A couple of the guys have asked about sending another painting order off to Philgreg.

If enough of you are interested to make it worthwhile, I’ll put together another order.

If we do send an order, I’d like to do it before Christmas. So chime in if you’re interested.

You North Phoenix guys are welcome to join in too.

Fw: Announcing the Shut Down of Yahoo Groups

JC

looks like it is fini for Yahoo Groups.

I must admit I am puzzled.  They got rid of most of the storage costs.
Therefore fairly low level costs of running the site.
You have a captive audience in the Groups still functioning.   So lots of folks to target advertising to.

Why close it down?

JC

Subject: Announcing the Shut Down of Yahoo Groups

Yahoo!

Dear Yahoo Group Moderators and Members,

We launched Yahoo Groups 20 years ago to connect people around their shared interests. We helped our users navigate new towns, keep in touch with college friends, learn new skills, and most importantly, build connections they may have lost or never had in the first place. While we could not have been more proud of what we accomplished together, we are reaching out today with heavy hearts to let you know that we have decided to shut down Yahoo Groups on December 15, 2020.

Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years. Over that same period we’ve witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content. To that end, we must sometimes make difficult decisions regarding products that no longer fit our long-term strategy as we hone our focus on other areas of the business.

Beginning December 15, 2020 the Yahoo Groups website will shut down and members will no longer be able to send or receive emails from Yahoo Groups. We’ve compiled a comprehensive FAQ here that includes alternative providers and information on how this will impact your group content.

Thank you for helping us build one of the earliest digital communities — we’re proud and honored to have forged countless connections over the last 20 years and played a small part in helping build your communities.

Sincerely,
The Yahoo Groups team

Re: Quiz for Bob and All

Yup.  All characters played by the late, great Telly Savalas.

1. Beau Geste (1966) - great movie if you haven't seen it.
2. Battle of the Bulge (1965)
3. The Dirty Dozen (1967) - how can you not love a movie with Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown and Telly Savalas?
4. Two Dirty Dozen sequels in 1987 and 1988, The Deadly Mission and The Fatal Mission.  I may have seen one a number of years ago.
5. MacKenna's Gold (1969)
6. Kelly's Heroes (1970) - I recall my mom and dad taking us to the drive-in to see this movie.  Still one of my favorite war movies of all time.  Love the characters.  Cross between a war, bank heist and western (see the ending) film. Just brilliant!

"Who loves ya, baby?" Savalas tagline as Kojak.

My last quiz

Bob

I realize that too much thinking will injure some of you so this will be the last quiz I put up. I think it’ll be pretty easy for you and will make you feel somewhat superior to the unwashed masses.

Presidential movie quiz

This one should be easy.

I’ll note the name of the movie and you’ll say which American President we should associate with it.

He might be a character in the movie, or maybe he’ll be one of the actors.

  1. The Enforcer of Federalism: ________ ________.
  2. They died with their boots on.
  3. All the President’s Men.
  4. Rough Riders.
  5. The Missiles of October.
  6. ________  ________; Vampire Hunter.
  7. The Crossing.
  8. ________  _______: Good, Evil and the Presidency
  9. ________: American Badass.
  10. Iran: Days of Crisis.

Special bonuses:

  1. Mars Attacks
  2. Air Force One
  3. Iron Sky

Okay, I cheated.  I tried, but I had to look most of these up.  I was able to answer 1, 2 and 9 on my own, but the others were difficult.

1. Captain Jack Aubrey - Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003).  Russell Crowe did a great job as Aubrey.
2. :t (JG) John Kennedy - PT109 (1963) - Cliff Robertson did a wonderful job as JFK.  He may have won the Academy Award for it.
3. Lt (JG) Kenneth M. Braden - Up Periscope (1959) - have not seen it.
4. Captain Roc Brasiliano - Against All Flags (1952) - I haven't seen it, but may check it out because I like Anthony Quinn, who is in the title role.
5. Captain Charlie Allnut - The African Queen (1951) - Another awesome Bogart movie, but would never have come up with this one on my own.
6. Captain Collins - The Sand Pebbles (1966) - I saw this one a long time ago.  Steve McQueen was a sailor in it if I recall (he was not Captain Collins).  I believe Paul Newman turned down that role.
7. Admiral P.P. Spewter - The Incredible Mr. Limpet (1964) - I remember watching this as a kid.  Clever name for a German Naval Officer.  Don Knotts was the star.  I recall he was animated as a fish in part of the movie.
8. Captain Salazar - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) - I should have gotten this one, but I was too mesmerized by another character in the movie...no, NOT Captain Jack Sparrow.  Whichever character Keira Knightly played.
9. Captain Marco Ramius - The Hunt for Red October (1990) - Played by Sean Connery.  I think a young Alec Baldwin played Jack Ryan in that one.  One of my favorite character actors, Sam Neill, played Ramius' Executive Officer.
10. Don Jose Alvarez de Cordoba - The Sea Hawk (1940) - Errol Flynn playing a Sir Francis Drake wannabe.

As for the movie without the battle at sea, I'd have to guess as I do not have enough time to watch all of these.  I wanted to say The African Queen, but I think there was a naval battle of sorts.  Mr. Limpet would have been a possibility, but any film with a Nazi commander in it is going to have a battle.  I'm going to guess The Hunt for Red October because they were trying to avoid a battle.
