Transparency of Financial Information

M K Ramadoss

Bro. Barbara Hebert
President
Theosophical Society in America
Wheaton IL

Dear Bro. Hebert:

I would like to share some thoughts about transparency regarding TSA money matters.

When public money is involved, transparency helps the leaders and organizations. This was demonstrated  by Annie Besant who had first hand experience of the need for meticulous transparency in monetary dealings.

It was this credibility that helped her to attract donors and during her presidency and she expanded Adyar Estate from 11 Acres to 256 Acres.

It was a single donor who funded Leadbeater Chambers. It was a single donor who funded Damodar Gardens. It was a single donor who funded Olcott Gardens where our President’s Residence – Olcott Bungalow stands. All donors knew about the personal financial integrity of Besant.

Organizations are pre-disposed to keep secret the compensation of top officials and significant spending. The founding fathers of United States knew the power of transparency and that is why the Government operates transparently at all levels. That is why we all know the salaries of all Government Officials, President Trump downwards.

Non Profit Tax exempt organizations used to keep their financial matters, especially compensation related secret. Published financial statements do not disclosed key compensation and expense information.

Since taxpayer money funds tax exempt organizations, US Congress wanted public oversight on their financial operations. To bring transparency, organizational documents and annual tax returns were put in the public domain. Pervasiveness of Internet made it easy for the public to access these documents. So key financial data is now transparently accessible by the public.

Today, public can access information such as – Foundation & Trust donations, compensation details of Officers (current and former), major expenses paid to independent contractors etc.

Bringing transparency to financial information of TSA cannot but help future fund raising. It would be a good idea to disclose some of the key info such as –

--- Salaries of Officers and highly paid employees. (Members can see for themselves how these office holders are sacrificing since they may be able to make lot more money outside)

--- Major significant expenses such as accounting fees

--- Major donations such as from Kern Trust and Cleveland Lodge

Other significant incoming money such as the PPP loan.

I am just sharing my thoughts in the hope that it would help TSA. I am sure members would welcome more transparency.

Thank you

Fraternally Yours

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN INDIAN SECTION --- GREAT FUTURE ---
A theosophist should be open minded and objective. So is a journalist who tries to keep their readers informed.
Just took a look at the monthly magazine of Indian Section – The Indian Theosophist which is downloadable as a pdf file for free.
It showed very welcome leadership qualities of Pradeep Gohil who heads the Indian Section which comprises of more than half world-wide membership.
As they say, give the devil its due, I was very impressed about what I saw. Congrats for the great job Gohil is doing. What I like is the transparency. Here are the items that impressed me most ---

Membership of Executive Committee is listed along with their email addresses and cell phone numbers, including that of Gohil.

Membership of Indian Section Council with email addresses and cell phone numbers.

The Annual Report was published with great detail so members can understand what is going on in lodges around the country. It also has detailed membership statistics showing the numbers and changes from prior year.

The Audited Financial Statement was published. It is very detailed and anyone interested can know where the income is coming from and where the money is spent and how much and where the savings are kept. It is unique Indian tradition is that no official gets a monthly salary like in American Section. No member even thinks of taking theosophy money for personal living or enjoyment. In spiritual and public welfare organizations, volunteerism is de facto.

It is a breath of fresh air compared to info you get from Adyar. Try to find out any financial information, you will know what I mean.

Some years ago, when I tried to get American Section tax return which is in public domain, I got a email from the top accountant from Wheaton, informing me that I have to travel to Wheaton and personally pick up the few sheets of paper and the accountant knew how stupid it was and he knew he was breaking the law and I had to tell him that before he mailed me the documents. Guess who was the National President then – Tim Boyd. [The real reason is the tax return has salaries of top officials and key expense details which members are kept in the dark.]

The future of Indian Section under the leadership of Gohil looks very bright. Volunteers would only respond to real leaders who practice what they preach.

Let us all send our kind thoughts to support Gohil for his services to Indian Section.

