Theosophists Should Rejoice

Amy Coney Barrett newest Supreme Court Judge in USA is a practical “Theosophist”

She belongs to a religious group with the Motto “serve one another and the community as a whole in all needs: spiritual, material, financial”

Is this not true practical Theosophy?

Just talking about Universal Brotherhood is just an intellectual concept.

Serving our fellow men and women is a start.

Charity starts at home.

She has five kids of her own. She also has adopted two black children from Haiti

How many American Theosophists have adopted black children?

This puts American Theosophists to shame!

TheosophicalSociety in America at a Critical Juncture ---

M K Ramadoss

Theosophical Society in America at a Critical Juncture ---

In recent days, Theosophy News posted several messages on Internet Forums trying to alert theosophists about the critical juncture faced by the American Section. Explanation is needed why Theosophy News feels the urgency. Discussed below is the background info. It is hoped that the reader will see the facts and come to their own conclusions.

Executive Summary

The American Section has the largest membership second to India. During the last four decades, it is losing membership non stop. Today it is less than 50% of what it was four decades ago.

While every spiritually oriented group which has come to USA from the East has continuously grown, only Theosophical Society in America has been losing membership. So far no one has identified the root cause.

Killing of George Floyd, woke up USA to the injustice endured by Afro Americans. It led to self examination of all segments to see what can be done to redress the injustice faced by Afro Americans and other minorities.

Certain event took place in the American Section which led the writer, a theosophist for over sixty years, to inquire the reasons why membership continues to drop in spite of heavy infusion of money from Kern Foundation ($1 million annually) and other sources. This led to the discovery of the root cause of the continued drop in membership which has baffled many theosophists and its leaders.

The root cause is very simple and stares in your face. Theosophy in America did not reach the minorities especially Afro Americans. United States is a melting pot of immigrants. Early immigrants were from Europe and they later brought slaves from Africa. Today’s immigrants are from every country in the world. In a few years, the descendants of immigrants from non-European Countries will become the majority.

Anyone visiting a theosophical conference or meeting in USA will see for themselves total lack of minorities especially blacks. The writer, who has lived long in Texas has seen just ONE black member in the last four decades. Even he was a student from Africa.

The Great Guru who was behind the launch of modern theosophy movement made it clear that theosophy is not for elites alone and has to reach alpha and omega of Humanity. Theosophical Society in America has failed to reach Afro Americans.

Great places of pilgrimage attract large crowds due to the presence of Initiates. Analogically the spiritual backing of the Initiates is essential for any movement to succeed. Failure of American Section to take theosophy to the minorities seems to have resulted in the loss of spiritual support of Initiates. Continued depletion of members is a clear evidence of this.

If the situation is not turned around quickly and American members get active in projects to take theosophy to the growing minorities, the theosophical movement in USA cannot flourish. Public is now sensitized to the issue of treatment of minorities. So when it sees a group which is de facto practicing exclusivity, natural forces would shut it down.

Early Days of Theosophy in USA

HPB and Olcott, a White woman and a White man, launched theosophy movement in 1875, whose foundation is Brotherhood. Inspiration came from two Eastern Gurus. They sacrificed everything they had – prime of life and all the money to spread theosophy to the world and they succeeded.

United States was a young growing country and the Eastern Seers foresaw its great future. Today, rest of the world looks to USA for all social and political leadership.

As a growing civilization, it was seen as the seat of future Religion of the world. The Great Adept stated “the Theosophical Society was chosen as the cornerstone, the foundation of the future religion of humanity. To achieve the proposed object, a greater, wiser, and especially a more benevolent intermingling of the high and low, of the alpha and the omega of society, was determined upon. The white race must be the first to stretch out the hand of fellowship to the dark nations, to call the poor despised “nigger” brothers.”

In the first half century, many unselfish white men and women helped the growth of theosophical society in the United States. However, no effort was made to take theosophy to the emancipated slaves and other minorities. So the membership and leadership became exclusively white immigrants and their descendants. This continued and no theosophical leader recognized the critical need to take theosophy for the blacks and other minorities.

