I used a metal book support to do the same some years ago in JO55KR.
It must be down to some flaw in the GPRS protocol.
My personal suspicion is that it happens when the operators use too
large

rigth , I am using usb cable on my GPRS system , and the phone must
always been plugged in the same usb port ; or U must install on all
ports.... After 50th birthday , the pb is to remember

Ok, I will add a warning. I guess it is because all USB controllers
will install their own Windows modem. Never had the issue myself, as I
use Bluetooth to connect to my GPRS phone.