Peace

2020 Adyar International Convention ---
We have not seen announcement of the 2020 Convention. In the post CV19 environment, there is great uncertainty in India allowing large gatherings and TS will not have any special treatment because of great past services by Annie Besant and others.

The option is very simple. Virtual convention with all participants connecting thru video conference. Everyone can participate from their homes around the world. No body would mind TS paying the lecturers including Boyd for lecturing online. If the payments are made from Adyar it can be kept secret.

On the sad side, all the leaders and their families cannot enjoy a vacation like trip to Adyar funded by theosophy money.

On the joyous side, it may be recalled the Convention was moved from Decmber 26th for the convenience of few leaders from West to enable them to enjoy Christmas in their homes before traveling to Adyar. This change was unilaterally made disregarding the inconvenience to Indian delegates who comprise 98%. For example in 2012 when the writer attended the convention, there were only three delegates from USA – Boyd and two members. The members traveled using their personal funds.

With Covid19, all Western Delegates can stay home and happily celebrate Christmas and New Year enjoying the entire Christmas season. This is Covid’s kinder side!

And above all, think of the saving of theosophy money by the leaders and their families not traveling to Adyar and enjoying vacation like stay.

ELECTION OF INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT ---

ELECTION OF INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT ---
Soon the nomination process will start. No one knows how Covid9 would affect the process. There is a very simple way out.
General Council has the power to change any of the rules. They have done it secretly without any referendum to the (silenced) members.

First was the move of convention from December 26th so that members from the West who grew up in Christian environment can enjoy Christmas celebration in their homes and then travel to Chennai - inconveniencing the majority of delegates who are from India.

Second was to change the description of the objective.

There are two simple changes that can avoid problems due to Covid19. These can be done secretly as usual, with members keeping silent.

First is do away with world-wide voting and General Council select the President. Silent members will continue to be silent and accept it submissively.

Second is to change the rules to make the President life time office like what Olcott was. It would save lot of money in the long run.

What do you think?

THEOSOPHY STUDENTS FORGETTING THE BASIC FOUNDATION

THEOSOPHY STUDENTS FORGETTING THE BASIC FOUNDATION ---
When I visited the Facebook page of a well known member from Wheaton, I was surprised by a posting. It talks about restructuring of meat production in the USA. It is an important issue for a meat eater. But no true student of theosophy can ever think of killing any sentient being.

Has modern theosophy taken off in wrong direction? Talk of unseen world and fuzzy ideas thinking that that is where spirituality is heading. This happening at Wheaton says something loud and clear.
We do not blame anyone.

Like what Mahatmas advised Olcott on his death bed about a troublesome member, this brother too needs our kind thoughts which would hopefully help open up common sense.

Killing animals for food - a view

TIME THEOSOPHISTS WHO ARE ENJOYING THEOSOPHY MONEY SPEAKUP ABOUT KILLING OF ANIMALS FOR FOOD ----
When theosophists talk of ‘one life’ and be silent about the mass killing of animals is going on, shows the stark contrast. In the USA, every day 100,000 cattle and 100,000 pigs are slaughtered. Stop for a minute and imagine you stand in front of 100,000 animals to be slaughtered. The poor animals do not know what is waiting for them.

When did you see any of the elected theosophical leaders speak up of the unnecessary heartless killing going on?

When did you see any of the high paid staff at Wheaton or Adyar speak up?

Being silent is an occult crime.

The world has been locked in by Corona virus. Many believe it is the Karmic balancing for the cruelty of man on his brothers and sisters and sentient animals. West has waged wars destroying countries, killing and maiming millions and resulting in millions of refugees and of course daily mass killing of animals.

Is anyone listening? Hopefully a few kind hearted students of theosophy are and may be they are silently helping.

How can there be peace on earth when man continues his violence on his brothers and sisters and other sentient beings?

Anyone wants to add?

Peace

Corona Virus - Bring trouble to American Section ?