Failure of the Esoteric Section –

Esoteric Section is called the Heart of Theosophical Society. Theosophical leaders look to inspiration from it and its Head. Every International President and National Leader is a member. In Theosophical Society one cannot move up the leadership ladder unless one is a member.

Since 1980s Radha Burnier was its Head, in addition to holding the position of International President. She lived in Adyar and infrequently visited USA. So she did not have first hand knowledge of criticality of the failure of spreading theosophy to the minorities especially the blacks.

Her successor lives in Australia and visits USA infrequently. She too does not have first hand knowledge of critical need to take theosophy to the minorities in USA. One has to live a long time in the USA to understand the critical role minorities are playing and how theosophy can immensely benefit them. So the Esoteric Section also missed this critical fact.

American Section outsources the training of future leaders to Krotona where Esoteric Section has its American headquarters. Obviously the trainers have no clue to the critical need to take theosophy to the minorities especially Afro Americans.

Failure of leadership identify right priorities

American Section has had several excellent leaders. All of them are able, scholarly and dedicated theosophists. However, they did not pay attention to growth of branches. Growth of American Section depends on the growth of membership in branches. While it is the responsibility of the branches to develop programs, elected leaders have a responsibility to act as coaches to help branches to grow with right priorities.

In addition, money from the branches seems to have been siphoned off by National Center to support its activities. An example was discovered in the Cleveland, Ohio branch. Cleveland has a significant Afro American population. Yet the branch, which is 70 yrs old has almost no Afro American member. It is also an affluent branch and most of its income is sent to National Center and very small amount spent in local activities. No one has asked the simple question why the branch has not grown and has no diversity. Similar situation may be pervasive in other branches.

Even after the Black Lives Matter – issue came to the focus of American Public, to-date theosophical leaders in USA are silent on lack of black members. Neither have they recognized the critical failure nor have they publicly announced the steps being taken to take theosophy to the minorities. Continued status quo would only kill Theosophical Society in America. Government can step in and decide American Section is operating as an exclusive club and cancel its tax exempt status.

Missed opportunity to take theosophy to minorities

Three decades ago, theosophists in USA had an opportunity to bring theosophy to the minorities. Bing Escudero, a well known theosophist from Philippines emigrated to USA. He worked full time for the American Section and widely toured theosophical branches and lectured. He formerly led the Philippines Section and had a lot of organizing experience. When he ran for the elected office of the National President in USA, he was defeated. Many theosophists believe he lost because he was not a native born theosophist with right national lineage. Had he succeeded, branches would have expanded and theosophy would have spread around the country and reached minorities and we would not be in today’s critical predicament.

Duty of theosophists in America

All the leaders in USA are now salaried employees like preachers in churches. Every successful great social movement was led by unselfish volunteers. HPB and Olcott did not negotiate salaries when they accepted the task of spreading theosophy to the world. So we have low expectation of quick action from salaried leaders.

Today, everyone of us have access to very powerful communication tools of communication for free through Internet Social Forums. You can disseminate your ideas to the world at very little cost. Even if you do not have a computer, you can always go to the local library and get on Internet and speak up.

Too long, members have been silent on issues critical to the well being of theosophy. Today, American Section is in a critical juncture. Unless theosophists wake up and get active, Theosophical Society in America may get shut down due to natural causes. So whatever you can do, better hurry up. All good acts have the blessings of the Higher Powers looking for unselfish volunteers to spread Universal Brotherhood.

Let us all TRY anything we think would help.

Peace

Critical Status of Theosophical Society in America

M K Ramadoss

Theosophical movement was launched in USA in 1875 and Brotherhood is the foundation. Main object was stated as -

Create a nucleus of Universal Brotherhood without any distinction - caste, creed, race, sex, (skin) color or national origin. This has a unique meaning to the USA.

