Paul,

Thanks for confirming this and for sharing the work you have done on the 122 GHz project.

And thanks to Don and Herbert for providing links for suitable connectors; I'm all set now.

Yes, I have done the same to generate the assembly language code for the PIC. I have done a lot of assembly language programming for PIC's over the years. It was pretty easy for me to do any modifications.

Re: VCO TP Frequency OK and CW tone OK - RESOLVED

Finally - I got the CW sounding like it should - I modified some filter settings on filter 3 on my IC-705 IF radio and it sounds good to me.

See new video at top of my blog at https://kd4app.blogspot.com

Thanks again to all here who replied to my posts on this - there's so much RF talent here!

Now to get this second unit in a case.

Seems like you're off frequency. You should have a strong, clear CW note. But yes, it's definitely working--glad to see you've cleared that hurdle!

When you switch the unit on with the IF rig attached, what kind of increase in noise do you hear?  Mine increases by probably a few dB. Do you hear anything in the pass band on the receiver when the other unit is transmitting in beacon mode? Even when I'm not tuned right on it, I hear a noticeable hiss increase in the receiver with the CW.

I used the C-4P 4-pin jack that matches the plug on the mic and rewired the inside of the mic to use three of the pins.  I wired it to use the mike switch as the PTT but also wired a separate PTT switch.

In reality I could use a stereo jack instead.

Don,
Try using a spectrum analyzer on the RX IF to look wide band while transmitting with the second unit. Don’t be afraid to look extremely wide.

The reference oscillators may be off, or some other frequency issues.

Don -

I wouldn't jump to reflashing so quickly...

Does your LED change color from tx to rx?
Do you hear any noise on the IF out?

Check out these two previous posts:  #1012 and #1516   for some simple tests

Check your control wiring, see:

Re: VCO TP Frequency OK now but no IF output still

Don Woodward

My systems are both working at the correct frequencies at the VCO test points - my SA was off frequency from the display - it's an older HP SA and I need to go through the calibration tasks to get it to show the correct frequencies.  I was able to use another frequency source which is locked to my GPSDO and generate the frequencies that were to be expected and then switch to the VCO TP output and they matched.  My new SA only goes to 1.5GHz 🙁 - I bought it not considering the need for these VCO tests.

I'm still not receiving anything on the IF ports on either 122Ghz unit.  I see the led flashing red in sync with the beacon and solid red on the key position on both.

Today I connected to the MCLR line (both units) and grounded it several times causing the program to restart as several suggested - still not hearing/seeing anything through the IF port on either with the other unit TXing a beacon.

I tested my IC-705 IF radio and it's able to receive a very weak signal at 144.3985 so it's good.

I guess the next step is to reload the program on the PIC as several have suggested.

I ordered a PICKIT3 so I'm on hold until I receive that.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Yes, it is Pin 1 (the one with the square pattern) on the ICSP interface.

Is that MCLR on the ICSP interface?

Try forcing a reload of the program by shorting MC low on the interface a couple times.

Hi Don,

It appears this is the one I have. It was a lot less than a PICKIT3 made by Microchip. But it performs just fine. I think it is an identical clone.

Yes, I ran some leads from the J1 ICSP connector. to a 5-pin connector that can be connected to the PICKIT3 through a jumper cable (supplied with the PICKIT3). It connects to a USB port. It even detects what the PIC is that is connected to it. I think I found software on line for it - it uses the software supplied by Microchip.

I've used it for a lot of other things, too. I wrote a program for a PIC 16F688 that detects the digital band encoding for the FT897D and switches antennas between 144 and 432 MHz.

I do not currently have access to do that, but I can order a programmer and check that out.  Would that be done through the J1 ICSP connector?

I see Tim has suggested a reload so your suggestion is a great one.

Do you have any recommendations on a PICKET3?  I see an original one on Amazon for $110 and clones for less like this one for $23.

Don, do you have a way to download the PIC programming with a PICKIT3 and compare it to what the programming is supposed to be? I have checked, found errors in, and reprogrammed a couple others' units because the EEPROM data got corrupted somehow.

Note, if you do this, do it with the unit powered up first! This puts 3.3 volts on the PIC and RF chips and the PICKIT3 senses the voltage and uses the 3.3 volts. If you do it with the unit unpowered, the PICKIT3 will put 5 volts on the line. This is what happened when I burned out my original unit.

Mine does. It starts out red and changes to green. It changes to red on CW transmit. It flashes red with the CW in the beacon mode.

Sort of a combination. I removed R200 and L4. I put a jumper across the pads that are for R47 and C47 instead of the blue wire VA3TO showed. I also put a 68 ohm resistor across the OCXO input connector.

Did you do the VA3TO 10MHz mod or the mod in the operation and construction document?

Hmm ... that's interesting.

I ordered two boards, which I received last week. I did the OCXO mod on one board and swapped the bad one in my box for the new one with the OCXO mod. I put the 20 dB horn on it.  I use an Isotemp 10 MHz OCXO.

I set the other one up as a signal source - I did not do any mods on it and I set it up in beacon mode without an antenna. I pointed it in the direction of the other unit  about 3 feet away. I had the digital encoder on both units set to 0, mode A. I found the signal from the transmitter drifting between 144.397 and 144.404. It was pinning the s-meter of my receiver.

1.916GHz on TX

I can't seem to find the TX signal for either unit on my IF receiver anywhere in the 144.xxx range.

Were there changes in the frequencies made in this second batch?

Yes, I have done the same to generate the assembly language code for the PIC. I have done a lot of assembly language programming for PIC's over the years. It was pretty easy for me to do any modifications.

Re: VK3CV v VK5KK

Mike Lavelle K6ML

I've run tests with linear vs switcher on the VK3CV, but not over as many channels as Iain. The switcher 'spurs' appear at +/- 480 kHz (the switcher freq) and are quite weak compared to the spurs that Iain has highlighted (I've seen those, too). The switcher 'spurs' aren't really spurs, they are weak unwanted modulation. For most folks, it's not worth replacing the switcher with a linear regulator.

I'm pretty sure the difference in spurs is related to the choice of PLL chip (ADF4153 in 'CV, ADF4159 in VK5KK and K6ML designs). The 4153 has a smaller modulus (variable to a max of 2*12 minus 1) vs the 4159n (fixed 2*25 minus 1) and a different delta-sigma modulator design, making it harder to avoid frac-N spurs at all frequencies. The 4153 does permit varying the modulus, so it may somtimes be possible to improve the choice of modulus when programming the chip.

Other sources of spurs could be related to power supply noise.

Hi Iain,

Very interesting, thanks for the tests.

There is certainly room for improvement, it would be interesting to run
the tests again but with a linear regulator in place of the switcher.