M K Ramadoss

Theosophy News
Published by Theo Sophia · 1 min ·

CORONA VIRUS MAY BRING POTENTIAL LEGAL TROUBLE TO AMERICAN SECTION ---
To help small businesses keep their employees on payroll, United States Government has a loan program called Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

The program provides a loan of 2-1/2 months of payroll, health insurance, retirement and other benefits, rent, utilities, mortgage interest to help them operate the business keeping the employees employed.

The plan allows the loan to be forgiven if at least 75% or more is used for salaries, employee benefits and upto 25% used for rent, utilities etc. It is like a free grant from the government.

In order to get the loan, the business has to certify as follows:

“All borrowers should review carefully the required certification that "[c]urrent economic uncertainty makes this loan request necessary to support the ongoing operations of the Applicant." Borrowers must make this certification in good faith, taking into account their current business activity and their ability to access other sources of liquidity sufficient to support their ongoing operations in a manner that is not significantly detrimental to the business.”

Already many businesses have returned the loan when they realized that they could not satisfy the certification. Since PPP law and bank laws are involved, there is a great potential for businesses getting entangled in criminal prosecution. And government has given a window till May 14th to return the loans.

From Facebook, it was learnt that American Section got the PPP loan. It is estimated to be around $325,000. TSA has been silent about it.

With $17million in the Theosophical Investment Trust, it would be difficult for TSA to justify it does not have access to other liquidity to keep business going.

The Trust is controlled by TSA and Trust has no restrictions for TSA using the money except for a small portion which is restricted.

Let us hope that the professional staff at Wheaton will guide the President to decide whether to keep the money and get it forgiven or return it.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY IN ADYAR ---

ANNUAL MEETING OF THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY IN ADYAR ---
During Olcott’s leadership, the annual General Council Meeting was held at Adyar and was open to all members and the detailed proceedings were printed in The Theosophist. You do not need to take my word for it. Just take a look at early issues.

Today, even though the Societies Registration Act requires annual meeting to be held where all members in good standing participate AND elect all officers, it is ignored under the ruse of impracticality of holding the meeting with members world-wide and that General Council members secret meeting meets the requirement of the law. It continues since no member has challenged it in the courts.

Some historical perspective is needed.

As predicted by Mahatma KH (let’s give some credit to his foresight and wisdom – he warned Besant of unnecessary secrecy in 1900 and the warning was kept secret till 1987), Besant using her leadership and also her position as Outer Head of Esoteric Section (which is claimed to be unrelated to TS) converted the General Council meetings and its proceedings secret. It was convenient as it made it easy to hide from members unpopular decisions. It continues even today.

Today is not 1900. Environment has changed radically. Geographical borders disappeared for communication purposes. Annual meetings can be held thru video conference and Covid19 has proven how business can be conducted thru it. In the USA, even the Supreme Court, which follows most conservative traditions of the past, is hearing cases thru video conference.

So time has come for TS to see the writing on the wall. It needs to conduct the annual meeting in the open with streaming and access to members online. And officers elected at the meeting as provided by law.

It looks like the changes would be forced thru the courts in the decision currently pending before it where past election and the sprinting take over of the office of President are at issue.

Peace

ROLE OF MEMBERS IN TS & FUTURE ---

ROLE OF MEMBERS IN TS & FUTURE ---

Theosophical Society was started as a channel for spreading theosophy to the world. Covid19 has shown that video broadcast can accomplish that at very little cost. So the role of members is reduced to that of donors so that well paid professionals can run it like multinational corporations. Once there is a huge fund is created, there is no need for members. The current international trend points in this direction.

The General Council has been making changes arbitrarily with no participation by world-wide membership. It seems to have more wisdom even than the inner founders. It changed the objective and you can read it visiting any official website. Start of convention was moved to accommodate a handful from the West to enjoy Christmas. The term of office of President was secretly changed to two times with no referendum. What other secret changes are in the works, we do not know.

