FB Paul,
When you said you were getting 2db Sun noise off the small dish I thought you should be well inside the possible zone for the bird. Did NASA QSL the data or did you have to keep monitoring in hope . Whatever -well done OM. (hope the polythene bag keeps the rain out of the front end!!) Best 73 G0API

I'm now looking at the Sony one.....Which handles PDF's IIRC. It's on my fantasy Christmas present list! However, it seems to me that electronic books have a couple of intrinsic problems. Firstly, they are only really useful away from a computer. Perhaps it's me, but when I read text books I often have two or three open, so that I can cross-refer. Also, E-books suffer from a similar problem to the real thing: they are too small and easily left on public transport etc. I don't really mind loosing a ten quid paperback, but I'd start to grieve if I left a UKP200 e-book on the train! Given current prices, I wonder if a netbook mightn't be a better solution... Enough displacement activity - back to the VAT! Vy 73 Chris GW4DGU

I've also been looking at that. My concern with the Kindle is that the transfer mechanism isn't under our control- you have to email Amazon to get pdf's transferred. I'm now looking at the Sony one..... David G6GXK Joe McElvenney wrote:

OT: Anyone out there used a 'Kindle'?
Joe McElvenney <ximac@...>
Hi,
I've got a pile of textbooks in pdf format and it would be lovely to have them in a convenient form such as on an Amazon 'Kindle' or perhaps the Sony equivalent. The question is, how well do these things handle schematics, graphics or maths? What are they like to use in general; as touchy-feely as a paperback? Of course they are way over-priced but Christmas is only eight months away. A time when I can buy myself a present without feeling guilty should folks say, "That's nice. How much was it?". "Two hundred quid! You must have more money than sense", - a sentiment I can't generally argue with. The lack of sense, that is, but not the surfeit of money part. Cheers - Joe G3LLV

Hi Bob..

Just read your email... sorry for the delay in replying. I've only just realised that it is the 10Ghz Trophy contest on Saturday and the UKuG 24/47/76GHz contest on Sunday. As I can't really justify giving up the whole weekend to microwaves I think I'll go out on the Sunday but maybe take a reduced size 10GHz system (ie 60cm dish instead of 1.2m) out as well foir othe lads in the IARU contest.... Most likely Merryton Low IO93AD plus other Peak District "rover" locations according to millimetre band activity. I will of course try to get to a suitable location to work GD0EMG on 24GHz. 73 Peter G3PHO Robert Price wrote:

Desynn sender??
Alan Melia
Hi all I am on the "scounge" again. If you are under bus-pass holder age you
will be muttering what the h..... is a desynn. These were much used in WWII and soon afterwards as sensors and where often part of position indicating systems. I had a pair (sensor and indicator, acquired whilst I was at Uni and never used, but I gave them away (I dont think the receipient used them either !) The Desynn is the DC version of the better known AC activated Selsyn which is used in a lot of antenna rotators and indicators......and uses multiple phases to drive an indicator.....often just called a "servo" because the units are "motor generators" and beefy enough to drive as well as just indicate. The desynn sender is a circular wirewound (potentiometer like) track tapped at the 120 degree points and activated by two wipers at 180 degrees apart on the track, usually via a standard 1/4 inch (6.35mm for the youngsters) spindle . A DC voltage (24 volts usually) is put across the wipers and the signals at the taps are fed down three wires to three coils in the indicator connected in star configuration which drive a pointer to repeat the position and movement of the wiper-spindle on the sender. So you know exactly where your 15inch guns are pointing before you gently squeeze the trigger ....er was that Bismark ?? I have unearthed another indicator but would very much like to get another sensor or sender unit. If you have one of these unusual things sitting around lonely in you junk box I would be happy to put it to use, and allow it to enjoy a happy and useful retirement (like me !!) I dont mind if you dont have the long obsolete circular multiway connector that the interconnection wires used to be fed through. Alan G3NYK
