A group called People of Praise came into focus due to nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, for Supreme Court vacancy in USA. This group came into being in 1970 and have more than 1700 followers in USA. They all belong to various Christian denominations.

Part of the focus is the “lifelong promise of love and service to fellow community members, … a covenant commitment,” that members make “which establishes our relationships as members of the People of Praise community,” according to their website, which added “our covenant is neither an oath nor a vow, but it is an important personal commitment” among people who “support each other financially and materially and spiritually.”

Theosophists struggling to understand real meaning of Brotherhood can see how groups like this in USA are practicing “Brotherhood”.

By the way, Amy has adopted two kids from Haiti who are afro american, which speaks for itself!

Theosophy seen as a Cult in USA???

With Internet world sees everything. Good and bad. Nothing can be hidden.

Leaders in USA are on salary like priests in churches

Lack of Diversity in USA members. Very very few afro american and other minorities.

Added to it is members are secretly kicked out, in as little as two hours.

Even churches are transparent when members are excommunicated.

So when public learns about it, many wonder what kind of people theosophists are.

A negative view is developed in public minds.

It is hurting the spread of theosophy to the masses who really can use its gems.

Can Theosophists be silent any more, continue to repeat what is in great scriptures and use meditation and other techniques in the hope of salvation.

Sad is the situation and no leader seems to be concerned.

Anyone wants to add?

I would love to sign up/receive something like that.

Don’t hesitate to contact me if you know something of the kind, or would like to start it.

Thanks!

Lack of Diversity in Theosophical Society - A Comment

M K Ramadoss

Lack of Diversity in Theosophical Society

Dominique Johnson (who is Black and from Chicago,) commented on the Internet blog The American Minervan -

In all my years, when I did some volunteering at the T.S. (Illinois), I’ve only seen 3 other Black people outside of the Society, and one was a kid that came in asking Pablo Sender at the time, was the Theosophical Society Illuminati.

I’ve also attributed the decline in membership in the wider distrust and conspiratorial theories affecting perception about Theosophy, or the history of Esoteric Tradition in general. It is not the sole problem, but it is part of it. I forgot the book I read from, but it explained, that by the 1930s, the T.S. was in inevitable decline, because the Krishnamurti issue finally established it in the mind of the public as a sham. This is one reason I made this blog to educate on the history, but I had learned that some didn’t like the blog. Youth Groups were canceled from the top leadership. The reason given was lack of success in bringing in membership. It used to be, that Christianity and established traditions were declining, and people sought out alternatives (they still are), but that brought out a century of cults, phony gurus, etc. The fascination with “The Orient” wore out, for one reason due to so much fraud and scandals alongside the swift and relentless campaign Evangelicals went on throughout the 20th century against “Occultism” and foreign influences. I could give a very honest multiple number of reasons for the decline of the Theosophical Society, but apparently just talking about makes those in the Society uncomfortable. I don’t know why they won’t listen. As to Black people in America, I cannot speak for all of course, but I have studied my own community, which would be hard to convince, given Christian and Islamic influence, including agnosticism or atheism (though quiet), and many pro-Black alternative traditions, mostly all steeped in conspiratorial thinking, i.e., Anti-Theosophy, Anti-Masonry, Illuminati conspiracy. These groups often mention H.P. Blavatsky in their lectures albeit through a negative twisted lens. The conversation is dominated by a racial perspective.”

Elephant in the American Theosophical Room

M K Ramadoss

Elephant in the American Theosophical Room

is an idiom for an important or enormous topic, question, or controversial issue that is obvious or that everyone knows about but no one mentions or wants to discuss

The Elephant in the American Theosophical Room is the lack of diversity which is hurting spread of theosophy to the masses. Already the effect is obvious. Drop in membership and today it is 50% of what it was forty years ago. BLM has brought attention to this fact and all the leaders are silent. What are their future plans?

Status quo would kill current theosophical organizations.
Time to wake up and bring diversity.
It’s not easy and also time consuming

Talk to your leaders and ask what their plans are?