Theosophy founded in USA. Why? A young growing country - melting pot with great future - world leader - Country to which rest of the world looks to.

TSA HAD 100 YEARS TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL OF BROTHERHOOD TO ALL -

WHAT'S THE REALITY?

What do you find? ZERO DIVERSITY in its members. Do you know how many Afro American members it has. Almost none. Yes NONE.

Truth is NOT admitted by TS leaders

NO aggressive plan to bring diversity urgently.

Today Diversity is a great social issue in USA

Everyone in USA knows it.

Theosophical Society in America is supported by taxpayer money due to its tax exempt status. Has multi-million dollar annual budget. So Public has a great interest.

Would public allow tax supported TSA to continue with no diversity? No, No, No.

Public will shut it down unless it comes out plans to bring Diversity urgently.

Let's hope and pray to our favorite Gods and Gurus that the leaders and members wake up before it is too late.

Send your loving and supportive thoughts to Wheaton. Does not cost anything.

They may save TSA

Peace

The contribution of T Subba Row to the Theosophical Movement is indeed very valuable.
Having read Isis Unveiled he entered into correspondence with HPB,  which lead to a long and cherished association with both the Founders. His first letter to HPB shows his eager interest in Occult Science and the ‘Ineffable word’. He was instrumental for Founders’ visit to Madras and the location of HQ at Adyar. He had put in his efforts to formulate and systematize the philosophy of Theosophy. His Occult knowledge, highly appreciated by the Adepts occasionally, also speaks for his Chelaship of One among Them, even before the establishment of the theosophical association and his joining that.
He was very sensitive to Occult literature and its practices, could not tolerate the sacrilege to that Science such as teaching to ineligible persons. He was not averse to Teaching the Westerners. He edited The Theosophist on behalf of HPB when she was away from HQ, Chennai. He was a member of the Council and also the Counsel for TS. A Medal was constituted in his name, at the insistence of a Master, to be awarded to an author every year. He lived a very short life of 33 years. Childless, he authorized his wife to adopt a boy.
He was the Secretary and later President of Madras Theosophical Society’s Branch. He did not appear to have visited any places, including Eluru and Kakinada (his native places in the composite Madras presidency, now in Andhrapradesh) on any Lecture tour for the TS. Perhaps his professional work being a very busy Lawyer at Madras did not permit him the time. But he had many chelas for himself, to mention a few: C Ramiah, VVSAvadhani, Subramania Iyer, Bhavani Shanker ; Ookley, CWL etc.) He helped many on the Path.
It was his desire to retire early from the professional work, and lead a retired and relaxed life to write Books on Prasthanatraya. Kapila was his Ideal. He had contacts with Jupiter and other Masters. He was to be an assistant author for The Secret Doctrine, but for reasons already on record did not work on it. He liked the Proem. HPB, the author, immortalized him by immensely quoting from his Bhagavad-gita Lectures. His statements on Occult Philosophy stand the test of time.
HPB made 3 prophesies in her Obituary note on him: He should come back soon; be born in South India; and must have longer life. They were, it appears, fulfilled.

WHO AM I?

Ramu

WHO AM I?

It is factually wrong to say, "I was born". No doubt it refers to a baby that was born, the brain of which developed a mind in due course, and that mind for its own need, formed a notional centre that came to be termed as "I".

In other words, there is no such thing or no entity as "I" .

