With just a sniff of injection locking, the phase noise isn't degraded much, but as the level rises, you end up with the same phase noise as the 4351, and on 10GHz, that is only just about acceptable.  On mine, the PN degraded by over 20dB at +- 10kHz compared with the drifty xtal and heater alone.  I now inject into the final multiplier at 2556MHz on 10G and similar frequencies for 6 and 9cm.  It matters because I have a number of local 3cm ops who have crushingly-huge signals and my LO noise was high enough for them to pump my noise floor on receive and  for me to annoy them on transmit. It seems to be OK now at 2556MHz, but I can see room for improvement.

Tony G8DMU is using an injection-locked LO in his 5.7GHz Kuhne and it has significantly better phase noise than my identical unit using direct synth injection at LO/2.

Like Geoff, I inject my G2 3cm direct into the cct in place of the crystal (via 1nF cap)  at 106.5MHz (mine if from a G4HUP DFS)
 
Cant recall the level  but I would guess about 0dBm as that is what the HUP source delivers

a 10 MHz doube ovened OCXO. Why bother with the xtal?

Hi Howard, I put a 4.7k resistor and 100pF cap in series from the xtal to the pad.  If the thing is already fairly stable and close to freq on the low side, an even larger resistor is OK.

Interesting, thanks Ian. It's amazing what's available ready made on the www and Ebay.  I quite like the idea of an LCD display showing voltage etc, but I may just walk on this build rather than run. My last amp was a HF 3-500 so I need to think.

I run a PE1RKI off a similar industrial PSU, I built the unit for the contest group.

Consider the option of using a separate feeder for RX, powering the preamp and mast head relay via the RX feeder. This will minimise the loss on TX (no output relay needed in the power amp, and no bias tee in the TX feeder. A dB or so loss in the low power bias-tee in the RX feed is probably insignificant.

Or depending on your amplifier switching, put the bias tee on the input side of the amplifier, or in the amplifier bypass leg of the switching...

Update.  I have bought a PE1RKI 150w amp unit from a UK amateur.  Not quite the ready to run option, but closer than I was. I've got relays and a case already.  Now I obviously need a 28v 11amp plus PSU and sequencer, If I can I'll try and add a bias T for my mast head preamp.

The default setting "Reg 1 Test entry" will create you and .EDI file which then can be uploaded to the RSGB entry page to submit an entry forr the contest.
