Spend an afternoon at the New York Botanical Garden and youll forget youre in the Bronx.

.

Its a piece of the wilderness right in the middle of New York City, Todd Forrest, vice president of horticulture and editor of The New York Botanical Garden, said to amNewYork during a tour of the grounds.

.

That piece of wilderness hes referring to is actually a 50-acre forest, virtually untouched since the gardens founding in 1891. A national historical landmark, it also encompasses 50 specialty gardens, the largest plant library in the world, historical buildings and a portion of the Bronx River.

.

For the gardens 125th anniversary, amNewYork uncovers the secrets blooming in its flowers and hiding in its trees.

.

The Garden has a royal sister in England
In 1888, Nathaniel Lord Britton and his wife, Elizabeth Knight Britton, visited the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London. Mesmerized by Kew's beauty, the couple was inspired to recreate the garden in their hometown, New York.

.

To this day, many similarities remain between the New York Botanical Garden and Kew. Aside from both being in the hearts of major cities, the famous Palm House at Kew, above, left, was also imitated in the structural construction of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory in New York, Forrest said.

St. Johns County Horticulture Agent's Removal Raises Questions

Supporters of Keith Fuller, the former horticulture extension agent for St. Johns County removed from his post last year by the University of Florida, say his ousting is indicative of problems greater than personnel spats at the countys Agricultural Center and symptomatic of the universitys power on the countys dime.

.

Fuller, who has also been an unpaid columnist for The Record for three decades, was given notice by UF of the non-renewal of his annual contract on Aug. 4, 2015. What ensued has become a nearly yearlong fight to regain his job, aided by Agricultural Center volunteers loyal to Fuller, against a backdrop of questions raised about St. Johns Countys memorandum of understanding with UF for extension services.

.

The terms of that memorandum, approved by the Board of County Commissioners in June 2014, changed the status of Fuller and others at the Agricultural Center from long-standing county workers to non-tenured and non-permanent employees of UF.

.

Meanwhile, the county continued to pay 100 percent of Fullers salary and benefits, as well as those of several other former county employees. According to county documents, Fullers salary for the 2015 fiscal year was $51,594.71 plus $14,343.33 in pooled fringe benefits.

.

Of the 12 extension positions identified in the countys projected payroll budget for the 2015 fiscal year, eight were paid 100 percent by the county, three were paid 60 percent by the state and 40 percent by the county, and one was paid 20 percent by the state and 80 percent by the county.

.

The countys reimbursement to UF for salaries and benefits for the 2015 fiscal year was $501,478 but budgeted at $582,715. Budgeted for the 2016 fiscal year was $600,200, which has again been requested for the 2017 fiscal year, according to this years Administrators Budget Workbook.

.

snip

.

Supporters of Fuller say whats been lost since his departure is a county voice in a leadership position at the Agricultural Center in exchange for several voices from the universitys headquarters in Gainesville calling for volunteers to put the matter to rest and move on.

.

Fuller told The Record in April that he and other employees were not aware of the full ramifications of the memorandum until a meeting with UF human resources staff after it was signed.

.

snip

.

Florida is an employment-at-will state, meaning an employee can be dismissed by an employer for any reason without having to establish just cause for termination and without warning.

.

snip

.

Momol signed Fullers last annual performance appraisal, dated Feb. 5, 2015, in which Fuller was given a commendable overall rating.

.

Comments accompanying Fullers exemplary performance in delivery/contacts read: Number of local programs and clientele contacts are admirable. Teaching skills are top notch and agent relates well to his audience. However, comments for his improvement required performance in communication and reporting skills read: A professional tone of voice with faculty, staff and volunteers is required at all times. We will appreciate your attention to this area in 2015.

.

Additional comments, lacking in Fullers three previous appraisals, said Fuller puts an extreme amount of effort into his extension programs and provides knowledge and skills that are respected throughout the community.

.

Fuller was given an exemplary rating in each of his three previous appraisals, all of which were signed by Momol.

.

snip

.

Fullers supporters say the county and UF are not abiding by Florida Statute 1004.37, dealing with county extension programs.

.

As written in Florida Statute 1004.37: Boards of county commissioners or other legally constituted governing bodies will approve or disapprove of persons recommended for extension positions in the county.

.