Some years ago, there was a secret proposal to disenfranchise all members so that President is "elected" by the General Council. Unfortunately the timing was too early. When term of office was secretly tinkered by the General Council, it can change it to life time so that all the expense of election can be saved. It may be coming in the future.

The future money problem for the TS can be easily solved. There is very valuable property owned by it. Sell some of it and create a fund like Kern Foundation which can generate income in perpetuity. Then get rid of members. It is so simple!.

What do you think?

OLCOTT MEETING AN ADEPT AT PONDICHERRY

OLCOTT MEETING AN ADEPT AT PONDICHERRY ---

In a recent address at Pondicherry (Puducherry), the current head of Shankara Mutt in Congeevaram refered to it as land of Siddhas. Siddha is name used in India for Adepts. The head of the Mutt are initiates and Geoffrey Hodson visited it and met with then Head of the Mutt. The following incident should be of interest to theosophists. Olcott describes his visit to Pondicherry.

I knew quite enough French to speak without interpretation, whereupon I was called upon from all parts of the room to go ahead, and that I had finally to do despite my excuses and protestations. In a fashion that I dare not look back upon, I went on, and on, for more than an hour, expounding our ideas and Eastern philosophy as best I could; and the audience were kind enough to signify by loud applause that in coming out to India they had brought with them that lovely national trait of courtesy and forbearance for strangers who try to speak their tongue. You should, however, have seen the face and gestures of H. P. B. when I returned home and told her what I had done. She held up both hands in amazement, and made comments strongly suggestive of her horror at the possible and probable mistakes I had made in the use of genders and verbs! However, I did get through after a fashion, and we did form a T. S. Branch in the town, which was the chief thing after all.

I was so busy telling her the above and hearing her comments, that beyond a sweeping bow to the dozen or so of visitors sitting on the floor about her, whom she had been entertaining during my absence, I took no [18] notice of them. She, however, presently gave me a certain look, and by slightly inclining her head, made me look towards her right at one man who sat behind the others, and who met my startled gaze with a kindly smile. It was none other than one of the Masters known to me at New York during the writing of Isis Unveiled: one who disliked English so much that he always spoke and wrote French in his communications with me: the very one who gave me that cutting rebuke by duplicating several times the lead-pencil I hesitated to lend “H. P. B.”—his temporary shell. I can’t say if the others saw him, but certainly they could not have left him so unnoticed if they had, for he was to them, in majesty, as a lion to a whippet. I longed to approach and address him, but his eyes expressed the command that I should not, so I took my seat on the floor to H. P. B.’s left, where I had him in full view. The company did not stay long after my arrival, and he, after saluting H. P. B., like the rest, with folded palms, in the Indian fashion, spoke a word or two to her apart and followed them out.

VOLUNTEERING FOR THEOSOPHY IS NOT EASY – MUST BE BRAVE TO FACE ATTACKS – What olcott wrote to brown is true even today – all volunteers should be ready to face attacks from those who mistakenly think they are helping theosophy by attacking volunteers – Reader should ready to recognize the attacks as to what they are – Many times unsuspecting men and women are misused as cat's paw by others who hide behind the attack –

W T Brown is one of the few who was visited by Mahatma KH in flesh ---

At this station a new recruit—Mr. W. T. Brown, of Glasgow, “Poor Brown”—joined me for the tour. He, and a Mrs. Sarah Parker, of Dublin, had just arrived at Madras under the impulse of service, and Brown had volunteered to help me. I wrote him from Hyderabad a kind but most explicit letter, warning him of the self-sacrifice he must expect to make; the public ingratitude, individual treacheries, libellous atacks on character, unjust suspicion of motives, bad fare and fatiguing journeys by nights and days in all sorts of conveyances: warning him to return to Europe if he had expected anything else, and leave H. P. B. and myself to continue the work we had begun with our eyes open. His reply was a telegraphic notice of his coming to me, and he overtook me at Sholapore.