the secret doctrine

Ramanujachary nallanchakravarti

The “Wurzburg Manuscript”
Dr N C Ramanujachary
‘It seems to be “the order of things” that certain objects that are intended not to disappear do finally turn up. The original manuscript of the first Secret Doctrine, Vol.I, sent by H.P.B to Colonel Olcott, was at Adyar. How it reached Dr Besant’s room in Banaras I do not know; but once when she was not present at Convention I happened to look into an empty bookcase in her room, and on one shelf, in a dark corner, lying flat, was this big foolscap volume. Who had forgotten it when emptying the shelves, I do not know. I brought it to Adyar and began publishing it,’ writes Mr. C Jinarajadasa, in article published in The Theosophist, April 1952.
But he had to abandon its publication, which appeared seriatum since October 1932 to November 1933, in The Theosophist, ‘owing to the many difficulties constantly encountered in getting this Manuscript ready for printing’, as explained  by him in the issue for November 1933.
We cannot, at this later date, understand whether this happening is mere accidental, occasional, or mystical in its character. Mr. David Reigle, in his well documented Introduction to the Book “The Secret Doctrine Wurzburg Manuscript by H. P. Blavatsky: (pub: Eastern School Press, 2014) gives out the sequential events, also discussing the authenticity of third volume of The Secret Doctrine, 1897. The value addition of the book is the inclusion of Mr. Daniel Caldwell’s two pieces as appendices. The Chronology of the writing makes it abundantly interesting for a common reader as well to a keen student-researcher.
Madame Blavatsky begins her prologue ‘To the Readers” with a quote from Epictetus: “Strike but listen”, while this gets transformed in the final printed version to read as: Introductory: “Gently to hear, Kindly to judge” (Shakespeare, Henry V, Prologue).
Readers are perhaps aware and do remember that when the text The Secret Doctrine was initially thought of, it was proposed and supposed to be an ‘elaboration’ of Isis Unveiled(1877), in an intent to make the contents more comprehensive and understandable.  But the total plan was revised and re-revised a number of times. A mention of an old Book appears on the first page of Isis, where as we are provided with an explanation of the first page. ‘The short allusion to “the seventy thousand years of experience” has also to be vindicated and shown correct and the claims of the Kabalists and the Occultists more definitely stated. The eastern Adepts claim more decidedly their science to be older than that; for they place its origin with the First Race of men “whose thoughts were objectively expressed in  colour” as Speech descended later on, on Earth’ she asserts here. She reaffirms that Isis was a first and cautious attempt to acquaint the public with Occultism. She prepares the reader ‘to understand more clearly the teachings on Cosmic Evolution and the birth of man; and shows “on the authority of numberless works, ancient, mediaeval and modern, the actual existence of a WISDOM-RELIGION whose origin is lost in prehistoric periods”; as also that ‘the primitive Revelation to mankind as taught in the oldest record in the world (is) now in possession and safe keeping of the few surviving Initiates in Central Asia.” ’
H.P.B. wanted ‘to divide the few lines from the Old book’ into three principal groups:
  1. The ages of the World, our globe and that of man
  2. The primeval Manus of Humanity, under their various differentiations
  3. The first men of the Fourth Root-race and the Fifth of present mankind.
She categorically states that the last seventh sub race of the Third Root-race fell into generation and that we are one of the last offshoots of the first sub-races of the 5th great Aryan Race. (p.251 of the text)
Similarly, in each section of the text we find invariably some new idea or fact that provokes the thought. She says in the Section 5 ‘The Trial of the Sun-Initiates’: “If the Jesuits contented themselves with making dupes of  Freemasons, and converting that order into a mere convivial Benefit Club, which allures members by the prospect of refined Banquets in the Societies of Princes, statesmen and eloquent orators in speech and song. Their lethal plotting, however, have a much wider scope, and embrace a minuteness of detail and care of which the world in general has no idea. Everything must be done by them to bring the mass of mankind again to the state of passive ignorance and superstition. --- If Masonry was spoiled by the Jesuits they are unable to crush the real, invisible Rosicrucians and the Eastern Initiate.  --- The Hierophant of the Sapta Sindhava (seven rivers) and of the SAPTARSHI (the seven great Rishis) is not killed and may have something to say to the modern Initiate of the “Seven Hills.” It is only a question of time and patience,---” (p.119-20)