.

In a May 24 letter from Master Gardener Nana Royer to Jim DeValerio, interim horticultural agent for St. Johns County, she said UFs statements on the Fuller situation havent helped volunteers make sense of confusing changes at the Agricultural Center over the past year.

.

I do not agree it is okay to simply stand aside, pretend all is well and let a wrong (Fullers dismissal) go unrighted, she wrote. To move forward, as you have suggested, would require that I stand on the shoulders of the bullying, the lies, and the disrespectful censorship by the UF/IFAS administration, as well as the inaction of the St. Johns County Commissioners.

.

She closed her letter with notice of her resignation as a UF/IFAS Master Gardener volunteer.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) describes itself as the largest membership association of state legislators, but over 98% of its revenue comes from sources other than legislative dues, primarily from corporations and corporate foundations.[1] After the 2010 congressional midterm elections, ALEC boasted that among those who won their elections, three of the four former state legislators newly-elected to the U.S. Senate are ALEC Alumni and 27 of the 42 former state legislators newly-elected to the U.S. House are ALEC Alumni. (A full list of the Congressional freshmen who are ALEC alums can be found here.) [2]

.

About ALEC

.

ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve model bills. Learn more at the Center for Media and Democracy's ALECexposed.org, and check out breaking news on our PRWatch.org site.

Koch Wiki

.

The Koch brothers -- David and Charles -- are the right-wing billionaire co-owners of Koch Industries. As two of the richest people in the world, they are key funders of the right-wing infrastructure, including the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the State Policy Network (SPN). In SourceWatch, key articles on the Kochs include: Koch Brothers, Koch Industries, Americans for Prosperity, American Encore, and Freedom Partners.

.

ALECs agenda extends into almost all areas of law. Its bills undermine environmental regulations and deny climate change; support school privatization; undercut health care reform; defund unions and limit their political influence; restrain legislatures abilities to raise revenue through taxes; mandate strict election laws that disenfranchise voters; increase incarceration to benefit the private prison industry, among many other issues. Grandparent's $1,500 Swing Set Creates a Rift in Wealthy D.C. Suburb

By Justin Wm. Moyer

May 6, 2016

Washington Post

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/
grandparents-1500-swing-set- creates-a-rift-in-wealthy-dc-suburb
/2016/05/05/35eec23e-0e53-11e6-a6b6-2e6de3695b0e_story.html

A shorter URL for the above link:

.

.

It was just a swing set. A $1,500 custom-designed swing set that doubles as a wisteria arbor in a posh Washington-area neighborhood, but just a swing set.

.

Still, the monkey bars and three swings Bill Maloni erected for his six grandchildren in the back yard of his Chevy Chase Village home have drawn ire. Months after the swing set went up last spring, Maloni was cited for a code violation, which triggered three hearings, a vote by the villages Board of Managers and, now, possible litigation.

.

snip

.

This wealthy enclave a tree-lined, 0.4-square-mile area just across the District line in Montgomery County is governed by an elected seven-member board. It is not the first time the village and surrounding neighborhoods have squabbled with residents over complaints that some might deem trivial and it is hardly alone in such disputes.

.

In the case of Maloni, village officials simply say that he is obligated to abide by the same regulations as the communitys 2,000 other residents.

.

snip

.

Ferguson said the swing set initially was described as an arbor in documents his family submitted requesting a variance. Then, things got a little wild.

.

Time went on, swings started being attached, she said. It became a play structure.

.

snip

.

A review of 79 pages of public documents detailing the swing sets troubled history and uncertain future show that the village has remained steadfast in its opposition.

.

The Board historically holds a very firm stance regarding the covenants, Ellen Sands, who is the permitting and code enforcement coordinator for the village, wrote in a letter to Maloni dated Dec. 8, 2015. One example: a controversial basketball net.

.

Recently, the Board denied a variance request filed by an applicant who sought to maintain a freestanding basketball hoop which had been installed without the applicable Building Permit, Sands wrote. The Board required that the Applicant remove the basketball hoop within a stated timeframe.

.

Maloni said many of his neighbors support the swing set. Some, including a church across the street, have submitted letters to the village on his behalf.

.

snip

.

