Hi everyone. This is completely off topic but I hope I am forgiven. I had an accident yesterday with my AVO / Megger M2007 digital multimeter. I have had it for years and it's an old friend it deserves better!

Very similar good conditions here in IO94 yesterday but a VERY sharp cut off of signals between 7:15PM and 7:30PM where GB3VHF,PI7QHN,DB0VC all disappeared within minutes of each other and never returned, quite amazing how quick the drop was, never seen anything like that before.

I guess 100W is not enough on 23cm these days as i never got any replies to CQ's yesterday despite hearing PA/DL/LA and GB3MHL at very good strengths.
Fingers crossed for some Extreme tropo to wake everyone up soon!

some stations. Unfortunately nothing here - as most times.
You definitly should come on 23cm and 13cm. Sometime it
will work and we can make contacts. Unil today did not work
GM on 70cm - but have no antennas up for years now.

November 23cm UKAC - Report

The fluctuation in numbers entering either the 70cm and following weeks 23cm UKACs this year has been quite similar and noting November produced a year topping 99 logs on 70cm, the 23cm event last Tuesday did not dissapoint with above average participation.
I managed to make 38 contacts which equalled a previous highest count made earlier in the year and would have been surpassed had conditions not been against me the longer the contest went on.
The tropo duct enjoyed by those on the east coast and further south did not extend to the west of Scotland, if anything, there appeared to be a weather front obstruction to working anything to the east after the first hour.
Things started well enough with big signals from G8PNN (IO95), G0MJW (IO91), G4EAT and G8XIR (JO01) and G3PYE/P (JO02).
ODX was an aircraft reflection contact with Kjeld OZ1FF (JO45) at 782Km and whose signal peaked 579 with me and 59+ with nearby GM0USI/P (IO76) who was well placed to tailend.
Not being aware that problems would occur to the eastern side of the UK later, I was quite content to concentrate with an above average number to work on the western side and midlands.
This included a few pile-ups both on SSB and CW which is certainly not a typical experience on 1.3GHz! 
Inevitably there were a number of gotaways or low powered stations I just couldn't pull through this time unfortunately.
It later became obvious I was missing a number of reachable square multipliers like IO93, 94, 86, 87. Despite attempts with G8EOP & G8GXP (IO93), G0EHV/P (IO94) and GM3UAG (IO87), nothing was heard either end.
The end result was a final 45 minutes of concerted effort producing just one contact. This was with Ian at G8OHM with a superb serial number of 61 and an impressive ODX of 1,067Km via tropo to SM6HYG.
Ian has soundly surpassed his previous "55" highest QSO number made earlier this year by a substantial margin. Well done!
From what I observed there were at least 14 GMs active during the 23cm UKAC.
With less than 2 full days gone, logs submitted so far are just 10 short of equalling the current highest number of 47 for the 2011 session.
All in all, a very positive position with one month remaining in this contests calendar and identifying growth of interest in particular from those with much experience on 2m/70cm moving up in frequency.

Dear Colin,

I had exactly this problem with my 290 which I use as an IF radio for microwaves. When the set was cold (when out /P in GM!) the S-meter would "pin" and the the ALC would cut in full on Tx. I first supected caps leaking but found that it was more subtle. It was a bit of dodgey design by Yaesu!.

The problem lies at the base of Q1014 which amplifies the output of the AGC/ALC rectifier diodes. There is no bias resistor on the base of taht transistor and it depends on the leakage of the diodes to keep the transistor turned off on the absence of signal. The solution I found was to add a 47k resistor between the base and emmitter of Q1014. Presumably when the diodes are cold they are less leaky in reverse and the base charges up turning it on. My set has been fine since doing this and has been tested overnight in the refidgerator. It is most easily done adding an SMD resistor on the track side of the PCB. It also is a low risk fix to the PCB.

G3LLL first described this mod a in a PW article in August 2007. I have a scan of the original article and I think it is in the files section of this group if you search for it.

Hi all,

The penultimate 23cm UK Activity Contest of 2011 takes place tomorrow evening, Tuesday 15th between 8pm and 10.30pm.
Last weeks 432MHz event has so far generated 90 entries, the 3rd highest this year. It is interesting to note that the 23cm events have followed a very similar fluctuation in numbers so hopefully we'll so no difference this month and hence a bumper level of participation on 23cm.

The good conditions experienced predominantly in the south east on 23cm to OZ, SM, LY, SP and DL the past number of days appears to be including other areas of the UK gradually and hopefully this will continue Tuesday.
It could make for a very interesting evening with some very good DX to be worked yet always mindful of the need to pick up the UK square multipliers as well.

The current dry spell (rare in Scotland this year!) may produce a last flurry of portable stations. Alan GM0USI is 90% sure of activating IO76XA running 30w to a 1.5m dish + LNA and will be in massive demand if he gets into a duct.
I will be active from home running 150w to 4x44 + LNA and available on KST for schedules.

May your log pages be bursting at the seams :-)

likely probelm. I have changed a few 10mfd electrolytics already, some
were visibly leaking others had a v.high ESR. Will have another look
before I write it off.

Hi Colin,
I have the same problem. I tend to believe that the Electrolytic Capacitors in the AGC / ALC  are not good. I did try to replace them but I made the mistake and not used low ESR type. The problem with the TX is More or less cleared but on RX still does it. I believe that electrolyte leaked into the PCB, Which Looks like pressed cardboard, and again the problem on RX. Mine usually clears in 20Mins or less. But in Summer the problem is much less pronounced.

What I do now, and this is not a cure, I is I try to leave it on for a couple of hours every day.

I am not familiar with this fault but looking at the circuit diagram I would suspect the -6.8 volt supply. If this is low or zero volts it could cause the symptoms you describe. The most likely culprits are C14 and C15 going leaky. This is a common problem with 7660 DC-DC convertors.

This is a common fault and the only cure I have seen is to remove Q1014 which kills the AGC. Not a good fix.