Coming back to the history of writing, in a letter to Mr. Sinnett (April 25, 1884), HPB writes: “I thank you for the intention you had of writing the Preface for Secret Doctrine. – I did not ask you to do it but the Mahatmas and Mohini here, and Subba Row there (at Adyar TS Headquarters) are quite sufficient for the task of helping me. --- But my own predilections or wishes have naught to do with my duty. MASTER orders and wills it be rewritten and rewrite I will.---“ Even earlier, in January 1884, she writes to him: ‘Subba Row helping me and writing most of the commentaries and explanations’. T. Subba Row, however, withdrew from cooperating with her work for his own reasons, but has ‘liked the Proem part of the first volume’, which we find from a letter of H.P>B. to Col. Olcott. We must remember the ‘proem’ consists in its part the ‘three fundamental propositions’ that offer the basic philosophy of theosophy.
In a letter to Colonel Olcott, February 24, 1888, H.P.B. writes: “It is I, who brought in, the first, the existence of our Masters to the world and the T.S. I did it because They sent me to do the work and make a fresh experiment in this XIX Century and I have done it, the best I knew how. It may not dovetail with Subba Row’s ideas, (but) it answers truth and fact.”
The Secret Doctrine text appeared in many editions brought from various publishing units; many abridgements, digests, commentarial books too came in, and we have minutes of HPB’s meetings, dialogues with students in recent years providing additional material for contemplative reflection. Yet, the reading of the Wurzburg Manuscript has its own unique and specific advantage. The same time we must also remember H.P.B’s words: The text basically is written ‘to show that the occult side of Nature has never been approached by the Science of modern civilization’ and ‘to assign to man his rightful place in the scheme of the Universe’.  This must induce further exploration by the scholars in every walk of life. Also the statement that the work is dedicated ‘to all true theosophists in every country and of every race for they called it forth and for them it was written,’ decidedly increases our responsibility.                                                                       #####
The Secret Doctrine Wurzburg Manuscript’ by H P Blavatsky(subtitled The 1885-1886 Version with the Stanzas of Dzyan and HPB’s Accompanying Commentaries)” --- is a recent publication from Eastern School Press (2014). Mr David Reigle provides an enlightening Introduction, running to 9 pages, wherein the reader can find the story of text’s writing, and its non-availability in full in public domain till now. Therein also is a particular reference to ‘a solitary page’ containing the three fundamental propositions  and three different versions thereof. Mr Reigle says “ It is a mystery how this solitary page got to Adyar, it is even greater mystery how another page came into the hands of Manly Hall in California. These are the only two pages from it now known to existence.”
Mr Reigle humbly says: “Preparing the Wurzburg Manuscript for publication was no small task. It required considerable labor and considerable expense. I was only one of four individuals involved in this task, the other three preferring to remain anonymous. It was they who did most of the work and bore all the expense. I offer my sincere thanks to them.” Yet the reading public and researchers do have a deep sense of gratitude and thankfulness for the undaunted courage they, all the four, had in performing the total work.

The text running to 380+XV pages is divided into three volumes ( History of some great occultists; Evolution of Cosmos and Evolution of Man) apart from three appendices.

Dear Sir,
Very nice write up on Bro. T. Subba Rao. It fondly revived his sweet memories and valuable contribution to Theosophical movement. I have also read your book on T. Subba Rao which is also very good. By the way can you give me some information about Judge N.D.Khandalawala? Thank You. With Greetings, Shashank.D.Burse

And how were the HPB’s prophecies regarding T Subba Row’s reincarnation fulfilled, may I ask?

The contribution of T Subba Row to the Theosophical Movement is indeed very valuable.
Having read Isis Unveiled he entered into correspondence with HPB,  which lead to a long and cherished association with both the Founders. His first letter to HPB shows his eager interest in Occult Science and the ‘Ineffable word’. He was instrumental for Founders’ visit to Madras and the location of HQ at Adyar. He had put in his efforts to formulate and systematize the philosophy of Theosophy. Is that some theory?

What is the basis of assertion of "universal consciousness" and for each of us containing its spark?