I feel Ive been patronized, stiff-armed, told no and received very little of the famous neighborhood cooperation the chairman claims exists and is manifest, Maloni said, according to a recording of the meeting. Other than chop it down or cut it into two pieces, nobody from the village has reached out to me or my family to suggest a way to keep this innocuous swing set in place and employ it to do what they all do .?.?. allow kids to play and have fun in a carefree, safe atmosphere.

.

Ferguson said Maloni was presented with alternatives that he rejected. The swing set is anchored in concrete, for example, but Ferguson said the village might accept one anchored in another way.

.

(Indeed, the swing set stands where a cheaper Fisher-Price model once stood.)

Re: hi (Interactivity on the Web and Groups vs. Ways of Sharing Content and Making it Findable)

David P. Dillard

This post was shared on the JISC Disabilities-Education list to discuss some methods of making your content known and used in the social networking arena of discussion groups and blogs. Lesson number one is right in the heading which I changed from the friendly HI to a much more descriptive title that lets the reader know what I am talking about and read or not read based on their interest in this topic. I hope that some readers will find useful ideas in this post.

and Making it Findable)

I am not so sure that interactivity is the primary goal in sharing information, ideas, thoughts, sources and resources on the internet. One cannot control the decisions to respond, or not respond to the posts and other forms of writing placed on the internet by you. One can better control finding your content by others who search Google with related terminology.

One method for making ones ideas and knowledge of resources pubic and therefore accessable to readers needing this information is to post to groups that are public and archived so that search engines will find and index ones shared content. This can include lists that you create and own or on topic lists with other ownership.

"DISABILITY-RESEARCH" AND (jisc OR jiscmail)

http://tinyurl.com/jexpaq5

http://tinyurl.com/zugx39n

Use specific labels in all posts that share a type of content in ones posts so that folks looking for that specific kind of information will find as much of that type of information if they use words found in your label in your shared messages. I label my use of the SITE: command in Google Web searches as "Google Domain Limited Web Search" and in parenthesis label the kind of search I am using. Since most posters in the world do not share links to search results and of those who do, very few do shared results of searches using the SITE: Google command and nobody is using that phrase but me, my content of that type results from a search of that phrase. Hence, Google indexes that phrase so that anyone picking up on that phrase and searching it will find a small library of posts that have that search command embedded in those posts with links to the searches and search results shared in those posts via those links.

http://tinyurl.com/jfg7llx

In Google search results always click at the bottom to get to the last page of results, often a low number and then click on the link at the bottom

********************************************************************

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 11 already displayed. If you like, "you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."

********************************************************************

In this case one now can see around 170 results instead of 11 and of course share the link to this version of the search instead of the link to the eleven results.

These are a few of the results found with this search

Also instruct your readers if you wish to use edit/find on the resulting pages and in this case search "domain limited" to see the examples of this type of search on the resulting page.

One can create libraries of content on various topics through their own websites on Google Sites and by posting to their own publically archived discussion groups, publically archived discussion groups in fields relevant to the posts and on Wordpress and other blogs that again are public so that their content is indexed by Google as Google indexing controls see fit.

It takes substantial effort to do this kind of work, but if one believes their ideas and content are worth sharing, one will make these efforts.

One can use resources like Yahoo Groups, Groups.IO, Nabble, Freelists, Wordpress, any Listserv with relevant public lists that are on topic for your content for these sharings. Creating your own list(s) will protect you from readers who complain that your sharings are unwelcome because they are off topic or guilty of some other crime against humanity as it is your list and they are your guests. Many if not all of the lists on JISC are public. I own the Sport-Med list on JISC and JISC is a marvelous list service. This list is a very active and a very good discussion group on this network of lists. Consider this link on the topic area of this list.

http://tinyurl.com/hhr7csn

Use the ways in which your information is tagged, use them in searches, for example, and people will find and learn from your shared content. One can even create unique but simple tags that claim your use of a resource, consider the phrase "Temple Summon search".

https://www.google.com/#q=%22temple+summon+search%22

Since for the most part I am the only person in the world describing the Temple University version of this Proquest Discovery database, the "Summon" search tool with this group of three words in that order, a search of them leads to mostly my content. These are some techniques that can be used to put content online and have it read by interested folk by the use of search results that exploit your labeling of your content.

I hope that this helps.

My discussion groups and research guides on Google Sites

https://sites.google.com/site/researchguidesonsites/

Keep in mind that Google indexes content on Google including yours on the Google Sites websites you create and it does not take long for this to happen.

By the way, I spoke recently with a retired professor who now has a small job at another college. He was told by them that they could give him more work if he had a much larger active academically oriented social networking profile or track record.

Fort McMurray and the Fires of Climate Change

MAY 5, 2016

Now Fort McMurray is burning. A forest fire that began to the southwest of the town on Sunday has forced the entire populationalmost ninety thousand peopleto evacuate. On Wednesday, Albertas provincial government declared a state of emergency. By yesterday, more than fifteen hundred buildings had been destroyed and the blaze had spread through an area covering more than three hundred square miles. It was burning so hot that that it was easily able to jump major rivers. One Canadian official described the fire as catastrophic. Another called it a multi-headed monster.

.

No one knows exactly how the fire beganwhether it was started by a lightning strike or by a spark provided by a personbut its clear why the blaze, once under way, raged out of control so quickly. Alberta experienced an unusually dry and warm winter. Precipitation was low, about half of the norm, and what snow there was melted early. April was exceptionally mild, with temperatures regularly in the seventies; two days ago, the thermometer hit ninety, which is about thirty degrees higher than the regions normal May maximum. You hate to use the ?clich but it really was kind of a perfect storm, Mike Wotton, a research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service, told the CBC.

.

snip

.

You can say it couldnt get worse, Jolly added, but based on its own projections, the forest service expects that it will get worse. According to a Forest Service report published last April, Climate change has led to fire seasons that are now on average 78 days longer than in 1970. Over the past three decades, the area destroyed each year by forest fires has doubled, and the services scientists project that its likely to double again by midcentury. A group of scientists who analyzed lake cores from Alaska to obtain a record of forest fires over the past ten thousand years found that, in recent decades, blazes were both unusually frequent and unusually severe. This extreme combination suggests a transition to a unique regime of unprecedented fire activity, they concluded.

.

All of this brings us to what one commentator referred to as the black irony of the fire that has destroyed most of Fort McMurray.

.

The town exists to get at the tar sands, and the tar sands produce a particularly carbon-intensive form of fuel. (The fight over the Keystone XL pipeline is, at its heart, a fight over whether the U.S. should be encouraging or, if you prefer, profiting from the exploitation of the tar sands.) The more carbon that goes into the atmosphere, the warmer the world will get, and the more likely we are to see devastating fires like the one now raging.

experts and the thought leaders are leading, directing and influencing
less and less every year. We are entering an age where the very
concepts of authority will be challenged and reinvented."

Deadly Rwanda Floods Leave Thousands Homeless

Nearly 50 people dead after torrential downpours cause landslides in north of country.

Aljazeera

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/05/rwanda-floods-160509101153913.html

.

.

At least 49 people have been killed after heavy rain caused widespread flooding across parts of Rwanda.

.

The small central African country was hit by torrential downpours over the weekend.

.

The Northern Province was worst affected and suffered the highest death toll.

.

Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs Minister Seraphine Mukantabana said 42 of the victims came from Gakenke district. The rest belonged to Ngororero and Rubavu districts in the west, as well as Muhanga in the south.

.

There were also dozens of injuries, with at least 26 people requiring hospital treatment.

.

The heavy downpours caused landslides that blocked roads across the north of the country, cutting off thousands of people.

.

Buildings have been damaged and nearly 500 homes have been destroyed, leaving thousands of people homeless.

Houston Floods: Disaster Zone Declared after 'Historic' Rainfall

19 April 2016

From the section US and Canada

CNN

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36079009

.

.

Flash flooding and more rain is possible in Houston, a day after record rainfall killed five people.

.

Meteorologists said some 17.6in (44.7cm) of rain fell on the city on Monday alone, levels that national officials said were "historic".

.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency in Houston, where 70,000 people were left without power.

.

Rivers burst their banks in the fourth-largest US city and 1,200 people were rescued from rising floodwaters.

.

At least 1,000 homes have flooded, with the number likely to rise. City officials have turned a large shopping centre into an evacuation centre.

.

As well as telling people not to drive in the fast-flowing waters, city officials warned against allowing children to play in waters that are likely to contain snakes and ants.

.

Among the worst-hit areas is Greenspoint, a poor, mainly Hispanic district of more than 112,000 people to the north of the city centre.

Houston Flooding: 7 Dead, 1,200 Rescued -- and More Rain to Come

By Holly Yan and Ed Lavandera

CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/19/us/houston-texas-flooding/

.

Houston (CNN)While some parts of Houston are starting to recover from paralyzing flooding, some residents believe the worst is yet to come.

.

The problem: Cypress Creek in northwest Houston keeps rising and still hasn't crested, officials say, and forecasters expect more rain Wednesday.Updated 1:09 PM ET, Wed April 20, 2016

.

snip

.

The catastrophic flooding has killed seven people, flooded 1,000 homes and caused more than $5 billion in damage.

.

The Houston-area community of Hockley got pummeled with 17 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. That's more rain than Salt Lake City gets in a year.

.

Gov. Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster for nine counties in and around the Houston area.

.

Emergency crews made more than 1,200 high-water rescues as some residents swam out of their homes.

.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the city will offer shuttle service to evacuees staying in shelters so they can return home and pick up any belongings "that may be salvageable."

Fort McMurray Fire:
'This Beast is an Extraordinarily Difficult Problem'

Edmonton, Alberta (CNN)For an inferno deemed "out of control" and 0% contained, firefighters are actually optimistic.

.

That's because several bits of good news are on the horizon: The weather is starting to cooperate. The blaze is headed to sparsely populated areas. And firefighters from across Canada are suiting up to join the battle.

.

The Fort McMurray wildfire in Alberta has already torched 400,000 acres --
half the size of Rhode Island. But that's far better than the roughly 500,000 acres officials feared would be gone by now.

.

"We're very happy we've held the fire better than expected," Alberta fire official Chad Morrison said. "We hope to see continued success over the next few days. For us this is great firefighting weather."

.

The slowdown of the fire is the best news Canadian officials have shared since the fire started May 1.

.

And the record-high temperatures that scorched northern Alberta last week will dip to below average and stay in the mid-50s through Thursday, CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

.

Is this what climate change looks like?

.

But the fire is still 0% contained and burning "out of control," the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry department said.

.

"We may be turning a corner, but it's too early to celebrate," said Ralph Goodale, federal minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

.

"This beast is an extraordinarily difficult problem."

.

Inferno moves east

.

After forcing more than 90,000 people to flee their homes in Alberta, the blaze now is heading east toward Saskatchewan province.

.

"We're working closely and collaboratively with the Saskatchewan government to assist them with their preparations," Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said.

Several tornadoes that hit north of Wray in Yuma County made a mess of the area with reports of downed fences and livestock on the loose.

.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office also reported minor injuries to five people and asked residents to avoid traveling on U.S. 385 north out of Wray. The road was closed after the 6 p.m. tornado hit but was reopened at 9 p.m.

.

Harsh weather hit the northeastern side of Colorado throughout the day, with tornado warnings and tornado watches issued during the late afternoon and into the evening.

.

In Wray, the tornado hit near U.S. 385 at Yuma County Road 37, within a mile of city limits. Damage was heaviest where the tornado with a path six miles long and one-half mile wide began curving northeast past Yuma County Road 42, according to the Sheriff's Office.

While the current focus remains on the immediate safety and physical well-being of Fort McMurray residents displaced by wildfires, one expert in emergency management says theres a long road ahead for their emotional and mental health recovery.

.

Suzanne Bernier is a certified emergency management consultant who has helped people through disasters like the 2003 SARS outbreak, Hurricane Katrina and more. She says, while many will grieve all they have lost in the fires, others who have found that all their possessions survived will feel guilt that they were spared.

.

Thats one thing that sets in, pretty much from the start, that we see all the time, this survivors guilt, Bernier told CTVs Canada AM Friday from North Bay.

.

It is often hard for those who emerge unscathed to watch friends struggle with all they have lost, and many will find themselves asking: Why do I deserve more than others?

.

Whats difficult about disasters like the one in Fort McMurray, she says, is that they dont just destroy physical things; they steal peoples sense of well-being and personal security. Even if survivors are able to one day return to their homes, almost everything from their previous lives will have changed forever.

.

Bernier says the good news is that there will be psychological help available in the shelters -- mental health support workers who can help people sort through their feelings, and child workers who can keep children occupied while also helping to explain what is happening to them.
So often, she said, its not difficult to evaluate how a community is rebuilding physically, because it can be seen, but its harder to gauge how people are rebuilding emotionally.

.

Bernier said she hopes that a good crisis response and communications plan has been put into place, and that professionals will be made available to respond to the mental health of the residents.

.

Not just now during this response phase when they are all being evacuated, when they dont know if or when they will be able to return to their properties, but also looking ahead to the recovery phase. And that could be months if not years, she said.

When Kyrstyn Mrochuk heard how large the wildfire in Alberta's north had grown, she couldn't comprehend it.

.

Officials said Thursday that the fiery behemoth raging in Fort McMurray had grown to 85,000 hectares. It has prompted the largest fire evacuation in the province's history, with more than 80,000 people forced out of the city.

.

Mrochuk told The Huffington Post Alberta she wanted a better perspective on the size of the wildfire, so she used Google Maps to overlay the size of the fire over Edmonton where she's lived her whole life.

.

"So I placed that area on top of my home and was just ... astonished," she wrote in a Reddit message. "My entire city, wiped out."

.

To help others who might not understand the scale of the blaze, Mrochuk did the same for different cities worldwide.

.

"What would happen if all of Tokyo was under fire instead? It's quite chilling to me," she said.

Fort McMurray Fire has Been Raging for over a Week

The wildfire, once measured in football fields, now sits at three times the size of Edmonton

It's been one week since the fire known as "the beast" reared it's ugly head.

.

The wildfire outside of Fort McMurray, once measured in football fields, now sits at more than 2,000 square kilometres, three times the size of Edmonton.

.

"The beast" continues to grow and has now set its sights on Saskatchewan.

.

More than 500 firefighters working alongside 15 helicopters and 14 air tankers are battling the blaze.

.

Over the past seven days the fire has consumed more than 1,600 homes and buildings. It's forced 80,000 people from their homes and remains untamable.

.

The "beast" isn't the only inferno raging across Alberta's forests, in total 43 fires are burning seven out of control, one being held, and 35 under control.

.

Twelve new fires started on Saturday alone.

.

State of the neighbourhoods

.

Ever since the beginning of the burn Darby Allen, the fire chief of the Wood Buffalo Regional Municipality, has been the voice for those on the front lines.

.

Allen said that he knows people are worried about their homes and are frustrated with the lack of information.

.

"We're really working hard on that. It's a complicated process," said Allen. "What's damaged, what's left, is it a garage only, is it a house?"

.

"So we really will get that to you as soon as we possibly can."

Fort McMurray wildfire could burn for months

Fire still feeding off dry boreal forest,
weather expected to cool in coming days

Fire officials say the Fort McMurray wildfire is still spreading and is so massive that only a significant amount of rain can bring it under control.

.

Wind gusts of 40 to 70 km/h were expected in the region Sunday, and possibly light rain, as part of a cold front that's moving into northern Alberta.

.

The winds will help fuel the flames and what little moisture there is should not bring much relief to those battling the fire.

.

"It certainly will increase in size today, and it's still listed as out of control and the conditions are still very dry. We do have some difficult weather, some interesting weather, coming up," said Matthew Anderson, wildfire information officer with Alberta Agriculture, speaking from Edmonton on Sunday.

.

"There's another cold front coming through and ahead of that front it's going to be very gusty, so this morning that could cause some significant growth as the winds shift and move through," he told CBC News.

.

"However, behind it, it's bringing cooler temperatures, at least by 10 degrees, perhaps dropping, and the humidity is increasing as well."

LAC LA BICHE, Alberta (Reuters) - A raging Canadian wildfire grew explosively on Saturday as hot, dry winds pushed the blaze across the energy heartland of Alberta and smoke forced the shutdown of a major oil sands project.

.

The fire that has already prompted the evacuation of 88,000 people from the city of Fort McMurray was on its way to doubling in size on Saturday, the seventh day of what is expected to be the costliest natural disaster in Canadas history.

.

Police escorted another convoy of evacuees out of the oil sands region north of Fort McMurray, taking them on a harrowing journey through burned out parts of the city and billowing smoke. Some 1,600 structures are believed to have been lost.

