Are you able to send SSB, I have never heard it via the moon so would be interested in trying to hear you. I will be around to try Q65 as well Hope to work you soon Best 73 Denis G0OLX On 30 Nov 2022, at 19:02, John Fell <john.g0api@...> wrote:

Yes, we can send SSB... Come up on HB9Q, and we will be glad to oblige - perhaps after a Q65 contact first? It will not be very loud on your 1.2m dish - at -8dB it will be around 2dB S/N in about 250Hz. Our CW should be audible though... Anyway, we can try CW and SSB... If we try fairly early on - about 1630/1700ish, the doppler spreading should be less... 73, Julian, G3YGF On 30/11/2022 19:35, Denis Stanton

Hi Denis , We can send any mode you want , but I would doubt you will make much ssb out . Email us on Saturday when we are on and we will do some tests with you ."Halo the Moon" is a favourite of mine . 73 John G0API On Wed, 30 Nov 2022 at 19:35, Denis Stanton G0OLX <Stantondenis@...> wrote:

No! There is Doppler Spreading as well. The leading edge and the trailing edges of the moon are in different orbits and have different Doppler shifts. Imagine a train going by you. You have a negative Doppler off the engine, and a positive Doppler off the last car. It is part of that 800 Hz of bell curve distribution of noise you get back from a 10 GHz EME return. WA7CJO and I did FFTs of 10 GHz EME echoes over 30 years ago. (Yes, FFT's were a bit harder to do back then!) Kent WA5VJB/G8EMY (8 with a Full License)

Hi John GOOD LUCK! Even with strong signals the spreading is pretty hard on the audio! Best luck with WA7CJO was when he pointed the dish a bit off to the side of the moon. Illuminate about 1/2 of the moon and you get about 1/2 of the spreading. And of course you need strong signals since you are only getting about 1/2 of the energy. Years ago they put that big dish in Canada on 3 cm EME and their SSB was OK. Of curse they only illuminated 2% or 3% of the moon. Cheers Kent

Hi Kent, Jim , WA7CJO , was our (G4RFR) first 10GHz EME contact in the US back in 1994 and we had the pleasure of meeting him when he came over to the UK with Ian G3SEK .We know where his 300W tube came from ........We were his 2nd UK contact (after Charlie ) .Pic below . It was his "Halo the Moon" on ssb that added inspiration to our EME activity . As you say the surface de-polarisation , Doppler and Libration all help to make returns "somewhat blurred" on speech . ....LOL . I find that a short whistle , stepping down in frequency , is the best MIC mode . My memory of the VE "large dish" operation in the 1990s was their signal being noticeably "cleaner" on CW , but not too loud .I think they were running 20W ish , so that would explain it as their beamwidth would allow a far smaller reflection area than a near full face return . 73 John G0API On Wed, 30 Nov 2022 at 22:32, KENT BRITAIN <WA5VJB@...> wrote:
