With my (old) Nexus-5 the compass works very well, as long as I don't use a protective case which has magnets in it to automatically switch the device on when the cover is opened, or to latch the cover shut...!

Tumbling the phone around each axis before trying to take a bearing helps to calibrate the sensor.

You can't use GPS to get bearing, unless you actually move the sensor.   There is nothing in the GPS signal or system that can give bearing, only exact location.   You have to work out bearing from change of location

Hi Andy & Dave,
I've just downloaded a free compass app for the Android operating system. It seemed to take a while to settle but does point in the right direction eventually. My conventional compass settles quite quickly and is much steadier. The app compass hunts plus and minus one degree all the time ( compass resting on the table, not hand held). Both instruments agree with my perception of where North is from previous observations of the Pole Star from this location. There was nothing before or after the download that said anything about calibration.

it is free I believe. As far as everything else is concerned regarding
amateur radio I use a Windows laptop
as I have found that it is so easy with Windows but a real bind with
Apple programs that are quite complicated and difficult to get them to

Hello ,

You can set up two windows , the top one is the general traffic activity and the second one is only directed at you

So you do not loose the information when its busy, but nationality does not enter into this one bit hi

Check the Setup in the tools you will see the option to have “Chat 2” enabled put “filtered” as your preference.

Regarding the original question from John – I don’t think that KST2ME lets you change your locator but easy to do from ON4KST web interface, maybe that’s the reason?

Just happening to be in KST2ME for something else - yes there is a menu option (Commands - Change own locator) to allow you to change it.  It’s pretty easy :-)

I seem to remember that about  a year or two back my KST2ME failed to load at startup properly. I found that the fix was to update the program from the help tab. The current version is V1.2.0.0. dated 31/8/2017

It is possible that the version that Adrian has installed is older and no longer functions.

Adrian, forgive me if this is totally wrong info but I believe KST2ME changed servers some time back (and also updated the program over time).

If you haven’t used the program for some considerable time it might be it is looking in the wrong place on the web?

Try updating the program on the PC you know used to work (the one where you had the original key) and see if it connects.

 

Guess you can semi-check that by looking at what version number the program shows compared to the one you just downloaded?

 

Bo would have sent your key via email so if you can find that you can put the key on the new PC, should still be valid. Alternatively look for it on your old PC in the folder holding KST2ME (guess your key would be KSTMe_G4UVZ.key). Just copy that over to the KST2ME folder on your new PC and it should work…….

 

Regarding the original question from John – I don’t think that KST2ME lets you change your locator but easy to do from ON4KST web interface, maybe that’s the reason?

 

Wasn’t thinking of making contests harder by any means but I do think there should be some form of (simple) unique exchange required that is altered by band and contest. Seems to me there is far too much reliance on databases and freely available info in advance of a QSO!

Nothing against setting up skeds to create activity (and even spotting them on the Cluster so others are aware!) but make it a real QSO please…..

KST2ME is written by Bo OZ2M.  The reg key is just so he can keep tabs on how many people are using his program.  Nothing to do with ON4KST other than using that as a back-end server.

As Bo says, the key is there for his amusement only.  Small price to pay for a neat bit of code. If you've lost the original key and it won't issue a new one, drop him an email

I had a bit of a mess about with the Apple devkit for apps on my Mac, but I wasn't fired up enough to go to the trouble of coding something up in Xcode/Swift, and now I only have an Android phone after breaking my ipad screen for the last time.