.

With temperatures on Saturday expected to rise as high as 28 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit), officials said the weather was hindering efforts to fight the wildfire.

.

It is a dangerous, unpredictable fire, an absolutely vicious fire that is feeding off of an extremely dry boreal forest, Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale told a media briefing.

.

The fire had scorched at least 156,000 hectares (385,000 acres) by Saturday morning, the Alberta government said. Officials warned late on Friday that the area affected by the fire, which they then said was 101,000 hectares, could double in size by the end of Saturday.

.

More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze in and around Fort McMurray, along with 15 helicopters and 14 air tankers, the Alberta government said.

.

Within Fort McMurray, visibility is often less than 30 feet (9 meters) due to the smoke, making it still very dangerous to circulate in the city, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Kevin Kunetzki told reporters at a highway checkpoint.

.

Despite the fires rapid spread, Goodale said there was no indication that oil infrastructure was at risk.

.

But the Syncrude oil sands project said Saturday it will shut down its northern Alberta operation and remove all personnel from the site due to smoke. There was no imminent threat from the fire.

.

At least 10 oil sand operators have cut production due to evacuations and other emergency measures that complicated delivery of petroleum by rail, pipeline and highway.

Wildfire at Fort Mcmurray Quickly Overtakes Canada's Environmental Debate

A wildfire was growing just outside Fort McMurray, but Matt Hepditch went to work in the oil sands the way he always does.

.

Some people had evacuated, though reports the night before suggested the fire would move away from the hard-working city at the center of Canada's oil industry.

.

Then the wind shifted.

.

"At 2 o'clock, they called us in and said, 'If you want to go, you can go,'" Hepditch recalled. "Then chunks of ash started falling. That's when I knew we had to leave."

.

Hepditch rushed home to his girlfriend and their 3-year-old daughter and loaded the pickup.

.

That was Tuesday afternoon. It was the third day of May and 90 degrees. Within hours, "Fort Mac" would explode into fire and its nearly 90,000 residents would flee in a harrowing exodus.

.

People drove across fields, ran out of gas, abandoned their cars, hitched rides with strangers and watched their homes and neighborhoods burn on surveillance cameras linked to their phones even as they sped away. All the while, flames roared beside the road. A gas station erupted. It was hard to breathe.

.

It was dangerous and digital and biblical, and no one knows what will become of the city they left behind or how it all will affect the oil industry. "The city of Fort McMurray is not safe to return to, and this will be true for a significant period of time," Rachel Notley, Alberta's premier, said Friday.

.

Though the cause of the fire has not been determined, the inferno has become symbolic of the tension within Canada over its role in climate change.

.

Some Canadians see the fire as nature lashing back at those who mistreat it in the name of profit.

.

Others see the hard science: a wildfire formed in conditions consistent with climate change striking with academic irony, not vengeance, in a place that helps supply the world with a fossil fuel. The evacuees were really climate refugees, they say.

.

Still others view it as just very bad luck, a setback the oil industry will find a way to overcome.

.

The debate reflects a country wrestling within itself at a difficult moment and it is testing that famous Canadian civility.

.

snip

.

But environmentalism has also been rising in Canada, particularly in urban areas and on the coasts, and Trudeau, elected last fall, is striving to reestablish the country as a progressive international player, including as a leader on climate issues.

.

Trudeau acknowledged that climate change will cause extreme weather events but added, "There have always been fires. There have always been floods. Pointing at any one incident and saying: 'This is because of that' is neither helpful, nor entirely accurate. We need to separate a pattern over time from any one event."

.

The overwhelming public response to the fire has been sympathy for its victims, and many Canadians have been strikingly kind and generous. People offer to buy lunch for people they have never met. Free water and coffee have been easy to find. Some hotels have lowered their prices or let people stay for free.

.

A group of recent refugees from Syria has volunteered to help, as has the town of Lac-Megantic in Quebec, which is still recovering from the explosion of an oil train in 2013 that killed more than 40 people and destroyed much of its downtown.

.

When Hepditch and his family arrived here in the tiny town of Wandering River, they were amazed to see volunteers gathered at the fire hall handing out free clothes and serving burgers to anyone who showed up.
