The man in brown from UPS

For anyone else who is eagerly awaiting...
Digikey shipped me some parts on 15th Nov via UPS. Tracking morphed from "scanned into Castle Donnington" to " on the way" via a couple of "it'll be with you today" into "other". No delivery. On 22nd I phoned Digikey and a very helpful lady dug into the sorry story. She told me UPS have had major problems at C Donnington but had just emailed Digikey to say it is now sorted. As of 0900UTC 23 Nov I've had no notification from UPS that a delivery is happening. The tracking I can see still shows "Other" Chris G3WIE |

Hi Chris,
Bad luck! I use UPS regularly and their service is normally quite reliable. Since Brexit they have struggled in a way that, for example, DHL and Fedex have not struggled. Some months ago a PCB which I had urgently ordered from Germany went off-radar. Eventually they admitted it had been lost and the supplier had to make a replacement. However, a PCB which I needed in 5 days actually took more than 5 weeks to come. However, this is the first lost parcel I had with them in some hundreds over many years. I suspect your parcel has been lost. Hope it turns out OK. 73, Paul |

I very much doubt it will have been lost. What UPS (and others) tend to do is when something is late, they know they have potentially incurred a financial penalty (shippers can claim back the shipping fee if it doesn't make the guaranteed date) then they simply push it to one side and prioritise the stuff they can get out on time. They then get onto the delayed stuff at weekend or when they have a slack period. I had an order in this week to complete my 24GHz transverter from Farnell ... the majority of the items arrived next day from Leeds on UPS, 2 items (a pot and a screw terminal) shipped from Belgium on Monday .. and normally come into Donnington if they go that route. They appear to be stuck, in Lummen, Belgium with no sign of life. I suspect they are screwed by the same problem. My guess would be that the Royal Mail strikes have caused a displacement of stuff onto other carriers and they are struggling to cope with the surge in volume. That was my experience also, from shipping over 2000 Triode and Tetrode Boards and kits, the vast majority outside of the UK. Delays were almost always at the point of entry to the destination country, and it was exactly as Robin says: if the receiving facility is being overrun, lower priority items go into a 'buffer stack'. The first sack of mail to be thrown against the wall will then remain at the bottom of the pile until all the later arrivals have been processed. The result is that if items fail to arrive in normal good time, the delay is then likely to be a long one. 73 from Ian GM3SEK |

To be fair, we ship audio amplifiers all over the world and UPS have been awesome, we find that if we use electronic customs data, it just flies through. It's only if for some reason we have to use 3 paper invoices manually attached to the package that it gets messy. Anyway for a bit of actual radio content .. after a massive search and rescue operation, I have now located my Arduino ICSP programmer, so can have a bash at programming the interface board for the 24GHz transverter that Maarten designed ... it seems like about a year since I have actually had a chance to play radio, where did all the time go? have a picture of a TWT to amuse yourselves with ... From what others have written here, it seems you can't take my delivery as a sign your package will arrive any time soon. Chris G3WIE |