Re: Theosophy in USA has a great opportunity

M K Ramadoss

When TS was launched, there were exchange of views between the Adepts and Hume and Sinnett about setting up a separate lodge to cater to Anglo Indians - English and Indian mixed offsprings. It was turned down because theosophy was to reach Alpha and Omega - all sections of Indians with no discrimination.
Couple of decades ago, American Section had a chance to break thru and make the membership diverse when a well known theosophist, Bing Escudero, a past President of Philippines Section emigrated to USA and lectured widely ran for elected office and was defeated as he was not a native son.
What do you see today? A visitor to any theosophical gathering will mistake it for an exclusive group. Lack of interest in making the membership diverse is clearly demonstrated in Cleveland Lodge in Ohio. The city has more than 50% of Afro American origin and has tons of money in the bank.
Last year it sent $50,000 to National Headquarters (you can see this in the tax return in public domain) and spent paltry $13,000 locally. Surely National was happy to receive the large donation. It should have sent the money back and asked the lodge to work hard to increase membership. But was not done.
Anyone who raises these sensitive and yet future survival issues may have to pay a price.
It's time for all theosophists to wake up to the reality and swing into action. Future of theosophy in USA is at stake.
Thankfully we have Internet social forums for us to freely discuss the issue.

Theosophy in USA has a great opportunity

M K Ramadoss

Theosophy in USA has a great opportunity

the USA is reckoning with centuries of racial injustice”

Theosophy movement is the first one in the world with Universal Brotherhood as foundation. It was long before the world recognized the fact – brotherhood is fact of nature. Unfortunately, in the land where the movement was launched – it was not an accident – inspired by the Wise from the East – today we see the pitiful state. Followers do not reflect the diversity of USA. Looks exclusive. No one talks about it

Now is a great opportunity to reach minorities – black and hispanic. Future of Theosophy in USA depends on reaching minorities We should not miss the great opportunity

Are American theosophists ready to grab it?

City has 53% Afro American population and the lodge seems to have no blacks. Lack of blacks in theosophy membership in USA is a serious and sensitive issue today and no leader wants to talk about it.  Sending most of the money to American Section Headquarters and neglecting local needs does not help spread theosophy.

A request was made to the Lodge to provide copies of the documentation submitted for tax exemption. It is in public domain. May be the foundation requires most money be sent to American Section. So far unsuccessful in getting documents. Do they have anything to hide?

American Section should have returned the money to the lodge encouraging its use locally which would increase the membership of the lodge. We don’t know what is going on. Keep tuned

Now You can Donate to Adyar from outside India

To donate money to Adyar from outside India, the Government requires it remitted to a special bank account setup to receive it and sender has to specify end use of the money. This is to make sure that incoming money is tracked and its end use is enforced. The fund details are in public domain. Till recently, the account information was not in any TS publication for reasons unknown. One may be sending donations to Wheaton or Netherlands accounts. These accounts had no transparency. The bank account is now available. Generously donate to help the ongoing renovation. You can be sure it reaches Adyar and will earn a lot of good Karma. Here are the details of the account ---

Thanks for your response.
The problem faced by theosophy in USA is rather unique.
There is constant request for donations even though a Trust gives $1million plus annually. Everyone in the top management are salaried employees.
The membership is not growing and has gone down 50% in last 40 years.
The demography/multi-cultural of USA is unique. Most people outside the country cannot understand the unique cultural makeup unless you have lived for years.
In addition, cancelling membership (of long time members)  is a serious obstacle to growth. This truth cannot be hidden in today's Facebook and Twitter environment when news travels fast - good and bad.
Unless something is drastically done, the following is going to go down and theosophy cannot spread to those who really needs it.
It is hoped the leaders start discussing this serious problem and develop solutions. It is going to take time to solve the negative trend.

American Theosophists missed a great opportunity???

M K Ramadoss

American Theosophists missed a great opportunity???

When theosophy movement was launched in 1875 it tried to spread a simple message – Universal Brotherhood. Only two Eastern Adepts knew its long term potential to help suffering Humanity.

It was launched in United States as it was an evolving multi-cultural society and Universal Brotherhood can create a powerful new society that would set a standard for rest of the world.

What do you see today when you go to any gathering of theosophists in USA? Utter lack of diversity. It is the result of mistaken priorities chosen by well meaning dedicated leaders of past. Unfortunately, it continues today with no sign of open recognition of the problem and immediate plans to address the issue.

Already the theosophists in USA have shrunk 50% in four decades. Today’s Internet environment is speeding up societal changes. BLM is an example.

If status quo continues, present theosophical groups in USA will disappear in short time. Theosophists need to decide if they want to hitch their future to a failing structure.

There are still many dedicated, unselfish committed men and women who see the larger meaning of Brotherhood and how its practical application will solve many social problems we see today. It's time for the ‘soldiers for a forlorn hope’ get into action.

One of the most effective tools in the hands of you and me is the access to Facebook and Twitter. We have to think of creative techniques to help spread Universal Brotherhood. Be prepared for vested interests to attack you because the status quo is threatened.
