Christopher Bartram <cbartram@...>

Hello Francois

Yes. HC35/U is the 'official' US military designation of the can. Generally, people in the UK, particularly radioamateurs, tend to call that package 'TO-5'.

I know KVG and Euroquartz, of course: I've dealt with a large number of crystal manufacturers internationally, although it has been about 10years since I ordered a custom crystal professionally, as most of the things I have designed recently have used some form of frequency synthesis. One of the major reasons for that, apart from flexibility, is that the costs of decent crystals have risen dramatically, and availability has fallen.

One of my main reasons for asking here if anybody has a suitable crystal is that I don't want to spend well over 100euros on a good custom crystal which may only be used for a few months in a temporary beacon which will then be replaced by a current technology synthesised unit. The other reason is that an older crystal, which has possibly been used for several years, should have much better ageing than a new unit.

As you say, it's likely to be a difficult search. If somebody does have a suitable crystal, I'll go ahead and modify the brick I have here. It will make a useful spare for our network once the new design is finished. Otherwise I'll continue with my development.

On the off-chance, does anyone have a ~96.008MHz, 60degree, HC18-type package crystal mouldering in their junk-box? I'm currently designing a new-generation beacon transmitter, initially for 10GHz, for the reincarnation of GB3RPE (and probably GB3KBQ, but realistically that won't be ready for some months, although I have made a proof of principle prototype of the 10GHz cavity VCO, which has extremely encouraging performance.

As a backstop, I'm putting together a temporary FSK beacon made from bits of an old transverter. The LO of the transverter uses a phase-locked brick, hence my request. A used crystal would be very acceptable, as it will probably mean that it's initial ageing will be long past, and it will be ready for service very quickly, should Ofcom (or more likely the PU ...) decide to drop a bombshell and allow the NoV before I'm finished with the new design.

My home QTH IO91un, very poor for 10GHz.  I can only hear GB3SEE!

I'll be generous and assume either you were doing the 1.3GHz AC event  or were out in the garden relaxing with a barbecue and drinks after that one day of lethally hot weather we've just had.

But still think I'll concentrate on LF - there, a lot more people listen out for transmissions all the time.  And nowadays there is even operation in summer, normally considered a poor time of year for LF operation due to noise levels  - seems it isn't, after all.

GM6BIG 10GHz test beacon 10368.500

David GM6BIG

Hi All,

Possibility of some antenna work today, around 1700-1800, Wx dependant.
So a short interruption to the beacon around then.

Its on pretty much 24/7 at the moment, including the weekend.

Reports to Beaconspot and direct to gm6big@....

Cheers, David GM6BIG

Hi All,

I have an attended beacon running on test on 10368.500.
it wont be on quite 24/7, but will be on much of the day for a few weeks.

Its located near Salsburgh, between Glasgow and Edinburgh and has a fairly good 360 deg horizon.

It is GPS locked and will send an "L" after the call if its inlock.
It will also send an "F" if the fan is running.

Its not quite ready for the big time yet, and needs some more work.
But, I wont have the opportunity to work on it for a while, so figured it best to put it on and get some feedback.

Am interested in coverage reports of course and what you think of the tones.
It should have better coverage than CSB...

Please email the via the reflector or direct to me at gm6big@...

Cheers, DAvid GM6BIG

One thing that makes them seem bright; the rods in the eye (responsible for night time vision) are very sensitive to blue, so off bore-sight, blue light will always stand out in the presence of other colours.   It's no coincidence blue lights are used on emergency vehicles.

One small issue for me was using the option of an external LED, on inspecting the circuit, a current a limiting resistor of 10k was on the board ( not enough to drive a conventional LED). As I had loads of "normal" leds ( not low volt versions) .. I decided to change the 10k resistor (R9) for a more suitable value.. I checked the PIC pin had enough drive, no problem,  I choose a value of    2k2 for 9/10ma of current.
3.3v -1.2v(LED volt drop) = 2.1v/10mA = 2100R,  2k2 selected.  It all works well, nice and bright... before I did the mod I checked what the original circuit would do...I could hardly see the led was on...certainly not in bright sunlight..no good for me...I guess overall current drawn has gone up but is so small as not to be an issue.

Sorry Andy but early start tomorrow prevents me from looking tonight but if your about Thursday find a spot and point towards France as Andy is about and at least three stations UK side see the thread on the Yahoo forum for more details. On a side note hope to have full tx/rx for JT tomorrow if last component turns up.

Hello again,

I wonder if we should leave the test until a little later in the week when Ed can be qrv....l worked Ralph today just to test the kit was ok...He was 59+ and l around 57 from IN88AQ. ....He said it might be better to wait until 4pm or so when the temp has cooled off a bit though it should be a bit cooler anyway....

What about 4pm (3pm) on Thursday or Friday if that suits....let me know any other times might be better for you.. l could be qrv pretty quickly if required and l am about..

Regrettably Weds is the only day this week I can't make, tied up in a meeting in Southampton all day. For info there was all the visual signs of a super-refraction duct out in the Channel this afternoon. Also, the weather will change overnight Tuesday into Wednesday to much cooler air so little chance of surface ducts after that.

Yep you've picked a week of good weather Wednesday is good for me, have to be somewhere in the morning but should be done by lunch so will head straight over to lane end

Hi there,

Have arrived in the Roscoff area and am staying for a week in St Pol de.Leon just to the south...wx looks extremely warm tomorrow so thinking Wednesday around 13-1500local...local time here is 1 hour ahead...

I can use my phone for calls and data so l can easily phone or attempt to get on KST...l will be using 10368.120...cw possible also

Kit is only around 1.75w to a flatflat panel antenna of around 20db...

Hopefully l haven't forgotten anything..

If Wednesday doesn't suit l may be able to make time on another occasion. .

Locator should be about IN88AQ but that may change if l can't get a parking space hi.

Thursday works best for me. Let me know what time you will be on and I can go to Abbotsbury Hill. Ideal for cross-channel work but not so good to East.

I was surprised at the 10k and then equally surprised that my brand new Ebay 5mm blue LEDs worked a treat !

Hi Kevin,
Hopefully If I add to the list of those who have modified their DB6TN 10ghz Transverter, it will inspire you a little more to go ahead and try.....
My modifications were very similar to Geoff's...I too have photos. if you think that will help please ask..

It all works well, nice and bright... before I did the mod I checked what the original circuit would do...I could hardly see the led was on...certainly not in bright sunlight..no good for me...I guess overall current drawn has gone up but is so small as not to be an issue.

hope this helps,

cheers,
