am aware of the issues from having a multiband feed, I have a system in place that puts all the bands Relays in to TX when one is required to protect the RX but thanks for the reminder.
Thanks again for all the help and forum bandwidth, I will eventually get this system working.

I don’t currently have a filter before the preamp but at the moment the PA and preamp are in a box in the shack with about 6dB loss to the dish. It was designed for this box to go on the tower thus removing at least 5dB loss, but it hasn’t made it there yet. I might need a filter then, but time will tell. The preamp is one of Sam’s (as they all are on 70/23/13) so we’re taking probably sub 1dB NF. I run 10W from the PA on 9 and so was surprised that we couldn’t hear each other, but you heard Keith, so that’s a puzzle. As I said I could hear the 3 beacons (LPC, OHM and ZME) OK but not MHZ but that is normal, the latter pops out of the noise when it feels like it.
Good luck with and I’ll be happy to test again when you find the problem.
